130 Years Ago -1893
The band boys of Marcus gave a masquerade ball which was a grand success. They sold 114 tickets at $1.00 each. They netted about $70.00.
There is probably not another town the size of Marcus in this state that has as many retired farmers and they are all first class citizens.
125 Years Ago -1898
Rev. Geige will give a lecture in the Opera House on February 16th. Mrs. Long will give a musical in the Miss Silva Hartley home and Mrs. Naffziger will give a musicale in the Opera House on February 18.
Henry Liggett and C.D. Luther instigated donations for the John Dunn family. His wife passed away leaving him with eleven children living. They collected nearly $75.00 for which Mr. Dunn was truly grateful.
110 Years Ago -1903
M. A. Garvin and family have moved into the rooms over the butcher shop on the west side of Main Street.
E. Turner has moved a good share of his merchandise stock to his new location on the corner.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday were ideal winter days.
There are now 668 inmates in the Cherokee County insane hospital enough to populate a good sized town. Inebriates are coming in at the rate of one a day since that department was opened.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Keys and Florine closed a deal where they purchased the real estate in Fielding, the store, the dwelling, blacksmith, and stock of general merchandise from P.H. Herrington. Mr. Florine and family will take charge of it on Monday.
Fire broke out in the office of, the Fierney & Ahmann elevator in Remsen on February 1 in the morning. It started from an overheated stove. The Remsen fire company had it out in a half-hour.
Mrs. Carl Kolb and baby of Amherst Township are spending a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pixler of Cherokee.
Stanley Cave and his sister, Gladys, hosted a Valentine party in their home. Some 40 people attended. They served a three course luncheon at 11 pm; -games, music and socializing made a very pleasant evening.
105 Years Ago -1918
Jethro Stowater has rented the Charles Woodall farm and will move there. The A. Sjostrom family will move to Elkton, S.D. and Henry Quirin has rented his residence. The Carl Pedersen family will move to the farm vacated by the Quirins.
W. Lickiss of Arlington has accepted a position as linotypist in the News Office and replaces Evan Quirin, who has been assisting since the war.
95 Years Ago -1928
In spite of a snow storm Monday evening, the Legion Post and Auxiliary enjoyed a party with Mrs. W.J. Satterlee, Mrs. Floyd Nagle and Mrs. Max Radcliffe in charge.
Mrs. Robert Porter and Adelbert McGee were honored at a three course birthday dinner Saturday evening in the Porter home.
Marcus defeated the Aurelia High School basketball team 13-10. Marcus first team was Krekow-center, Capt. Drefke and S. Drefke as guards, E. Anderson and H. Booth, forwards.
85 Years Ago -1938
About 120 people attended the mother daughter banquet in the Methodist Church. Mrs. John Pease acted as toastmistress.
Otto Wittkopp will enter the preliminary declamatory contest in the oratorical division, Wilbur Miller in dramatic and Don Loomis in humorous. It will be held February 22.
Members of the Better Marcus Club entertained the ladies at dinner in the Legion Hall on St. Valentine’s Day.
Evelyn Culler and William Pease were married February 10 at Moville.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Hillis Carris, Robert Stowater, Keith Tentinger and Lyle Weicht were inducted into the U.S. Army on February 9.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf are the parents of a 7 lb. daughter, Constance Marie, born on February 14.
Robert Pitts who is employed in defense work at Omaha, NE, spent a week’s vacation with his mother, Blanche Pitts, and other relatives.
Miss Georgia Wilkie, of Cherokee, and Paul Flanagan, of Marcus, were married in Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City recently. They will make their home at Marcus.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Marinello are the parents of a 6 1/2 lb. daughter, Marcia Ann, born at Great Lakes, Ill. “Tony” is a Chief Gunner’s mate in the U.S. Navy and his wife is Mary Jean Knox of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Johnson are the parents of a 9 lb. son, born Friday, January 30. He has a brother, Charles.
The Jay Legvold family of Fort Dodge moved into part of the Cecil Dorr house east of the public school. Jay is employed by the Dorr Hatchery. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bjornstad and Timmy occupy part of the house.
70 Years Ago -1953
Dorothy French and Virgil Kirchoff were crowned Queen and King of Cleghorn’s Homecoming Friday evening after both Cleghorn teams, boys and girls, defeated the Marcus teams.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cantine and family departed Friday, February 6, for Long Beach, Calif., where they will make their new home. Enroute, they visited with Mrs. Cantine’s brother, Pvt. John Jenkins, at Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reed departed on a month’s trip to the west coast where they will visit their son, Bob, at San Diego. They will continue on to Seattle, Wash., to visit their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Brownfield.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben Snyder of Sheldon celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the Sheldon Community Building on Sunday, February 16.
Kaye Lynn Corrington, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Loren Corrington, was baptized in Marcus Nazareth Lutheran. Church with Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pallesen as sponsors.
Marvin Simons, a recent inductee into the U.S. Army, is stationed at Camp Carson, Cob. He’s not sure it’s permanent.
Stanley Meylor, a Holy Name graduate, received his B.S. from the University of St. Louis on Sunday, February 2. His college was interrupted by two years in the armed services.

Ernie Meins, new manager of Ewald’s Place at Marcus is making plans for an Open House in March. Mr. and Mrs. Meins have moved from Sioux Falls into the apartment over the tavern.
Jerry Lewis in ‘The Sad Sack” and Spencer Tracy and Marlene Dietrich in “Judgment at Nuremberg” are showing at the Marland Theatre.
Randy Tentinger tossed in 18 points as Holy Name Wildcats defeated Early 63 to 39.
55 Years Ago -1968
David Delperdang has recovered consciousness four weeks after being injured in an auto accident.
Vernon Letsche, a 1967 graduate of Marcus Community High, has maintained a grade average of 3.25 for the first semester at Estherville Junior College and is on the honor roll.
Bob Ruden is the new Watkins products man for Marcus, Amherst, Sheridan, Liberty and Rock Townships.
50 Years Ago -1973
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Letsche announce the arrival of an 8 lb. 3 oz. son, Brian John, born Tuesday, February 6. He has two brothers and a sister.
Gilbert “Gib” Schreier will hold a Public Auction of farm equipment, livestock, and miscellaneous on Thursday, February 22, at the farm on the southeast edge of Marcus.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Andrew Medick, 81, of Cleghorn died Saturday, February 11, after a brief illness. Survivors include his wife, three sons here, and two brothers and two sisters in Germany.
Marcus All School play “The Mousetrap” will be held Friday, April 14. Director is Brian Madland.
JoLynn Cams of Cleghorn and Timothy Sitzmann of LeMars are planning a May 6 wedding.
40 Years Ago –1983
Sheila Letsche scored 24 points as the Eaglettes defeated Akron-Westfield. Donna Dreckman tossed in 22 points.
Citations for Outstanding Musicianship were awarded to Marcus Jazz Band members Dave Whited, Bob Wendt, Dominic Wibe, Brett Meister and Karen Nelson.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Ed Sand of Marcus is a local winner in the 1987 Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest. He recorded a 201.49 bushel per acre yield with Garst Hybrid 8519.
The Lady Eagles nipped the Floyd Valley T-Birds 48-44 in the conference game. The Eagles have a 6-4 conference record with a 9-8 overall record.
30 Years Ago – 1993
MMC Jazz Band placed second at the Tri-State Jazz Festival at Morningside and has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championship on Thursday, April 8.
