130 Years Ago -1893
Mr. M.R. Nagle and Miss Etta Connolly were married in the Catholic Church here by Rev. Father O’Reilly on Wednesday, January 25.
A Marcus citizen lost two fine shoats recently. He has almost positive evidence that they are now in the barrel of a neighbor being cured for summer eating.
The thermometer continues 20 degrees to 30 degrees below zero with very little snow – not enough for sleighing.
125 Years Ago -1898
M.E. Hinkley has started the publication of a horticultural and fruit journal called “The Fruitman.” It will be issued from the News office monthly and costs 25¢ a year.
The petition to get 65 percent of the voters in favor of saloons failed, both in Marcus and in Cherokee.
110 Years Ago -1903
Butter is 20c per pound arid eggs are 25c per dozen at Marcus.
Farmers who failed to get their corn all husked last fall are now getting their best licks in.
With the coal shortage over, the Marcus Mills have been running all night long to catch up.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Miss Kate Logan, Cherokee County Superintendent of Schools, conceived the idea of establishing a township special high school. Marcus, Silver and Grand Meadow townships all voted in favor of so doing. Marcus is three miles north of the city and Professor McDonald, a law graduate, is in charge of it. Commercial law, agriculture, public speaking, manual training and regular high school studies are taught. This enables the farm boys to further their education and still help out with the farm work.
When Lewis Grauer and Mabel Nield were married on January 29, they wished to miss the usual send-off at the local depot. They had Harry Grauer and Irma Board drive them by auto to LeMars to board the train. They were quite surprised when Mr. and Mrs. Chelsea Metcalf, Grace Nield, Marie Fry, Martha Grauer, Peter Grauer and Fred Knox met them at LeMars and administered the usual shower of rice, etc. They had taken the 3:10 train to LeMars and arrived ahead of the newlyweds.
A pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Wirt Wednesday, January 29 when Rozena May was married to Peter. L. Miller.
105 Years Ago -1918
Rev. Gilbert is expected to deliver the address at Simpson Bethel Church next Sunday.
O.E. Ferguson will hold a public sale February 5.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wiederholdt are parents of an eight pound daughter born last Sunday.
Arthur Johnson of Marcus township has moved on his farm in Amherst township, purchased from Perry Derthick.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Loren Londergan last Friday.
Margaret Armstrong, one of the Public school teachers, is recovering from an illness.
95 Years Ago -1928
J.E. McGee was surprised Tuesday when his children honored him on his birthday anniversary.
Will, Josephine, Beatrice, Thomas and Richard Nagle of Grand Ridge, IL, came to Marcus to make their home following the death of their mother.
Marcus boys and girls defeated the Meriden boys and girls basketball teams in the old Opera House. Hawthorne, Rosburg and Armbruster played well for the Marcus boys. Porter, Dorr and Derthick did well for the girls.
85 Years Ago -1938
Fire broke out on the Cherokee State Hospital grounds that resulted in a loss to the state of $9,000.
Mrs. Fred G. Mossman returned home from a vacation trip to California where she visited relatives and friends.
Sister Mary Dominica Burke, superior of Marcus Holy Name, passed away of pneumonia in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Sioux City.
Mr. and Mrs. Chels Metcalf announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Kathryn, to Erwin Brockman of Paullina.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. and Mrs. John Berendes of Marcus will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, February 7. It will be hosted by their family.
Jean Kelly of Marcus, who has enlisted in the Army Nursing Corp will report to Fort Des Moines Tuesday, February 16, for active duty.
Marcus City Council decided to build and maintain an Honor Roll Board of Marcus and vicinity servicemen.
75 Years Ago -1948
The town of Marcus received a check for $799 as its five percent share of gross liquor sales here from July 1 to January 1. It goes into the town’s general funds.
The annual sale of furs confiscated by conservation officers from illegal trapping will be held February 3 at Des Moines. Seven hundred muskrats, one hundred twenty-five beaver and smaller amounts of mink, raccoon, etc. will be sold.
Joe Green will hold a closing out farm sale next Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. James Healy will observe their 55th wedding anniversary quietly in their home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Hagey are parents of twin sons born Friday morning at Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars. The twin boys, Larry Chris and Barry Carl weighed in at 6 lbs. 11 ozs. and 11 lbs. 14 ozs.
70 Years Ago -1953
The little town of Larrabee’s basketball team won the Cherokee County championship by defeating favored Grand Meadow 44 to 40.
Thomas H. King spent a five-day leave with his family here, enroute to Camp Kilmer, N.J. He has over four years service In the Far East and will now be sent to Europe.
The Marcus News, the Cherokee Times, and the Cherokee Courier were appointed official papers for Cherokee County by the Board of Supervisors.
Rev. George Pimlott is a patient in the hospital after an allergic reaction to penicillin.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Smith are parents of a son born January 23.
Nelson Furniture store is announcing a big February clearance sale.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Alesch were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary last Sunday.
Dr. and Mrs. G. R. Hobson announce the marriage of their daughter, Betty, to Paul Healy, son of Wallace Healy.

Don Anderson, formerly of Dayton, IA, took over his duties as manager of the Farmer’s Coop Elevator here on February 1. He replaced Joe Comp.
Daniel Allen Gates, 6 lbs. 15 oz., arrived on Sunday, February 2, to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gates, on his dad’s birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Burch of Meriden announce the engagement of their daughter, Mardell, to Robert Skaggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Skaggs of Cleghorn.
Announcement is made of the engagement of Nancy Thorborg and Paul Rassel.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Brady are the parents of a 7 lb. 8 oz. son, born Sunday, January 27. He has three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Wm. (Alvina) Schmillen, 85, of Marcus passed away January 23. She is survived by one son and one daughter. Funeral services were January 25 at Peace Lutheran Church with burial in Marcus Amherst cemetery.
Mrs. Francis Delperdang and Clifford Schlenger are in Sacred Heart hospital recuperating from injuries received when their cars collided Saturday morning south of Marcus.
55 Years Ago -1968
Vince McClintock, 69, died January 29 after a long illness. He was a life-long Marcus resident and is survived by three sisters and one brother.
John Heline, farmer from south of Marcus, described his recent trip to Europe to the Marcus Rotary Club. John was a member of a commission to assess the potential market for the U.S. Agricultural products.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Treinen of Remsen are parents of a son, David William born Sunday, Jan. 28, 1968.
The city fathers have made arrangements to spray the residence sections of Marcus for Dutch Elm disease in the near future.
50 Years Ago -1973
Verdine Ehrp underwent five and one half hour open heart surgery in the University of Iowa Hospital at Iowa City.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fischer attended a Maytag meeting in the Biltmore at Sioux City. Herman received recognition for having more than doubled his appliance sales in 1972.
Marvin Simons of Marcus was a guest at the regular Cleghorn Lions Club meeting. Marvin showed his slides of Japan.
Mr. and Mrs. Terry Horsley are the parents of a 7 lb. baby girl, born Wednesday, January 31, named Robin Renee. She has a sister, Wendy.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Cheerleaders for MeridenCleghorn basketball teams are Jane Stevenson, Dawn Polson, Marlene Wooley, Janice Henke, Mary Dunn and Linda Henke.
The Marcus Rescue Unit gave demonstrations of how to handle emergencies. It was held in the Marcus Library and was sponsored by them.
Marcus Inn will have an “All You Can Eat” fish fry, $2.25 for adults and $1.25 for children under twelve on Friday, February 3rd.
40 Years Ago –1983
Due to interest expressed from the local Carolfest choirs, plans are being made for an Easter Cantata, “For This He Came” to be presented on Palm Sunday.
Carol Offerdale of Beresford, SD and Charles Garvin of Marcus are planning a summer wedding.
Sgt. Bluff-Luton girls clipped the Marcus Eaglettes 75-72 while the Eagles trounced the SB-L boys 68-38.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Kristi Lynn Rasmussen of Humboldt and Dominic John Wibe of Mankato (Marcus) are planning an April 9, 1988 wedding in St. Peter and Paul’s Church, West Bend, Iowa.
Karen Jorgensen of Marcus is a member of the 65 voices Wayne State College of Nebraska Concert Choir. They will have an eleven concert tour through Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota February 10-14.
Dee Cave of Marcus will celebrate her 90th birthday at an Open House on Sunday, February 7, in the Methodist Church.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Jerry and Linda Moser are happy to announce the arrival of a 9 lb. 15 oz. son, Brock Raymond, born Thursday, February 4.
Paul and Georgina Flanagan of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday, February 14 at Holy Name Hall.
