130 Years Ago -1893
Andy Garvin will run a dray wagon on the streets of Marcus and we now have four full-fledged drays.
Mrs. Bert Olney nearly destroyed their residence. Mrs. Olney scratched a match on the window casing and a lace curtain caught on fire. Bert arrived and managed to put out the fire.
Mr. Louie Seeger went to Pilot Mound, IA and married Miss Emily Cline. They will return to Marcus to make their home.
125 Years Ago -1898
James Bird, former clerk in Delaney’s Store here, has been chosen deputy sheriff of Cherokee County.
Walter G. Weart and Blanche Perry were united in marriage on Thursday p.m., Dec. 30, in the home of Dr. Loomis. Walter is manager of the Weart and Lysart lumber and coal business here.
M.E. Davis arrived here from Texas with a lot of razor back hogs. They have a sharp back and a snoot that indicates they are probably good rooters.
110 Years Ago -1903
F.E. Loomis, M.D., physician and surgeon, has an office over Gund’s Bank in Marcus and lives on the corner northeast of the school ground calls attended day or night.
Mrs. P. Mortenson has manufactured 3,331 pairs of husking mittens this year just since corn husking began.
Eade Bros. have rented the room north of Collier’s barber shop and have moved their meat market there. We now have three meat markets here.
105 Years Ago -1918
E.T. Fitzgerald, physician and surgeon, is upstairs south of the jewelry store phone 252.
T.R. Fenton and L.H. Radcliffe purchased the 60 acres of land southeast of town last week. We’ve been told they paid $150 per acre and are sub-dividing and selling it in tracts for residential purposes. It will soon be platted with new streets laid out.
Maud Ellen Bjork Billings and infant son, George Alfred, born Dec. 14, 1907, passed away -Maud on Dec. 20 and the babe on Christmas Eve. They were buried December 26 with the babe in its mother’s arms.
John O. Bird and sons have sold their implement business to Wm. H. Carpenter. John has been in business here for nearly 22 years.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Charles Addy purchased the Mrs. Amanda Jenks residence property for $4,000.
Mrs. Caroline Goldsmith Fry and Dr. Robert H. Woodruff, both of Marcus, were married Nov. 29, 1912 at Pocahontas, IA.
Mrs. Harding, wife of Lt. Gov. Elect W.L. Harding of Sioux City, was a guest in the S.M. Wixcel home Monday evening and on Tuesday went to visit her parental home at Meriden.
95 Years Ago -1928
The newly organized local basketball team called the Marcus Whippets are managed by E.C. Walrod and Henry Treinen.
Mrs. James Williams passed away, leaving her husband and five children. Services were held Dec. 27 in the Methodist Church.
James Collins is acting as radio announcer for Gurney Seed and Nursery Co. over WNAX, Yankton, SD.
85 Years Ago -1938
Loren and Lois Alesch, celebrated their 14th birthday anniversaries – they are twins.
Roy Turner has rented a room in the Nield block and will soon open a refreshment parlor.
John Pease will act as toastmaster at the Father-Son banquet to be held in the Methodist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rassel are the parents of a 9 lb. daughter, Mary Lucille, born Dec. 30th.
Mrs. Luella Byers is spending the holiday with her son at Houston, TX.
80 Years Ago – 1943
The infant son born last week to Mr. and Mrs. William Gettner has been named Curtis Rodney.
Howard McConnell and Duane Faul resumed their studies at Morningside College, Sioux City, after spending the holiday with their parents.
The local high school was dismissed on Wednesday noon for services held in honor of Cpl. Henry Ohlendorf.
A family reunion was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dixson Sunday honoring their son Jake, AMM 2/c who is on a short leave from NAS, Norfolk, VA.
A large crowd attended the Christmas party at Tilden #9, taught by Miss Pauline Jenkins.
75 Years Ago -1948
Arlene Blietz returned to Sidney, where she is employed in a beauty shop, after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Blietz.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Keitges of Park Rapids, MN, were guests over Sunday in the Mr. and Mrs. William Dickson home.
T/S James Muehl called his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Muehl, from Camp Stoneman, CA. Jim just returned from Korea and hopes to be discharged soon.
Barbara Fassler of Cleghorn and Robert Irwin of Washta were married Dec. 20th at Cherokee. They will move to a farm in the Grand Meadow area March 1st.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Reinhardt Olson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, Dec. 27. Reinhardt celebrated his 81st birthday on Dec. 18.
Gordon and Donald Garvin will hold a closing-out farm sale on Thursday, Jan. 8, on their farm five miles north and six miles west of Marcus.
Harry Weicht had the pins removed from his shoulder that he injured during the 1951 football season.
James Hoxsie departed for his home at Fort Lauderdale, FL after spending the holidays here with the Elroy Baumann family and other friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Hans Rasmussen of Marcus will observe their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Jan. 5, with an Open House at their home.
Glenn Miller departed Thursday, Dec. 26, on a trip to California. He will attend the Rose Bowl game, visit friends, and return home on Jan. 10.
Sherree Dee Benston of Sioux City and Gerald Ogren of Marcus are planning a Saturday, Feb. 15th, wedding at the First Lutheran Church, Sioux City.
Mrs. M.J. Kelly was honored on her birthday with a surprise party planned by her daughter, Mary Ellen Kelly.
The Class of 1924 of Cleghorn enjoyed a reunion in the Hillis Carris home following the homecoming activities.
60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Galen Ducommum of Cleghorn were blessed with a 7 lb. 11 oz. baby girl born Dec. 19. They named her Linda Kay.
Mary Ohlendorf and Gerald Hartman were married Dec. 9 in Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus. They reside on a farm near LeMars.
Dr. and Mrs. M.F. Joynt will leave Jan. 11 for a three month stay at Phoenix, AZ.
Holy Name Wildcats defeated St. Mary’s of Storm Lake 60-56. Rupp led the Wildcats with 21 points.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Pallesen are the parents of a 9 lb. 2 oz. daughter, born Thursday, Dec. 28. She has been named June Marjorie and has three brothers.
“The Dirty Dozen”, a picture of guerilla warfare during WWII, will be showing at the Marland. It stars Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine.
Ellis Holmes will hold a public auction of his farm machinery, etc, on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
Specials at Clarkson’s Mighty Mite IGA this week include 2 lbs. Folger’s coffee-$1.29; beef sides 49¢ lb., and a 1 lb. can of salmon 59¢.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnson of Cleghorn are the parents of an 8 lb. 7 oz. son, born Dec. 30, 1967, named Kevin Dean. He has two brothers.
50 Years Ago -1973
Keith Rupp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rupp of Marcus, received a B.S. degree from Mankato State College on Dec. 15. He graduated from Marcus Community High in 1968.
Carl Digel, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 28, at Cherokee Care Center. He had lived most of his life at Marcus. He was born in Germany. His wife passed away in 1954. Survivors are nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon V. Brichat of Clyde, KS, were killed in a plane crash Tuesday night, Dec. 16. Mrs. Brichat was born in Marcus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Carney, Sr. The Brichats were the parents of three sons. Marjorie is survived by her mother, six brothers and three sisters.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Albert A. Hohbach, 74, of Marcus died Monday, Jan. 2 in a Cherokee hospital after a sudden illness. He is survived by a son and two brothers.
Superintendent Jon Mitts will give a presentation, ‘The Future of Marcus School District” on Wednesday, Jan. 11th at 7:30 p.m. for school district residents.
The heirs of Mary Wilberding will hold a land auction of the 220 acre grain and livestock farm, located south across the road from the Maryhill Church on Monday, Jan. 16, 1978.
The Marcus Board of Education received permission from the Dept. of Public Instruction to spend up to $7,000 on the purchase of a full-size station wagon for transporting special education students.
40 Years Ago –1983
Beth Mugge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Mugge of Cleghorn and a student at Stanford Univ. in California is one of four Stanford graduate students chosen to attend a ten day program at Berlin, Germany.
Mrs. Roger T. Leavitt, 75, of Marcus passed away Dec. 31 after a lengthy illness. Survivors include her husband, a son, two daughters, and two step-children, two brothers and three sisters.
Herb Cottrell replaced Fred Ducommun on the Cleghorn Park committee.
Cherokee County residents recorded 119 admissions to the Univ. of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics during the fiscal year 1981-1982.
John Barry, 91, of Marcus died Friday, Jan. 7, in a LeMars nursing home after a long illness. Survivors include two sons and a daughter.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Stanley O. Nervig, president of West Iowa Banc Corp., and Carleton C. Van Dyk president of Farmer’s State Bank of Marcus, announce the sale of the Farmer’s State Bank of Marcus to West Iowa Banc Corp. of Marcus. The name of the bank and personnel will continue as is.
Steve and Renea Ogren are the parents of an 8 lb. 5 oz. son, Eric James, born Dec. 27th. He has a sister, 4 1/2.

Amy Lindsay, a 1984 graduate of Marcus Community High School, received a Master’s Degree in Psychology at the Illinois State University at Normal, IL on Dec. 19.
