130 Years Ago – 1893
Miss Fern Wilson of Marcus and Dennis Thornburg were united in marriage Tuesday, Dec. 27. Dennis is a professor of mathematics and natural science at a military academy at Mexico, MO, where they will make their future home.
Tuesday, Dec. 27, Mr. Thomas Walsh and Miss Mary Cawley were united in marriage in the Catholic Church by Father O’Reilly.
125 Years Ago – 1898
I.M. Jackson and Henry Mankey returned from their 30 day southern trip and report a very pleasant trip.
Mr. Reinhart Olson and Miss Louisa Krekow were united in marriage on Monday evening, Dec. 27 by Rev. C.A. Lindahl of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Olson works a farm seven miles south of Marcus.
110 Years Ago – 1903
This area has been visited by hard warm rains during the closing days of December.
The Marcus News has been enlarged from a six to a seven column quarto. It is an excellent paper with the advertisers of Marcus helping to make it so.
Mrs. Simon Clabaugh who lives on a farm north of Marcus, recently husked a record breaking 80 bushels of corn per day.
105 Years Ago – 1918
C.E. Anderson sold all his livestock and farm machinery at auction Dec. 29.
Vincent Walsh has landed in England with the Rainbow Division.
George Krunkle of Hinton has been hired in the Kirk Barber Shop, making it a 3-chair shop.
L.M. Miller purchased the new modern bungalow in the east part of town, owned by Gus Hadel. Mr. Miller will move to Marcus March 1st. He rented his farm to J.D. Lakes, manager of the Marcus Cooperative Co.
Ladies skirts will be longer and narrower this season.
90 Years Ago – 1933
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Grauer are parents of a son, born last Saturday.
Mrs. Mary Agnes Riley and Joseph Tschill, two well-known Marcus citizens, passed away this week.
Members of Trinity League entertained their parents at a banquet and program Monday evening.
Sybil Swanson, a beauty operator at Sioux City, enjoyed the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Swanson.
95 Years Ago – 1928
George Krunkle of Hinton has been engaged in the Kirk Barber Shop making it a three chair concern.
James Nield was one of 176 sturdents to appear on the honor rorll at the University o fIowa College of Liberal Arts.
The Thompson Motor Company unloaded a carload of new Chevrolets with many of the new improvements such as thermostat, cooling and shock absorbing springs and four wheel brakes.
85 Years Ago -1938
Miss Evelyn Potter became the bride of Kenneth Prunty in the Christian Church in Cleghorn in a candlelight and greenery setting.
William Holck, 45, well known farmer living near Fielding, was seriously injured and his son Willis, 19, was bruised in an auto accident.
K. W. Nagle will be the manager of the skating rink and operate the Japanese Gardens every weekend this winter.
Melvin Dorr played Santa Claus to the local telephone employees for the West Iowa Telephone company and presented them with a turkey.
80 Years Ago – 1943
Cpl. John Francis Dunn is attending Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga.
Clinton Weber, employee of the West Iowa Telephone Co., fell from a telephone pole while making repairs on a line in the country. His safety belt broke. The extent of his injuries is unknown as yet.
After January 1st, milk will be l1¢/quart and 6¢/pint from Weimer’s Dairy, Dixson & Leavitt & Means Dairy.
The Marcus gas rationing panel announces that 1,100 rationing books were issued to approximately 700 people.
Jethro Stowater is advertising a public sale to be held at his farm south of Marcus on December 28.
75 Years Ago -1948
Mrs. Wallace Healy, 45, of Marcus passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 21. She is survived by her husband and a son Paul.
Elmer Bjornstad and his vocal and instrumental students presented an enjoyable Christmas concert to a large audience.
The men’s D-X bowling team and the ladies Satterlee Drug team lead their respective leagues at the end of the first half.
Mrs. George Grauer, who has taught the Adult Men’s Sunday School class of the First Methodist Church for fifteen years, was honored at a surprise Christmas party hosted by Mrs. Walter Harvey and Mrs. Ronald Porter, Sr. in the former’s home.
About 20 hunters turned out Sunday for the weekly fox hunt of the Marcus Sportsmen’s Club. Russell McDonnell bagged the only fox of the day.
70 Years Ago – 1953
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bancroft of Havanna, AR are spending the holidays with his mother, Mrs. Anna Bancroft, and his brother Mark Bancroft and family.
About fifty ladies and friends of Bon Vista Club enjoyed a “Come As You Are Breakfast” Friday morning in the William Woltman home in the Mt. Pleasant area.
Sue Leonard of Seattle, WA, was united in marriage to LaVern Heesch on Dec. 17.
Robert Seglem will hold a farm sale January 9. He has bought a dairy and walnut farm near Yarn Hill, OR.
Gordon and Donald Garvin will hold a farm sale January 8, offering 64 head of cattle, farm machinery and miscellaneous equipment.
65 Years Ago – 1958
Bud Nagle is a patient in Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars, a victim of the flu and complications.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Geringer and Mr. and Mrs. Dave Westhusing were Christmas dinner guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Ballard.
Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas star in “Gunfight At The O.K. Corral” showing at the Marland Theater.
60 Years Ago – 1963
All three Marcus basketball teams posted wins. The Eagles defeated LeMars Gehlen 71 to 56. The Eaglettes defeated Remsen Union 63-26 and Holy Name Wildcats topped Remsen-Union 58-37.
Myrtle Brant of Battle Creek and Murl Hansen of Granville were united in marriage Sat., Dec. 1 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Remsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Clarkson and son of Phoenix, AZ arrived to spend the holidays with their parents, Mrs. Walter Clarkson and Henning Nestor, and other relatives.
A year of community-wide effort will be climaxed here with a dedication of the Marcus Community Medical Center by a program in the new school gym.
Charles Addy and Meredith Reinert regned as king and queen at the recent Holy Name homecoming.
55 Years Ago – 1968
Mary Case, nurse at Marcus Community School, gave the tuberculin test to 195 students from public school and 57 from Holy Name. All were negative.
Lloyd William Barnes, 85, passed away suddenly in his home on Wednesday, Dec. 20. He was the son of Belle V. (McGinnis) and Edward Fans Barnes, born Dec. 27, 1881 at Marcus. He is survived by two daughters, a son, two stepdaughters, and a brother.
Several relatives and friends called in the Marlin Gries home to help Ronnie Dean Gries celebrate his 3rd birthday.
50 Years Ago – 1973
Patricia Smith, daughter of Jim and Betty Smith, has been accepted at Nettleton Commercial College at Sioux Falls. She is enrolled in the Medical Secretary program.
Ken’s Foodland specials include Miracle Whip salad dressing 49¢/quart, 3 lb. can Butternut coffee $2.39, and Campbell’s tomato soup 10¢/can.
Earl Flanagan, after 37 years with the Marcus Post Office, has finally decided to call it quits and hand in his resignation.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Medco salutes Mike & Kathy Ortmann, owner-operators of the Marcus Inn a restaurant and bar complex at 305 N. Main St. Mike is an ex-Navy cook. Besides Mike and Kathy, they have ten full and part time employees.
Beverly Nervig and Jon Stowater, both of Marcus, were named to the Dean’s List for the fall quarter at ISU in Ames.
Robert W. Thomson, 89, of Cleghorn died Monday, Dec. 19 after a long illness. He is survived by his widow, 2 sons, and a daughter.
Former Marcusites Anthony and Lynette Nilles, now of LeMars, are the parents of a 9 lb. daughter, Merrie Noel, born Dec. 25. She has 3 brothers and 3 sisters to welcome her home.
Tom Steffens was the winner of the oven-broiler door prize at the I.P.S. Open House.
40 Years Ago –1983
Jack and Maxine Shea are the parents of a 7 lb. 15 oz. son, Daniel David, born Friday, Dec.10. He has four brothers and 2 sisters.
The base salary of a beginning teacher at Marcus with a BA degree with be $12,725 next year.
Laurie Kruse of Sturgis, SD and Dean Behrens of Meriden are planning a May 15, 1983 wedding.
Mrs. Harold G. Johnson, 64, nee Bonita Auchstetter, passed away suddenly Monday, Dec. 27. She is survived by her husband, a daughter & 2 sons.
35 Years Ago – 1988
The Marcus Rescue Dept. received $20,000 from Cherokee County as a result of Federal Revenue Sharing Funds and $20,000 from an anonymous donor.
Dan & Sharon Johnson of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb. 13 1/2 oz. son, named Kyle Phillip, born Dec. 15. Kyle has 2 brothers and a sister.
Marcus Eagle girls defeated Woodbury Central 46-29. Stephanie Simons was the leading scorer with 18 points.
The Cherokee County Fund Drive has reached a total of $20,415. Last years total was $22,823.
Diane Wilkens won the Senior Citizens Quilt Raffle. Proceeds of $404 will be given to the Senior Citizens Center.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Pat Bunt, Grand Knight of Holy Name Knights of Columbus, presented Don Agostine of Cherokee Work Activity Center with a $477 check from the Tootsie Roll Sale.
Rory Booth is improving as well as can be expected from injuries received in an auto accident. Funds are pouring in at Farmer’s State Bank and benefits are planned to assist with the huge hospital and doctor bills.
