The Inter-State Amusement Company will hold a three day carnival in Marcus, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 12 -14.
The salary of James Rae, Marcus postmaster was raised from $1,500 to $1,600 per year.
105 Years Ago – 1917
C.L. Farran has traded his barber shop, equipment, and business here to J.K. Kirk for a barber shop in Matlock.
One of the prettist fashions of the season is the wearing of an embroidered taffeta coast with dresses of cloth or silk.
85 Years Ago -1937
The salaries of all postal employees have been reduced by the postal department.
Harold Booth and Vance Marquis who hold commission in the officers reserve corps in the U.S. Army left for Fr. Des Moines to instruct two weeks.
Delaney Bros. Moved from one section of their store to the other after 41 years of business in one spot.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Joe Ament, who is stationed at Norfolk, VA, writes of his work with the Navy and of the U.S.O.
The city water tower has been undergoing a house cleaning with repairs amounting to $450.00
Ted Treinen is assisting in the J.A. Michaelson store during the illness of John Clarkson who underwent a major operation.
75 Years Ago -1947
Two Marcus youths sustained serious injuries in a motorcycle-car crash Sunday afternoon, and are in the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. They are Lynn, 17, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Simons, and Don, 17, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ray Peters.
Another sneak thief made a haul from Jaminet Mobil Service about eleven o’clock Wednesday morning netting about $60.
P. James Bird has accepted a civil service position as replacement clerk in the local post office.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Iowa is on the way toward production of its second largest corn crop. This year’s harvest is expected to reach 60 bushels per acre.
Mr. & Mrs. James Cave announce the arrival of a daughter born in the Sacred Heart Hospital. She has been named Joyce Elaine.
LaVerne Miller has accepted a position in the Illinois Central depot in LeMars. LaVerne had formerly been employed in the I.C. depot in Cherokee.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Trinity Lutheran Church was the setting for the wedding July 20 when Donna Shaw became the bride of Richard Dorr.
The new Marcus swimming pool is now open and operating in full blast.
The new street signs and house numbers are expected to arrive very shortly and the Marcus Fire Department, sponsors of the project have already started accepting payments for the house numbers.
Emmet Ryan, Marcus farmer, is in St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City as the result of a fall at his farm Friday morning.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Little Kim Carlson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Eric Carlson, who was run over by a tractor last week, apparently is no worse for the experience after a checkup Monday revealed no particular damage.
Lawrence Rupp, who farms south east of Marcus on Highway 5 and 3, is still somewhat battered about the head as the result of being in the past of a falling two-by-six while helping with construction job on his farm.
Will Kaiser, who farms north of Marcus, bought the Mrs. Anna Ohlendorf estate property which brought $14,000.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Jeffery Rassel, young son of Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Rassel, underwent arm surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City.
The Oakdale Evangelicial Free Church located six miles north of Meriden, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the church.
Mike Bolton, a sailor on the aircraft carrier Francklin D. Roosevelt, called his parents Monday evening to say that the big ship was leaving for a nine months tour of Mediterranean duty.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Sokolowski and Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Theisen will be honored at a dance to be held at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen August 19.
Sharon Flanagan, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Flanagan, graduated with honors from WIT, August 4, at the Municipal Aditorium in Sioux City.

Sp/4 William C. Woodall, son of Mr. & Mrs. W.E. Woodall, was one of six persons specially recognized at an award ceremony held at the army base in Daegu, Korea.

Jane Garvin, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Garvin, received her diaploma from the LPN Dept. of Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.
James Hoover returned to school at Quincy, IL, Saturday after spending three weeks vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoover.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Mrs. Albert (Alma) Krekow, 92, of Remsen, passed away Wednesday in the nursing home in Remsen.
S/Sgt. And Mrs. Vance Bruce Marquis and family returned to their home in Grand Forks, ND, on Friday after a three week visit in the home of his parents, Col. And Mrs. Vance Marquis.

Marine Lance Cpl. Gary Powell, son of Robert and Joan Powell of Pierson, has been awarded a Meritorious Mast while serving at Marine Barracks, Navel Weapons Station in Earle Colts, Neck N.J.
A 90th birthday open house was held for Mrs. Hallie Glines on Saturday at Grace Methodist Church.
Florence Kirchoff, 91, and a resident of Fergus Falls, Minn., and former resident of Marcus passed away Saturday at the Broen Home at Fergus Falls.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Abyy Schlenger, duaghter of Ed and Kate Schlenger of rural Marcus , was chosen Little Miss Marcus of 1992.
Samantha Douglas and Jonathan Erickson are planning an Oct. 10 wedding in Lake City, IA.
Bike winners ar the Marcus fair were Isaac Schlenger and Liz OGren.

Erica Kunzweiler received first place in the Costume category as a “hippie “ at the fair.
Roger Nelson and Marv Simons were inducted into the Marcus Fair Hall of Fame Thursday night.
