110 Years Ago – 1912
N.T, Nash has accepted a position with the Oakdale Auto Co. at a salary of $90 a month and began his work Monday. Mr. Nash’s work will be to set cars up at their destination.
Louis Weber, 7 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Weber, is quite sick.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Ray Meylor, who has been in a hospital in Sioux City for nine weeks, is expected to be able to return home this week. He underwent two operations for appendicitis and his condition was serious for a time.
Paul Carey returned Tuesday from a trip to Omaha. Mr. Carey last week resigned his position at the Marcus Cooperative Store. His successor is Charles Swindle of Cleghorn.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Ben Delaney, former postmaster, is a candidate for county auditor on the Democratic ticket.
Marje Lommis had her candy shop redecorated in a pleasing green and gold color scheme.
Mrs. Hattie Wilson, who has spent the winter months in Hollywood, CA, expects to return to Marcus this week.
85 Years Ago -1937
Evelyn Rocene of Little Falls, MN, and Earl Johnson were united in marriage in the bride’s home at 8:00 Saturday, April 24.
Maxine Kirchoff was eliminated Saturday in fourth place in Des Moines where she competed with 100 entrants in written spelling contest.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Dalton are the proud parents of a daughter born Thursday.
80 Years Ago – 1942
A terrific wind, which at times reached a velocity of 40-50 miles per hour wrecked power lines and telephone lines, broke windows and did other damage on Monday.
The individual consumer registration of the sugar rationing program will be held at the high school gym May 4-7.
Charles Rassel was operated on Thursday at Sioux City for removal of cartilage in the elbow.
E.P. Quirin is now nicely settled in his office quarters in the southwest room upstairs in the bank building.
75 Years Ago -1947
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Green of Cleghorn have rented rooms in the Geibe apartments for six weeks, moving in the first of this week. They plan to attend summer school at Morningside College in Sioux City.
The natives, Marcia Mouw, Shirley Mayer, Margaret Rae, Sherillean Brownmiller, Carol Booth and Barbrar Wallins served the menu at the Junior Senior annual banquet.
Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Schmillen returned home Saturday evening from a scenic two weeks’ tour of the West Coast sponsored by the R.E. A. of which Mr. Schmillen is county chairman.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen are the proud parents of a daughter, Patricia Irene, born Wednesday, May 21, in the Sacred Heart hospital at LeMars.
A birthday party honoring Sharon Lage on her twelfth birthday was held Friday afternoon following school in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Lage.
Ellis Holmes, Howard Peavy and Albert Nielsen returned home Tuesday from Minnesota where they had been fishing since Saturday at Noel Wilson’s resort near Park Rapids.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Following the morning services last Sunday at Peace Lutheran church the members of the congregation went in a body to the building site directly south of the present church building where a groundbreaking ceremony was held.
John Peterson arrived her Sunday from Santa Monica, CA where he has been employed the past winter with an aircraft company. The Petersons will leave for California this Sunday to make their home.
Despite inclement weather, the open house at Holy Name convent, May 12 was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by some 400 guests.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Staff Sergeant Gene Franck, serving with the US Army in Germany, was named by his unit as soldier of the month of April.
Thirty relatives and friends were present Tuesday evening following graduation in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Nielsen to honor their son Dick.
The enlistment of Herbert Means of Marcus in the US Army makes a total of eleven brothers to serve in the various armed services. The men are the sons of Mrs. Lena Means and the late Humphrey Means of Marcus.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Miller attended a flute recital presented by their daughter, Carol, at Drake University in Des Moines Sunday.
Carol Keffeler, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Keffeler, has completed her nurses training at Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines. She will graduate May 28.
The Grand Meadow third and fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Dorothy Griffith and Mrs. Mabel Crail, took their pupils to Cherokee Friday where they toured the Bell Telephone Company and the Sanford Museum.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Keith Bratcher of Kansas City are parents of their first child, a daughter born May 20. She has been named Heather Jean.
Karen Fischer will graduate May 26, from Washington University Medical Center with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy.
Miss Theresa Kass, 99, died May 16 at Happy Siesta Retirement Home in Remsen after a four day illness.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Dr. George Raymond Hobson was born May 23, 1905 near Burt, Iowa and died May 23, on his 72nd birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Schroeder announce the engagement of their daughter Donita, to Marlen Harris of Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Specht of Cleghorn announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Diane, to Steve Pitts.
40 Years Ago – 1982
Richard Moeller, 60, former Marcus resident, died in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 1.
Carol Brady, Julie Rosener, Marilyn Theisen, Susie Sand and Angie Dorr are representing Marcus High School at the State Track Meet this Friday and Saturday in Des Moines.
35 Years Ago – 1987
On Wednesday afternoon teachers and staff of the Marcus school held a faculty reception for a long time teacher who is retiring. Mrs. Kloster. She was presented a plaque from the student body reading “For eighteen years of dedicated service.”
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Powell were honored with a surprise housewarming party for their new home. Guests from Remsen, LeMars, Cherokee, Sioux City, Holstein, Kingsley and Pierson attended.
Susanne Knudson of Iowa City arrived home Wednesday to spend her summer vacation in the parental Charles Knudson home.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Susan Nielsen, former Marcus resident, has been promoted to Vice President-Assistant to President for Integrated Resources Equity Corporation in New York City.
Mike Nelson of the Remsen Jaycees, formerly of Marcus, was honored with a Jaycee International Senatorship at the Iowa Jaycees Spring Convention in Sioux City.
Ruth Keffeler, a charming shopper of Lehan’s Foodland, won $1,000 after purchasing a lottery ticket at Lehan’s
25 Years Ago – 1997
Chad and Sara Lang have purchased the Big Booth from Gary and Sheila Booth. It will be called The Family Table, with a projected opening from June 20. The Booth family operated here for 20 years.
Heather Tentinger, an MMC and Creighton graduate and Darrin Johnson also an MMC Graduate are planning a July 26 wedding. Karl Stodden, Andrew Kleis, Matthew Knudson, Amber Schneider, Sandra Tinkham and Joel Ehrig are featured in the MMC Focus; Class of 97”. All plan to further their education.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Charles Simmons, 59 of Marcus died Sunday, May 19 from injuries received in an automobile accident.
A retirement reception will be held for Martha Hueser on Sunday May 26 at the Primary Building lunch room in Marcus.
