110 Years Ago – 1912
H. C. Loomis returned Friday from San Francisco, CA where he had spent the past six weeks looking after business matters.
Mrs. Mike Tracy left Tuesday for Canada where the Trays plan to make their future home.
Farmers are preparing to plant corn if conditions continue favorable, much of it will be planted next week.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Peters Bros. Report the following sales of Ford touring cars, all of which were delivered within the past week: Nelson Bros., Guido Berendes, John Sand, Hans Jorgenson, Will Freckter, Will Bass, Nace Collins, Ben Ohlendorf.
Walter Knox has drawn up a map of Marcus, the size of which is 3×5 feet. Having a scale of one inch per hundred feet. The map gives the names of the streets, names of all property owners, sizes of lots, location of all public buildings; etc. he has had the drawings copyrighted, and is now taking orders for them.
J.W. Armbruster and Charles Swanson, both of Sioux City, purchased the planetarium business of Sherman Hoxie and took possession of the establishment today.
Marcus is one of 50 towns in Iowa to furnish volunteers in excess of their quota to the army.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Marcus and Primghar polo teams played a fast game Sunday on the polo field west of Paullina, Marcus winning from Primghar by a score of 11 to 6.
Lyle Birch’s Essex coupe, stolen from the streets of Marcus Sunday night, was found by LeMars police Monday morning near St. Joseph’s school on the outskirts of the town. Apparently the car had been abandoned when the gas supply ran out.
Paulline Jenkins, smallest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Art Jenkens, broke her arm while playing one day last week.
The garage and tool house of Mrs. Mary Coburn were burned to the ground Tuesday evening.
85 Years Ago -1937
Jeanne Nolan, 14, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Nolan, o f Rock Township, won second place in the interstate spelling contest held Friday at Omaha.
Clarence Mason, 65, of this city, passed away Thursday morning, May 6 at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City.
Henry Brown was seriously injured last week when attacked by a bull.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Jimmie Smith has the honor of holding the first individual state record ever held in Marcus high school, by winning first in the state music contest held in Spencer last weekend. The Marcus mixed chorus also placed first. Second place winners were the girls trio, boys quartet and trombone solo by LeRoy Mossman.
Mr. & Mrs. John Clarkson entertained at dinner Sunday in honor of their son John, on his second birthday.
Charlotte Alesch, who is employed in Los Angeles, CA arrived Monday morning for a two week visit in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch, Sr.
75 Years Ago -1947
The Marcus fire department was called to the Don Nestor farm two miles north of town by a brooder house fire. The Nestors lost 700 baby chicks, and the brooder house was badly damaged before the fire boys were able to extinguish the fire.
Mrs. Hallie Glines has resigned as night operator for West Iowa Telephone Company after nine efficient years of service. She is succeeded by Marjorie Schnoes.
Mr. & Mrs. Wilbur Miller are parents of a daughter, Linda Annette, born Wednesday, April 16, in Sioux Valley hospital at Cherokee.
70 Years Ago – 1952
The Lanham Nursing home in Marcus, operated by Mr. & Mrs. A.C. Lanham, former Cherokee residents, is now open for business. The Lanhams started operations last month in the home previously owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Garvin in east Marcus.
The Marcus community was deeply saddened this week by the death of Bernhard Blietz, 70, who passed away at his home in Marcus. He and his wife operated the Marcus Greenhouse here for twenty six years.
Mrs. Herman Fischer entertained several children Saturday in honor of her daughter, Nancy’s third birthday. The little guests enjoyed a movie during the afternoon after which they enjoyed treats at the Fischer home.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Wylie Satterlee Wednesday assumed the management of the Marcus Liquor Store, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Merle Baumgardner. Mr. Baumgardner is entering the insurance field.
Mr. & Mrs. Howard Peavy entertained at dinner Sunday honoring their daughter, Doris who was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church Sunday morning. The occasion was also Doris’ Birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. David Nelson are parents of a boy born Monday, April 29 at the Alta memorial Hospital. He has been named John LeRoy.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Wayne Rassel returned to Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars Tuesday to have the forefinger on his left hand amputated. The hand was badly lacerated in a corn sheller accident last week.
Staff Sergeant Gene Franck, who is serving with the army in Germany, recently won the battalion championship. Gene bowled a high game of 246 for a 547 series.
Mrs. Gertrude Peterson of Marcus announces the engagement and forthcoming marriage of her daughter Nancy Ann, to Max Drefke son of Mr. & Mrs. Delmar Drefke also of Marcus.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Members of the Marcus Garden Club assisted by the city men of Marcus, replaced some trees and shrubbery at the Gund Memorial Library. They also planted four trees at the Medical Center.
Mr. & Mrs. Irvin Deichmann entertained at a dinner Sunday, April 23, in honor of their son, Daniel Irvin, who was baptized at Peace Lutheran church.
Mrs. Jim Kruse is opening a beauty salon in her farms home seven miles north of Marcus. It will be known as Marilyn’s Beauty Salon.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mr. & Mrs. Ron Schilmoeller are parents of a baby boy born Thursday, April 27. The new arrival has been named William Joseph.
Kirk Alesch, 14 years old son of Mr. & Mrs. James Alesch, was injured Sunday evening when the cycle he was riding hit a car driven by Larry Slagter, broadside.
David Grage, 23 of rural Marcus, was listed in good condition Tuesday night at St. Joseph Mercy hospital in Sioux City with head injuries he suffered Friday afternoon in a motorcycle car accident.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Farmers State Bank, announces the start of construction to enlarge the present bank building and construct additional office space and storage room. The interior of the bank will also receive a complete renovation, which will include new carpeting throughout the bank along with curtains, wallpaper, and other items necessary to complete the decorating entirely.
The Marcus high school band received a I “superior” rating at large group contest held at Rock Rapids last Saturday. The band played “Suite Concertante” by Nelhybel and “Amparito Roca” by Texidor. The band was under the direction of Jerry Bertrand.
40 Years Ago – 1982
The Marcus High School track girls have qualified for the State Track Meet this Friday and Saturday in Des Moines. Members that qualified are Carol Brady, Julie Rosener, Marilyn Theisen, Susie Sand and Angie Dorr.
Richard Moeller, 60, former Marcus resident, passed away in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Pat Collins caught a 7 pound Walleye last Sunday at Storm Lake.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Sharon Beth Hesse, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Hesse of Marcus, graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City at the conclusion of the Spring semester.
Dick Robinson, a Marcus golf club leaguer from Meriden, shot a hole-in-one on the 4th hole last Friday. Robinson used 5 wood on the 205yard par 3.
Tom Leavitt was the guest of honor at a party at the Roger Leavitt home following his graduation from he University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
Dr. John Mayer has accepted a position with Palo Duro Veterinary services, Canyon, TX, a feedlot consultation practice.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Conrad and Deb Ebert are pleased to announce the arrival of their first child, a daughter Danielle Diane, born on May 1.
The congregation of Grace United Methodist Church will celebrate its 25th anniversary in its present building on Sunday, May 17, with a full day of activities.
Leonard and Mildred Bindner of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, May 22.A open house followed at Holy Name Hall.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Kenneth Walter Pitts, 65 former Marcus resident passed away at LaJolla, CA January 22. Survivors include a son a daughter and a brother. The body was cremated and the ashes were interred in Marcus Amherst Cemetery.
Kim Moats of Marcus and Dennis Phillips of Remsen were married February 19th in Marcus. They are at home at McCook Lake, SD where both are employed at Gateway 2000.
