120 Years Ago – 1902
The thermometer registered 4 degrees below Sunday morning and wheat sowing is at a standstill
J.E. Sweeny has purchased the S.H. Henley property on the west side of Marcus and will soon occupy it.
115 Years Ago – 1907
T.R. Fenton sold the Skewis business on Main Street, south of Hoxie’s Restaurant, to J.C. Tomey.
110 Years Ago – 1912
Mr. & Mrs. John Hanham celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Wednesday. The honored couple were feted at a dinner and reception in the Methodist Church. They received gold coins in the mount of $55.
Vic Sjostrom, who has for several years conducted a successful wholesale and egg business in Marcus, with branch shipping places in a number of northwest Iowa towns, is enlarging his business to include feed, coal and lumber which he will offer to the retail trade.
W.E. Willey, who owns a farm of 280 acres just south of this city and has operated it for the past thirty years, has retired from active farm life and last week moved in to Marcus in the Jenks property which he has purchased. Mr. Willey was a pioneer settler of Cherokee county and bought his land for $22.50 per acre and it is now one of the best farms in this locality.
105 Years Ago – 1917
The board of the Marcus Library Association have found it necessary to obtain a larger room for their books and will move in a room in the second story of the Exchange Bank Building the first of April.
Announcements were received in Marcus last Friday of the marriage of Mr. Floyd Sylvester, son of Mr. & Mrs. V.F. Sylcester of this place and Miss Margaret Hyndman, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Hyndman of Cherokee, which took place March 8.
90 Years Ago – 1932
W.O. Brandt died Tuesday morning in the Sioux Valley hospital at Cherokee. He had been ill for a month and during that time failed rapidly.
From the warm California like weather of last week, the atmosphere has changed to a state bordering on Iceland’s frigid temperature. The roads around Marcus, which were bottomless last week, because of the spring thaws, are now frozen up and are a series of ruts.
The Ed Meylor family has moved from the farm in Amherst town ship to one in Marcus town ship, vacated by the Carl Miller family who have gone to Larrabee.
85 Years Ago -1937
Mrs. Helen Miller returned home Monday from California where she spent the winter months in Los Angeles.
The Marcus Golden Eagles were eliminated by the strong Hawarden team in the opening game of sectional tournament at LeMars Thursday night, closing their season with sixteen win, and five loss record.
Maxine Kirchoff scored the highest in the spelling bee at Amherst No. 1 school, and will be their representative in the Cherokee County spelling bee. Miss Kirchoff also represented Amherst No. 1 last year.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Mr. & Mrs. Jay Peters took their son, David to Sioux City Wednesday where he took the bus for Santa Monica., CA where he is employed at the Douglas Aircraft Factory.
The redecorating of the Catholic Church was started last Monday. It will take over eight weeks to complete the redecorating and will cost over $3,000. The Luchtel Studio of Milford is doing the work.
Open house and dedication services will be held Tuesday, March 17, for the new Marcus Municipal Building. The new building is located on the corner north of Grey’s Garage and contains over 70,000 bricks of the old Marcus water tower, which was torn down in 1941.
75 Years Ago -1947
H.E. Means, who recently purchased the Lone Eagle Service station a mile south of town from the Marcus Oil Company, took over operation of the station this week.
E.E. Evans has announced the plans for a new business block for Marcus. The proposed building will be located on the north of the Evans Motor Company. Mr. Evans recently secured the Massey Harris Implement dealership for this territory. Charles and Albert Nielsen also plan a building to house the Nielsen Electric Shop, as soon as materials are available. The new building will be located on lots south of Grey’s Garage at the south end of the business section.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Pitts are the parents of a daughter born Monday evening at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. Little Pamella Kay weighted 6 pounds 2 ounces.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Glenn Miller, who has been serving his apprenticeship as an embalmer and funeral director with the Nelson Funeral Home in Marcus, recently received his license from the State Department of Health in Iowa.
Mrs. Henry Zembsch had the Misfortune to falling Wednesday morning and breaking a leg. She was taken to the hospital where her leg was placed in a cast.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Kolb, well known farm couple near Cleghorn observed their fortieth wedding anniversary with a open house on March 7.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Lloyd Barnes recently bought the “Pimperton barn” west of the business section and will have it moved in sections to his farm near Calumet. He purchased the structure from Ellis Holmes, who bought the lot and build form George Pimperton several months ago.
There will be no competition on the ballot for school officers at the Cleghorn election March 11. Candidates for directors are Leo French and Lyle McIntosh, whose three-year term expire.
Mr. & Mrs. George Scott entertained at a family dinner Sunday in honor of their son Charles, who is home on leave before leaving for Germany where he will be stationed for a year.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. George Scott have moved into the home which they recently purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Dorr. Mr. & Mrs. Dorr and daughter, Thelma Kay, left last week for California where they will make their home.
A combination of old and new snow and storm winds completely clocked highways and roads Monday and Tuesday all over northwest Iowa. In the Marcus community all farm roads were still blocked, but primary roads were beginning to be opened.
Eighty neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Berger Friday evening for a charivari. The evening was spent playing cards and lunch was served.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mrs. Ella Galigan and Mary Lou attended the wedding of Sandra Galigan and Delmann Stausberg in Luverne on Saturday.
Jill Berlund celebrated her 12th birthday with a slumber party in her home. Guests were all the girls in her class, Beverly Hiller, Susan Jenness, Joann Lehnoff, June Bierman and Jane Culler.
Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Harnack of Remsen observed their 40th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Sunday, February 26.
50 Years Ago – 1972
The Little Sioux Conference boys basketball coaches recently selected their all-conference teams. Gene Cave and Doug Hogue were selected on the second team while John Ladenthin revived honorable mention.
On March 9, Stanley Nervig was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Farmers State Bank to fill the vacancy of the board due to the resignation of Steven Van Dyke.
Mr. & Mrs. Bob Lauters announce the arrival of a 7lb 10 oz son Jeffrey Allan, born March 9.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Hazen returned Thursday from McAllen, TX where they had spent the past seven weeks. Enroute home they spent a day with Mr. & Mrs. Walter Fuhrmann in Corpus Christi, and five days with Mr. Hazen’s sister, Mr. & Mrs. James Whitworth and family, in New Orleans.
Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Spieler of Sioux City are the parents of a 7 pound 4 1/2 ounce son born March 1. He has been named Gary Martin and has three brothers, Mike, Steve and Pat to welcome him home.
Mr. & Mrs. Earl Carney of Marcus announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Sheri Lynn, to Michael Robinson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Robinson of Meriden. An April 16 wedding is planned
40 Years Ago – 1982
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Theisen would like to announce the engagement of their daughter Christy, to Scott Carlson, son of Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Carlson all of Marcus. A June 4th wedding is planned.
On March 6, Mr. & Mrs. Glen Ohlendorf were completely surprised by neighbors, friends and family who came to their home to help them celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary.
In the Marcus Eaglet there are five seniors spotlights: Paul Unkur, John Gordon, Gina Busch, Steve Gettner & Julie Rosener.
35 Years Ago – 1987
A 10-year anniversary sale will be held this Friday at Motor Parts here in Marcus, according to store manager Doug (Yogi) Rowher.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Mom’s Kitchen will hold an open house on March 21. Special feature of the day will be a hamburger and French fries for only $1.00.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Monday night the fate of the Meriden school building was decided by the MMC School Board. In a 5-2 vote it was decided to close the building to students after this school year.
