120 Years Ago – 1902
This area was visited by an old time blizzard which continued all day and most of the night. The farmers are delighted with all the snowfall as it will furnish moisture and assist in spring plowing.
115 Years Ago – 1907
James Williams held his sixth annual bred sow sale at his Maple Grove farm west of Marcus. There were a total of 50 Durocs and Polards sold. The Durocs averaged $63.50 per head, with most of them going out of the country.
110 Years Ago – 1912
New high grade shoes for ladies in lace or buttons with new shaped heel and toes are selling for $3 and $3.50 at Turners.
Miss Florence Mae McGee of Amherst was united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Albertus Lester Addy on Tuesday evening February 27 in the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. J.E. McGee.
105 Years Ago – 1917
H. Niemann has made arrangements for the demonstration of the Copperclad range at his hardware store all next week.
Neighbors driving 21 teams helped Frank Barthel to move his goods to Marcus last Thursday for shipment to Ward, SD where he and his family will reside on a farm.
Earl Wirt, son of Mrs. Margaret Wirt of Amherst was united in marriage to Mildred Reindell at the home of her parents in Hurley, SD Thursday evening.
Walter Ferguson and Clara Cunningham were married today in the Gus Krekow home in Tilden township were they reside.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Mrs. Katherine Treinen passed away Saturday at the age of 90 years.
Mrs. George Beaton, who has been seriously ill with double pneumonia for the past month, is slowly recovering.
Mrs. Elizabeth Francks celebrated her 91st birthday Saturday with her children and grandchildren gathering in her home for the day.
Bernard Seegar has been working in the Post Office for a few days during the illness of Floyd Know.

Wagner’s Cash store is planning a large formal opening Friday and Saturday.
Bouts drawing the greatest applause at the boxing exhibition of Marcus high school were Junior Trienen vs. Junior Birch, Ed Bruce vs. Henry Ohlendorf and Lenard Witt vs. Lyle Hinspeter.
Mr. & Mrs. Howard Warner and family moved this week to the tenant house of the Paul Bierman farm.
Arthur Slagter was one of thirteen who passed for promotion to machinist in aviation division of the Navy last week.
William Gibson passed away in his home Thursday evening after a three months illness. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, three sons and a daughter.1
80 Years Ago – 1942
Dedication of the newly constructed Municipal Building will be held Tuesday evening, March 17 at eight o’clock with Mark Bancroft acting as master of ceremonies.
$3,000 worth of redecorating at the Catholic Church was started Monday and will take over 8 weeks to complete.
Joe Ament was re-elected chief of the Marcus volunteer fire department Thursday evening at their meeting and Ben Enneking was re-elected assistant chief.
People in the vicinity of Marcus are urged to cooperate in the all-out war effort and have scrap metal removed from their premises to purchasers for steel mills.
75 Years Ago -1947
Mr. & Mrs. Dale Dorr were the guests of honor at a housewarming party held Friday evening with guests including members of the Dorr, Seggerman and Ohlendorf families numbering about sixty.
Mrs. Merle Weicht honored her daughter, Karen Kaye at a birthday party in their home Saturday afternoon on her eighth birthday.
Carl Meyer son of Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer, has accepted a position as bookkeeper for Melvin Dorr and began his new duties on Monday. He had been employed by the Marcus Lumber Company since his recent discharge from the Army,
Urban Wankum has purchased the Roger Leavitt house a block east of the public school and the family moved into its new home Tuesday. The Leavitts built a new home in the east Marcus recently.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Alfred Kosse, son of Mr. & Mrs. Benard Kosse of Marcus, was one of five county men to receive induction notices from the Cherokee county selective board.
The John Irwin family left with their household goods Saturday for their new home in Davis county, Mr. Irwin recently bought a farm near Bloomfield.
The three daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Warren Nitzschke of Washta were guests Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the home of their parents Mr. & Mrs. Charles Gutenkauf, while there parents were looking for a house in Waterloo.
William Fenton, 90, a pioneer resident of Marcus and community, and one of its most highly respected citizens passed away in the nursing home in Cherokee.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The Shorthorn steer shown by Paul Weber at the Sioux Empire Show at Sioux Falls was named reserve champion. The Sunshine Food market bought the steer for $28.
Claude Bortscheller won the silver dollar at the Metcalf Barber Shop last week. Another one is up this week.
Word has been received here that Kenneth Schmillen of Torrance, CA son of Mr. & Mrs. Matt Schmillen is taking training preparatory to becoming a highway patrolman.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Polson announce the arrival of a three month old son, Mark Carlton. He has a two year old sister, Dawn Camille to welcome him home.
Sandra Dorr and the Marcus girls basketball team won the free throw contest at the Aurelia sectional tournament making 21 out of 25 tries good.
Mrs. William Hazen, 88, passed away Tuesday evening, March 27, at the LeMars hospital following a lingering illness.
Resignations of Mrs. Lydia Stroud, Elaine McQueen, Mrs. Carol Alesch and Gerald Bradley have been accepted by the local school board.
Mr. & Mrs. Hans Meehan are the parents of a son, John Steven, born Saturdy, February 17 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.

Mr. & Mrs. Ed Ducommum of Cleghorn were honored by their family on their 45th wedding anniversary Sunday with a dinner at the Normandy in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Roseen entertained a group of little boys Monday evening in honor of Brian on his eighth birthday.
Vana Joy Marquis entertained at a pizza party for her house guests, Susanna Munoy Saturday, February 18. Those present were Theresa Kauffman, Anna Dorr, Diana Stodden, Diana Berger, Phillis Breck and Rose Ann Miller. Susanna received many lovely gifts as a memento of her stay here in Marcus.
The Salon of Beauty , formerly owned by Mrs. Beverly Nielsen, will be taken over by Mrs. James Pearson starting February 28.

Mr. & Mrs. Richard Ruden of Marcus announced the arrival of their first child, a son born Thursday, February 24.
Joan Barry, 39, of Omaha passed away Tuesday, February 29 at Archbishop Bergen Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Behrens of Cleghorn were honored on their 55th wedding anniversary on Sunday with a carry-in dinner brought by guests.
Mr. & Mrs. Clark Skaggs of Cleghorn announce the engagement of their daughter, Diana, to James Johnson, son of Mrs. Catherine Johnson on Marcus.

Craig Dorr announces the Grand Opening of the new Miller Mac Insurance office on Friday, March 4. The new office is located at 414 North Main.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Nelson returned home Thursday evening from Atlanta, where they attended the R.E.C. convention February 20 -24.
The all new Coast-to-Coast store near completion with the new store front and complete interior remodeling nearly completed.
Patti Dreckman won the LeMars sectional free throw contest by making 22 to 25 attempts. Pat placed second in the district to advance her into regional competition.

Mary Kunzweiler, junior has been selected to represent MHS in this year’s Teachers of English Achievement Awards in writing participant.
Sunday afternoon and supper guests in the Mark Roethler home to celebrate Tony’s birthday were Mr. & Mrs. Ray Roethler.
It was a night to remember in girls basketball as senior forward Roxanne Schmillen poured in a record 74 points and the Marcus Eaglettes stayed alive in the tournament by beating Rock Valley.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Bud and Nancy Bush celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Friday, March 6 with an open house followed by a dance at the Marcus Community Center. The event will hosted by their children.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Harvey of Pierson are parents of their first child a daughter named Ashley Christine born February 8. She weighted 7 lbs and 5 ozs.
30 Years Ago – 1992
A fairly large number of folks turned out for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Outlets, Inc on Wednesday, February 26. Outlets, Inc will carry a wide selection of popular brand clothing including Lee, Gitano, Jordache and many more with new merchandise arriving daily.
Roger Nelson or rural Marcus has announced his candidacy for Cherokee County Supervisor for District two.
Richard Dale “Bud” Kenny, 63, of Corpus Chrisit, TX former Marcus resident, died unexpectedly at his home February 21 of a massive heart attack.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Local Marcus grower James Mayer was awarded District 1 runner-up in the 1996 Iowa Master Soybean Growers yield contest at a recent ICIA awards banquet held in Ames, Iowa.
David and Becky Whited of rural Marcus are proud to announce the bith of their first chold Austin James born February 20 at Cherokee Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital.
Helen Gates returned home recently agter a three week vacation spent with three granddaughters in the Denver area.
20 Years Ago – 2002
MMC Middle School held a 7th and 8th grade Spelling Bee, Kimberly Peterson place 1st and Molly Alesch placed 2nd.
Joseph Delaney, age 87, died on February 18 in Palm Desert, California. Joseph was born in Marcus, Iowa and became the third generation to own Delaney’s Grocery and General Store.
