110 Years Ago – 1912
G. Barr has made arrangements for a Market Day sale to be held at the M.R. Nagle yard and barn on Saturday.
Charles Bush, painter and paper hanger, died suddenly and quickly while sitting in a chair Saturday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. E.F. White, who have resided in Marcus the past year, will go to Idaho soon to make their home there.
105 Years Ago – 1917

Tom McDevitt came Wednesday with two car loads of stock from DeWitt and will operate T.E. Herbert’s farm.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Mrs. Rebecca Miller, beloved Marcus pioneer woman, celebrated her 80th birthday quietly at her home on Monday.
Homer Weimer and Earl Flanagan arrived here Thursday evening from California where Homer spent the winter and where Earl has been employed for several years.
Roy Galigan has taken a position with Sjostrom Brothers selling their products in Northwest Iowa territory.
85 Years Ago -1937
Mr. & Mrs. John Apel are the parents of a son, John Anton, born Monday, February 28.
W. J. Satterlee returned from a trip to Texas this week where he visited several famous spots and also in old Mexico.
Little Nona Kruse, who for the last two weeks has been in bed with rheumatic fever, is reported to be recovering.
Marcus high lost to their old rivals, Cleghorn, in the finals of the county basketball tournament Saturday night after defeating Meriden, Grand Meadow and Quimby. Marcus had previously beaten Cleghorn in two games.
Brown’s Dairy announce that they will begin delivery of pasteurized milk March 1.
The Frank Dunn family is moving this week from the farm to the Elizabeth Ames residence in east Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Maxine Miller was initiated into the Ames chapter of Phi Kappa. Miss Miller is a senior in home economics at Iowa State College.
Hope Faul of Morningside, Sioux City, spent the weekend in the home of her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Fremont Faul.
Charles Auchstetter moved recently from his farm to one purchased from A. C. Stanbrough. The Ivan Addy family moved to Marcus township and Peter Wirth of Remen came to the farm vacated by Mr. Addy.
75 Years Ago -1947
M. J. Nagle, accompanied by Silas Means and Clarence Sand, left by automobile for California where Mr. Means will return to his home at Monterey Park and the other gentlemen will spend a month visiting at various places. They also plan to attend the Iowa picnic at Long Beach.
Elmore Wallin has announced the opening of a new body and fender shop in the rear of the Dempsey Grocery.
Richard Drefke, who was the first of the year resigned as manager of the Community Co-operative Oil Company of Marcus, was honored at a recognition party in the Municipal Building.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Dorr, prominent farm couple living southwest of Marcus, were hosts to several hundred guest at a open house on Monday, February 18, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.
Thomas Stoner, 83, the husband of Ruth Alice Hamilton, formerly of Marcus, died at the Methodist Hospital in Des Monies.
The tow Marcus schools, the public and holy Name, have taken over in the sectional tournament in Cherokee and will meet in the Class B finals.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Mr. & Mrs. M. E. Goodrich of Cleghorn will observe their 59th wedding anniversary Saturday. They have spent their entire married life in Cherokee county and the Cleghorn vicinity.
Duane Bork, son of Mr. & Mrs. Roy Bork was placed on the Dean’s list at Augustana College.
Joe Hey died suddenly while at work in his place of business, the Hey Leather Shop, shortly after one o’clock. He was repairing a canvas when he collapsed and fell from his work stool.
Verdell Johnson of Marcus, one of five South Dakota State College meat judging team members, won first place in lamb grading at the Intercollegiate Meat Judging contest in Fort Worth, TX.
60 Years Ago – 1962
Jeanene Rupp, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Rupp, has been selected by vote of the student body of Briar Cliff College of Sioux City as one of the seven finalists among the candidates for queen of the college’s spring formal.
Danny Brownmiller, 11 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. C.A, Brownmiller, was admitted to Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. Danny suffered a fractured leg in a fall from a hay loft.
Mr. & Mrs. Koch of Marcus has purchased the Corner Café from Lovell Roberson, and will open for business. The Robersons will continue to operate the J&D Café and the Golden Slipper.
John Clarkson of the local IGA market recently won a television set in the Lever Bros. Contest. John won a preliminary contest with a display of that company’s soap products and then one of the major prizes by guessing the American and National League batting champions and their percentages.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mr. & Mrs. Marlin Gries announced the arrival of a son born February 8. He has been named Ricky Orlando.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Glackin have purchased the Allen Wagler home tenanted by Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Harms. The Harms family will move into the Eric Carlson hone on Locust Street.
Mr. & Mrs. Morten Mortensen will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday February 19. Open house in their home will be held at the Remsen Municipal Building.
The post nuptial shower honoring Mrs. Paul Jorgensen a recent bride, was held at Fairth Lutheran Church. Corsages were presented to Barbara and her mother, Mrs. Dale Lynn.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Dave Bierman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Francis Bierman , is Marcus first junior ever to qualify for state wrestling competition.
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Snyder of Marcus announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Alice to Chester Wurth son of Mrs. Pascal Wurth of Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Claude Gray entertained Mr. & Mrs. Roger Nelson on their 17th wedding anniversary with dinner Sunday at Uncle Milt’s in Cleghorn.
Susie Nielsen, Barb and Brian Friedrich, Terri Rassel and Colleen Wealon received a I and two II’s in choral reading at state speech.
45 Years Ago – 1977

40 Years Ago – 1982
Last Tuesday night when the Marcus girls defeated the Sutherland team in the second round of the sectional tournament Coach Jerry Martin notched his 400th win in his coaching career.
It was a night to remember in girls basketball as senior forward Roxanne Schmillen poured in a record 74 points and the Marcus Eaglettes stayed alive in the tournament by beating Rock Valley 91-74 in the first round of the Regional Tournament played in LeMars on Saturday.
Board members of the Marcus Fair would like to announce the construction of a large 60×97 foot building on the Fair Grounds.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Craig Anderson of Marcus has received an academic/leadership scholarship from Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa.
Mrs. Charles Addy returned home Friday evening after spending 2 weeks in the Michael and Joan Kelly home at Omaha. She was there getting acquainted with here new granddaughter.
An open house was held Sunday, February 15th to honor Anna Wankum’s 80th birthday.
Margie Bentz placed first place in the Marcus City Tournament. She bowled a 648 series in the single event.
30 Years Ago – 1992
MMC Lady Eagles won their first round sectional game against the Lady Jays of LeMars Gehlen. The score was 67-41. Deanna Henke had 29 points and Stacey Collins had 24.
The Girl Scouts will be celebrating their 80th anniversary during the week of March 12. Marcus girls plan to pick up branches at the park on Monday as their service project for the community.
The annual Community Center Benefit Auction has been scheduled for Saturday, April 4 at 1:00.
25 Years Ago – 1997
Jeff and Julie Frederick of Cleghorn, are the parents of a son, Justin Ray, born February 1, in Cherokee, Just weighted 7 pounds and 15 ounces.
Nicholas Glassmaker, son of William and Maureen Glassmaker of Cherokee, has been accepted as a member of the 1996-97 edition of the Band of the Fighting Irish and the 1997 concert band at the University of Notre Dame.
Mandy Boothby of Marcus was selected as a national outstanding campus leader in the 1997 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in America Junior Colleges.
20 Years Ago – 2002
Eighteen of MMC’s entries at the District Speech Contest at Hartley on Saturday advanced to state competition.
Three Marcus youths qualified recently to compete in the Jaycees State Supershooters competition to be held in the Gowrie in March. The three gained the right to state by placing in the local competition in Marcus and the regional contest in Primghar last Sunday. They are Jesse Kunzweiler, Tim Holmes and Jordan Boekhout.
