125 Years Ago – 1897
Miss Goodburn has purchased the millinery business of Mrs. Lamb and will take possession at once.
Cross and Talbot, deep well drillers who are digging a deep well for C.D. Luther, had the misfortune to lose a drill in the hole . They had to start a new well.
120 Years Ago – 1902
Depot agent Charles Smith shows a tabulated count of 590 carloads of livestock shipped from here in the first eleven months of 1901. For the same period, 226 car loads of corn, wheat, oats and barley were shipped from here, as well as 18 car loads of produce.
115 Years Ago – 1907
Twenty-one cars of stock were shopped from here to Chicago last Saturday and 13 more this week.
Marcus citizens are asking Illinois Central for a new depot to replace the old one.
110 Years Ago – 1912
Work on the new opera house is progressing rapidly. Neal T. Nash is remodeling the upper story of this garage into a very neat little play house, which when completed will present a cozy and theatre-like appearance. On January 13 the Lockers will open the new opera house with their own company, giving a high class entertainment consisting of tow plays a drama entitled “The Vampire” and a comedy entitled “A Dutch Hero.”
105 Years Ago – 1917
Jethro Stowater reports the disappearance of nine hogs on his farm southwest of Marcus yesterday.
Rev. O. S. Bryan at one time pastor of the Methodist Church of Marcus, died in his home in Correctionville.
Thomas E. Herbert, John Meehan and Emmett Meehan were at Ankeny, Iowa last week to attend a Belgian horse sale.
90 Years Ago – 1932
The Trinity Lutheran Church south of Marcus began the publishing of a church paper last month. It will be printed each month.
The town council has passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of fireworks, fire crackers, etc., within the city limits.
This section of Iowa was tucked under the heaviest blanket of snow Tuesday that has been experienced in seven years. More than twelve inches of snow fell in this section.
85 Years Ago -1937
Francis Smith of Cleghorn had a misfortune Monday while riding in a wagon with his father. The gun he was carrying accidentally discharged, shooting him through the foot. With the aid of crutches he is able to attended school.
Mr. & Mrs. J.W.Nield will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Monday and will observe the occasion by keeping there home open to all their friends during the afternoon.
80 Years Ago – 1942
Pfc. Joe Kelly of Fort Leonard Wood, MO, spent a furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Kelly.
Mr. & Mrs. Mike Berger of Sioux City are parents of a son born Tuesday morning . Mrs. Berger is a former Eileen Collins.
John Sand sustained three broken ribs this evening when his car was struck by a car driven by Henry Mueller at the intersection near the News office. Mrs. Sand and Betty were riding in the Sand car and Mr. Mueller was alone.
Esther Mortiz of Calumet, will become the bride of Aaron Waller, son of Mr. & Mrs. Joe Waller of Marcus, January 14.
75 Years Ago -1947
Services were held in the Free Evangelical Church of Meriden for John Gibson who passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Joen Boever have purchased the Marcus Café from Lloyd Jones and will have their official opening this Saturday.
Edward Dempsey of the Dempsey Grocery reports that seven sugar ration stamps that he sent in for November sales have been rejected by the OPA. There have been some other cases in Marcus recently in which the “counterfeiting” was discovered before the stamps were sent in.
Mr. & Mrs. Harry Henderickson received a welcome telegram on December 24 from their son, Pvt. Derald Henderickson, saying he had arrived safely in Korea and was signed as a company clerk.
70 Years Ago – 1952
The sale of the Marcus Gamble Store to Carl Boots of Aurelia was announced this week. The store has been operated by Jens Haahr for the past three years, he having purchased it from his brother, Earnest.
The 1950 Lincoln automobile belonging to John Barry received about $350.00 damage New Year’s Eve when it upset about two miles west of Marcus Mr. Barry’s son, Dick was returning from Remsen, taking the gravel road because of icy road conditions. Coming to the dead end near the railroad crossing he was unable to make the corner and the car went into the ditch and nosed over.
65 Years Ago – 1957
Howard “Bud” Wallin of Marcus will sell his household goods and modern home in Marcus at auction this Saturday, January 5. Mr. Wallin recently disposed of his business, the Wallin Mfg. Co., and the family plans to move to Long Beach, CA.
Mr. &. Mrs Harry Neir were honored on their 61st wedding anniversary Sunday evening when their children and families were present for a social evening.
Holy Name’s basket ball team pleased a big crowd of homecomers at that school’s annual celebration here Friday night by beating Quimby’s well-thought-of team quite handily. Spieler was a standout for Holy Name, scoring 22 points. Frangenberg chipped in with 12, Gary McClintock 11, Meyer 10 and Clarkson and Bird continued 4 points each.
60 Years Ago – 1962
A daughter, Janice Marie was born to Mr. & Mrs. James Smith Friday, December 1961 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
Three members of the Marcus Community High School band have been honored by being selected as members of the Northwest IowaBand. They are Lynn Gross, Nancy Boyd and Gail McQueen.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Reinholdt of Pierson are the parents of a son born Sunday, December 31, 1961 at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars. He has been named Brian Lee.
A Sudden fire of undermined origin did several thousand dollars worth of damage to the Elmer Goodburn farm home and its contents last Saturday afternoon.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Kathy Sand, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Merle Sand, has graduated from the institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. She has accepted a position in Orange City.
Mr. & Mrs. Howard Juhl were honored Sunday evening when fifty relatives and friends gathered at the Faith Lutheran Church parlors to honor them on their 25th wedding anniversary.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Mrs. John Clarkson returned home Thursday after four days of test at St. Joseph’s hospital in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Lyle Birch of Cleghorn were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary at an open house held in the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church and hosted by their children.
45 Years Ago – 1977
Tom Dorr of Marcus was recently elected to the Iowa Corn Growers Association Board of Directors at the group’s annual convention held in Des Moines.
Alisha Marquis, granddaughter of Dorotha Marquis, will be marching in the Rose Bowl
Dale Wood of Woody’s Lounge announces the sale of his establishment to his son, Mark wood of Marcus, and Tim Galles of Remsen.
40 Years Ago – 1982
John Wibe has joined Loyal Martin of Cherokee in lowa practice. The partnership is Martin and Wibe and the office is located at 107 South Second Street in Cherokee.
Mrs. Will (Elsie) Berger, 84, passed away on Thursday in the Community Memorial Hospital at Hartley where she had been hospitalized several months due to a lingering illness.
Cherokee County farmland declined in value during the past to an average of $2280 per acre, according to an Iowa State University study.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Retired Master Sgt. James D. Brown, 55, of San Antonio, TX formerly of Washta, died Friday in Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio of an apparent heart attack.
Sister Mary Donard B.V.M. arrived on Friday from Des Moines to spend a few days with relatives.
Michael and Lori Nilles of Ames were Sunday visitors in the E.V. Delaney home.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Parade in the Air Force Academy High School Band.
The Marcus Community Center will be sponsoring a New Year’s Eve Dance on December 31, Admission will be $5 per person. Music will be provided by Steve and Linda Smith.
The Marcus Café will be open on January 6, under the new owners Glenda and Dawn Updike. Monday – Saturday they will feature noon. The new establishment will be known as Mom’s Kitchen.
25 Years Ago – 1997
The Marcus Jaycees have flooded an ice skating rink on the north side of the swimming pool.
William Petersen, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa and formerly of Cleghorn area, passed away at SVMH of a heart attack.
Kay DeBoer was the First place winner of the Jaycees Christmas Lighting Contest.
20 Years Ago – 2002
A ribbon cutting will be held on January 3 at Gina’s Nailz’n more located at Sophisticuts.
Velrene Swanger entertained her family members at a pre-Christmas dinner in her home on Sunday.
Neal Schreier is pictured in the MMC Insider with his 1994 Red Z71 Chevy truck. Since he bought the truck he has added new suspension, tires, rims, graphics, dash kit, CD player and has dueled out the truck.
