Staff Spotlight
This week’s Staff Spotlight is Mrs. Sarah Bottjen. She teaches Junior English, Composition, Literature, Shakespeare, Modern Literature, and Society in Literature. She teaches at the high school in Marcus. This is her 10th year of teaching. Mrs. Bottjen grew up in Burke, South Dakota and attended the University of South Dakota for a degree in English Education. She wanted to be a teacher because she grew up watching her mom teach and change lives. Then she had a middle school teacher that changed her life. That teacher not only cared about how she wrote a sentence, but also about who she was as a person. That teacher made her love reading and writing, but more than that she showed her the power that teachers have. When asked about the reason she likes teaching, she said “It sounds cliche, but I love my entire job. They say to love your job and you’ll never work a day in your life, and I truly believe that I do this. The kids that I get to teach and be inspired by make each day something new and exciting. There is never a dull moment in my classroom and I love that!” Advice that she would give her students is “Don’t hurry through your four years. You will never have another day, or year to relive. Being an adult is not all it is cracked up to be. Do all the things. Soak up your moments.” Some advice that she wished that someone had given her while she was still in high school was “Learning is not always about getting the’’A. You are on your own learning journey. You have the ability to be successful, even if you do not have perfect scores.”
