105 Years Ago – 1916
Miss Hilda Kirchoff, a former resident of this vicinity, was married on November 14, to Carl F. Gates, in Orange, California, the home of the future bride.
John Ohlendorf has rented Henry McQueen’s dwelling property in the south part of town, which Mr. McQueen fitted up this summer into a desirable residence. For his disposition to help the town by converting old residences into new dwellings and by building parks, Mr. McQueen is entitled to be called public-spirited citizen. Mr. Ohlendorf will move to town the first of the year.

Please remember that if you leave it o the car during the winter time with the car not continually in use, it is liable to damage, and it will be far better if you have it examined at this time by a competent Battery man to make sure that it is in good condition to with-stand the winter service.
95 Years Ago – 1926
G.A. Brink has sold his undertaking equipment and business to R.P. Williams who opened a furniture store in Marcus a year ago. Immediate possession was granted to move all equipment to the first floor of the Williams Furniture store which will be used as a chapel and stock room.
Dr. M.F.Joynt attended the Army-Navy football game. He departed Friday night and returned Sunday morning.
Mr. & . Mrs. Frank McClintock of Marcus are the parents of a son born November 23.
Mr. & Mrs. Will Ament are the parents of a daughter born November 24
90 Years Ago – 1931
The Junior class of Marcus High School presents “Step On It Stan” Friday, December 4 at the High School Auditorium. Admission 10¢, 25¢ or 35¢.
Miss Maggie Irwin had the misfortune to step on a nail on Friday and is suffering with a very sore foot.
85 Years Ago -1936
The Marcus Panatoruim was moved recently to the store building occupied by the Fairmont cream station, across the street from the former location. The building vacated by the Panatorium has been leased by the Dorr Hatcher, and will install new equipment in the near future.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mr. Hills Carris has announced that he is taking over the Texaco station which was previously operated by Richard Kenney. The new business swill be operated under the new name of the Carris Auto Service. It will handle the Texaco products, and in addition will do washing and greasing and other car services.
H.H. Niemann, 86, of Marcus died in his home on November 28. Survivors are his wife Catherine and three children Loretta, Helen and Ray. In 1885 Mr. Niemann came to Marcus and purchased the jewelry business form Theodore Rolling and located in the building now occupied by the Treinen’s Market. Mr. Niemann had been in the jewelry business for fifty three years.
John Henry Benson, of Marcus has passed his final physical and mental examination and accepted into the U.S. Navy.
75 Years Ago -1946
Hollywood’s favorite funny men Bud Abbott and Lou Casstello come to the Lynic Theater Sunday for four days in The Time of Their Lives, a comedy innovation said to be packed with new ideas of how to make people laugh.
The Satterlee Drug team of Marcus took top honors in team bowling in the annual women’s tournament which was finished at Rex’s Alleys last weekend. They bowled 2648
Kenneth McQueen, tackle of the Marcus High school football team, was named on the second all northwest Iowa team.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Clarence Keffeler of Remsen purchased the John Thiel estate 160 acres farm, five miles west of Marcus on Highway 5, last Thursday afternoon at auction at $450.00 per acre.
Wells Dairy is introducing the New “Flip-top” square paper milk bottle.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Cline are the proud parents of an eight pound four ounce son born on Monday night, December 3. The new arrival has been named Stephen John and has one brother.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Ray Walsh, Veteran Marcus rural route carrier, made his last trip around his route Friday, November 30. He retired after 36 years of duty.
Wedding vows were exchanged by Gloria Bindner , daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Bindner of Marcus and Maurice Wilte, son of Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Wilte of Danbury, Saturday morning, November 24.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Lauters announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Audrey to Tony Delperdang, son of Mr. &Mrs. George Delperdang of Remsen.
Marian Rickert will be guest of honor at a “Silver bells” party Wednesday evening December 19.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. & Mrs. David Enneking of Cherokee are the proud parents of their first child, a daughter, born Saturday, November 18. She has been named Elizabeth Ann.
Mrs. Edna Freking returned to her home in Hospers Friday after spending a week in the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meyer.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Heesch and Don attended the wedding Friday evening at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen of Sharon Heesch and Arnold Maas.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Connie Ohlendorf , a graduate of Stewarts School of Hair Styling, has accepted a position as beauty operator at Betty’s Beauty Bar.
Mr. & Mrs. Ray Hanson and Shelly of Cherokee were Sunday evening callers in the Paul Wankun home.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Letsche of rural Marcus announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Jo, to James Lickiss, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Lickiss of Larrabee. A late January wedding is planned
50 Years Ago – 1971
Ric Collins, a 1969 graduate of Marcus, has just completed his first season as a member of the Westmar College Cross Country team.
Mr. & Mrs. Jack Clarkson & family were lunch guests Thanksgiving afternoon in the Jerry Letsche home.
The following comments were made by students about the first snow of the year: Janet Means; It took me an hour to drive ten blocks; Karen Husman: I suppose it’s alright!
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. & Mrs. Jay Dixson of Cedar Falls were weekend guests of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Specht.
Mr. & Mrs. Paul Rassel, Mr. & Mrs. Carl Mayer & Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Downs were Tuesday evening guests in the Fritz Wurth home to celebrate Fritz and Paul’s birthdays.
Mr. & Mrs. Claude Grey, Mr. & Mrs. Roger Nelson, Bobbi & Sam were Thanksgiving dinner guests in the Brian Nelson home.
40 Years Ago – 1981
The second annual Christmas Carolfest is to be held on Sunday evening December 13
Joseph John Bird, son of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird and Ronald Seggerman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Seggerman of Marcus were among 22 students selected to be listed among the 1981-82 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Jim Hoefling is up and about after suffering a broken arm when he fell from a stepladder at the home farm. Jim states it’s the first bone he’s ever broken.
Tom Rupp, was named honorable mention quarterback in his conference for the second straight year after having placed in the top five in the nation in the junior college ranks both times.
Mrs. Lawrence Bass was a dinner guest at the Dale Carver home at Storm Lake on Saturday. The occasion was in honor of Kay Powell’s birthday.
Joe and Agnes Schilmoeller are celebrating their 62nd Wedding Anniversary.
30 Years Ago – 1991
The area was hit last week with the worst storm in 50 years according to remarks from a few oldtimers like Jim Alesch, Gorden Roese and Marv Simons. Many rural areas were still without power a week later. Keith Hauschildt and Mark Bauer, who have been at it since the storm started inform us that repair crews from all surrounding states and even one from Texas have been on the repairing end of it and most will continue until full service is restored.
Due to the storm Saturday and no electricity, Mr. & Mrs. Bill Ament were guests of Mr. & Mrs. Ron Henke and family for the noon and brought them home afterwards.

25 Years Ago – 1996
Steve and Rachel Holmes of Marcus, IA are the parents of a son, Connor Charles Holmes, born November 28, 1996 at Floyd Valley Hospital, LeMars, IA. Grandparents are Karen Holmes, John and Rosemary Wibe, all of Marcus.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Marcus Chamber had a ribbon cutting at Total E’Clips owned by Dawn Roberts.
Coach Steve Utesch was recognized for being the first wrestling coach in MMC history to win 100 dual wins.
Mrs. Jane Boothby was welcomed back to school after being gone since October 19. She had been gone due to broken bones in her back and leg when she fell off a ladder.
