105 Years Ago – 1916
On November 28 there will be a public auction held at the Chester R Hobbs Property . Mr. Hobbs has decided to quit farming. The farm is located 1 1/2 miles west and 1 1/2 miles south of Marcus. Auction starts at 12 o’clock.
Mr. and Mrs. James Rae are the parents of new baby girl.
Mrs. M.F. Joynt entertained a number of friends of Dr. Joynt a six course dinner, the occasion being his birthday.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Unidentified robbers of the experienced type broke into the J.S. Robinson and Son store Sunday night and carried away merchandise valued at $1,000. Entrance was made through a basement window, and the loot was carried away in a truck. They selected only leather coats and sheep lined coats and other winter clothing.
Ruby Rae Allen, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Rae Allen of Grand Meadow township, born October 3, 1926.
W.H. Carmody announces that after December 1, all who are not customers will be required to pay 11 cents for each quart of milk.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Mrs. Ed Nitzschke had the misfortune of stepping on a nail Tuesday evening. She was unable to step on her foot for several days.
Roy Nield plans to operate a lunch room and sandwich shop in the part of the Nield building, formerly occupied by the Marcus Lunch Room.
A Franklin Junior automobile will be given by Kuhl’s Market to the boy or girl holding the largest number of votes, Christmas Eve. Candidates are urged to enter their names early and they may solicit votes from any purchaser. Votes are given with sales of 25¢ and over. Additional votes are offered for paying up back accounts.
85 Years Ago -1936
Claus Schroeder, farming on the Fred Grauer place south of Marcus will hold a closing out sale December 3. He lists 6 horses, 19 head of cattle, 21 pigs, 200 Legion pullets, farm machinery and some household goods. The Schroeder’s plan to live in Marcus.
Mrs. Henry Goodburn arrived home Thursday after a three week visit at Fort Dodge.
Fire Chief, Kenneth Bancroft has urged residents not to remove equipment used by the fire department from the firehouse or the fire trucks. Anyone wishing to use a hydrant wrench may obtain the same at Bancroft’s Market.
80 Years Ago – 1941
It was seventy years ago Thanksgiving day, November 27, that land was surveyed, planted and laid our for the town of Marcus.
Miss Joyce Addy, a student at AIB, in Des Moines, was honored on Tuesday, November 11 when she was pledged to Alpha Chapter of Alpha Iota, International Business Sorority. Miss Addy is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bert Addy of Marcus and is a graduate of Marcus high school.
75 Years Ago -1946
Bonds for the new town will for Marcus and waterworks improvement plan will be offered for sale on next Monday.
James Mulvany, 79, passed away Tuesday morning in Sacred Heart hospital. He had been hospitalized a week. Mr. Mulvany had lived in the Marcus community for 45 years making his home on a farm north of town.
Vernon Grauer of Marcus has entered an Aberdeen-Angus steer in open class competition at the International Livestock Exposition to open in Chicago November 30.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The town of Marcus is busy this week making preparations to entertainment the people of this area at the big free pancake day Wednesday, December 5. The pancakes will be served at the American Legion building from ten in the morning until eight in the evening.
Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris returned home last week from Jacksonville, IL, where they had been caring for their grandchildren the past three weeks while their son and daughter-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Harold Norris, were attending a meeting of the American College of Surgeons at San Francisco, CA.

65 Years Ago – 1956
Mr. & Mrs. James Alesch announced the arrival of a daughter, Kim Ann. She weighed 6 lbs, 13 oz., and was born at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mrs. Barbara Pits and children left Thursday for their home in Paramount CA, after a three week visit in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Wallen and other relatives.
Mr. & Mrs. John Meyer and Mrs. Sarah Peters visited Sunday afternoon in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Swindle in Cherokee.
60 Years Ago – 1961
M C basketball teams won both games from Greenville-Rossie Tuesday evening. The boys won 35 to 31 and Girls won 38 to 17.

55 Years Ago – 1966
Mike Hover had the cast removed from his broken leg last week. He will return to St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City each week for therapy. He is now on crutches.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Lawrence Brady farm last Friday. The alarm was caused by a furnace motor burning out, emitting a lot of smoke, but no damage resulted.
Gary L. Fischer received his Second Lieutenant bars at the Armory at Ames Saturday morning. He was one of eight who were pinned at a private ceremony. Mrs. Herman Fischer was given the honor of pinning her son.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Some lucky Marcus youth is going to become the owner of a new Toyota, a gift of Leonard Collins of Marcus. Leonard recently retired from the U.S. Navy, and simply wants to give something to the young people, with no strings attached.
A large group of neighbors gathered at Charles Rassel farm Monday morning with their tractors and equipment to harvest his corn. Chuck returned home Sunday follow hospitalization from injuries from a truck accident.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Drefke were visitors Sunday afternoon in the Floyd Grauer home.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Pallesen attended the graduation of their son, Terry, in Ames on Saturday, November 20. He received a B.S. degree in Zoology.
Mr. & Mrs. Alex Nenoras and daughter Sheri Marie welcome a baby boy, Alex Anthony, born November 16, 1976 and weighing in a 7 lbs. 2 1/2 oz.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Saturday night a packed house was greatly entertained by the Marcus High School production of Meridith Wilson’s “Music Man” under the direction of Ms. Liz Swanson. Iowa pride and spirit filled the stage and sent the audience home humming Wilson’s delightful melodies.
Margaret Seggerman and Douglas Rohwer were united in marriage on October 9th at the Holy Name Catholic Church, Monsignor Riegmann performed the ceremony.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Gloria Geedes and Janelle Horstman have put together some of Janelle’s handmade items in preparation for the Grand Opening of the remodeled craft department at Nagle’s.

Cory Bauer is home, recovering rapidly, and doing just great following open heart surgery at the Omaha Children’s Hospital. The surgery necessitated removal of subaortic membrane from his heart.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Jade Irwin, a 6 foot 1 inch, 190 pound senior at MMC, was the only Eagle to be named to the 1A District 2 football team.
Jim and Steve Smith Insurance Agency has recently been recognized by Rain and Hall LLC of West Des Moines for their outstanding achievements in providing crop insurance to area farmers.
