105 Years Ago – 1916
Work is to begin April 1 on the Marcus’ New Depot. The new station will cost $7,000.
George Hoxsie and raise the house of William Gibson, south of Marcus. Mr Gibson made extensive improvements to the residence. Phillip Schmidt had the contract for the cement work.
The Sjostrom Brothers paid 12¢ for Hens and 12¢ for Springs with delivery for 3 day in November.
The Boyd B Trousdale players opened a three night engagement at the Marcus Opera House it will be a four act comedy drama “Beyond the Law.” Prices are within reach of all, 25¢ for any seat in the house.
95 Years Ago – 1926
The Chicken Supper and Bazaar of the Mt. Pleasant Ladies will be held November 19 in the church. Roasted Chicken, dressing mashed potatoes, gravy, baked beans, cabbage salad, cranberries, pickles, jelly, rolls, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and coffee will be served.
The first edition of the Holy Name “School Static” was published by Editor-in-chief Florence Delaney, Editors, Dorothy Treinen, Ray Delaney, Russell Anderson and Roy Sand.
Mrs. Alice French returned home after a visit to her son Dr. Merle R French in Toledo.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The Marcus Fire Department issued an invitation to all Marcus residents to come down and check out the demonstration of the modern fire-fighting apparatus.
Farmers Elevator Co. of Marcus has purchased a large feed mixer, which thoroughly mixes feeds of all kinds. They are prepared to sell feed in hundred lots or ton lots.
Why pay more. At Sjostrom Brothers Inc. gas is 10 1/2¢ plus tax.
Ray and Jay Peters of Peters Bros. Motor Co. were the first owners of a radio receiving set in Marcus.
85 Years Ago -1936
J.P. Beck Store is now under new management. Leonard Petersen has taken the place of Mark Kuehn who has resigned and has taken position at the post office department in Minneapolis.
The Marcus Public School Fifth Grade welcomes a new classmate Dwayne Kelly. There are now thirty one pupils in their class.
Mrs. Claude Grey left Saturday for Clinton, Iowa where she is spending two weeks with her sister, Mrs. Lynda Rienke.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Joyce Ducommun who is attending N.B.T. in Sioux City spent the weekend in the home of her parents Mr. & Mrs. Ed Ducommun.
Mr. & Mrs. A. G. Slaghter of Long Beach are the proud parents of a son born October 19, weighing 8 pounds 8 oz and is the first great-grand child of Charles Woodall.
Betty and Bobby Seggerman turned 17 years old on November 6. In honor of the occasion Mr. and Mrs. John Ott and family of Remsen were included among relatives in the Seggerman home.
75 Years Ago -1946
Hans Rohlfesen who came to a farm north of Marcus in 1877, celebrated his 100th birthday at his home with his daughter Mrs. Louise Tangemand.
Pfc. Leonard Harms of Marcus received his honorable discharge from Ft. Sheridan, Il, October 26 after serving a year in the Pacific theatre with nineteen months of duty in the armed forces. He served with the 311th Medical battalion.
The unexpected and heavy fall of snow over the middle west caught the major portion of the corn crop still in the field. It is estimated that only 10% of the corn has been picked .
70 Years Ago – 1951
Donna Hoxsie has taken over the management of Bonnie’s Beauty Solon. The beauty shop was located in the McGivern building and has been operated by Mrs. Percy Means.
There will be an Open House of two new homes that have been completed by Carl E. Klingborg on Highway 143 in Marcus on November 18.
Lyric Theatre will be showing “Alice In Wonderland” Friday and Saturday night.
Henry Zembsch, Marcus rural route carrier, made his last trip Wednesday, retiring after 44 years of service.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Progress is being made on the plans for the new community swimming pool. The town council members have visited many towns having pools.
Construction has started on the Sand Seed Service elevator that is under construction on the east side of the plant to allow trucks to unload directly into the plant or railroad cars.
Steve Smith one of the youngest members of the cast “With a Merry Heart” was pictured at 5 years as the most applauded member. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. James Smith.
60 Years Ago – 1961
“Santa Claus,” a major land mark in the film world, will be shown at the Marland theatre Saturday and Sunday matinees only this week. Show starts at 2:30.
The Marcus Community School will hold an open house in observance of American Education week.
Several ladies were present Wednesday afternoon, October 25 at the home of Miss
Loretta Garvin to honor her on her birthday.
Miss Patrica Geister and Charles Letsche of Marcus exchanged vows Saturday, October 21 at St. Joseph’s Church in Ellendale.
55 Years Ago – 1966
The Marcus Post of the American Legion is hosting a Bake Sale at the Legion Hall.
Kent Schmillen returned home Tuesday from the hospital in Sioux City where he underwent knee surgery last Wednesday.
MC marching band was among the many bands in Sioux City and were honored to be next in line to Vice President Hubert Humphery in the parade which was on TV Saturday.
50 Years Ago – 1971
The former Marcus Cafe is now open and ready for business, the new owner is Sandi Bohnenkamp.
The Marcus Grand Spinners will do-si-do to the calls of Dick Reisinger on November 2 at the Holy Name Gym.
Teresa Kaufman, student of Black Hill State College at Spearfish, SD spent the holiday weekend in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Kauffman.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Thomson of Cleghorn will be honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on November 11.
Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Miller visited their son, Eugene, in Madison Wisconsin, over the weekend to attend the Iowa-Wisconsin football game.
M-C School is offering four or five freezers which are no longer needed in the two schools due to the purchase of an outdoor walk-in freezer.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Paul Rassel and Rob Schlenger of Marcus had their live flashed in front of them when they where driving there semi truck and were struck on the driver side by another vehicle.
Mr. & Mrs. Brian Jenness are the parents of a daughter. Kimberly Nicole born October 18 at Floyd Valley Hospital. She weighted 7 lbs. 9 oz.
Diane Kitterman of Minneapolis is spending five days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Bob Seggerman
35 Years Ago – 1986
Margaret Willems and Ruth Backaus will have their annual holiday craft show at the IPS building November 14-15.
Dave Alesch of Sand Seed Service, recently attended a feeding and management school.
The Grand Opening for the Marcus Pizza Ranch will be November 20-22. There are specials every day and will be a drawing for a Grand Prize.
30 Years Ago – 1991
MMC students to the 1991 All-State Band and Orchestra are Amy Cowen, Cathy Anderson, Chad Miller and Kenny Drekfe.
Jerry Martin reports 29 girls out for basketball, with six starters returning.
Coach Horsley reports 25 boys out for basketball, with four starters returning.
Chuck and Betty Knudson traveled to Columbus Ohio for the Ohio-Iowa Game.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Dave Erickson will present a junior trombone recital November 17 in Colton Recital Hall of Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts. Dave is a student at the University of South Dakota.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Marcus Chamber held a Ribbon Cutting at Roder Gas and Oil Company on November 9.
Bob Carey returned to his home in Marion after visiting several days in the home of his mother, Lucille Carey.
Cecil Pottebaum, 71, passed away in his home after a brief illness. Survivor’s include his wife Maxine and children.
