125 Years Ago – 1896
Our City Council met in regular session Monday evening with Mayor A. H. Dwight. Joseph Beck asked the council to move the jail from its present location to one away from residences. It was placed in motion and carried. They will move it to the right of way of the Rail Road Company and purchase a box car to use as a jail.
The Marcus Creamery will run all winter to encourage winter dairying which is most profitable.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Water froze here 1/2 inch or thicker Monday night and Tuesday was cold and unpleasant.
Miss Mabelle Glos and Ira C. Edmonds of Marcus were married in the Congregational Church at Wayne, IN Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. September 11. They will make their home in Marcus, IA.
School started here Monday with a fair attendance.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Cliff Knox departed for Iowa City to resume his third year studies to become an M. D. He spent the summer working with his dad in the lumber business in Marcus.
Margaret A.Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams of Tilden Twp., was married to Arthur Brownmiller. They will be at home on a farm in Rock Twp. after October 1.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Marcus Public School opened with 25 freshman, 19 girls and 6 boys. Ten of the Junior girls are in the Normal Class making 19 in all. A number of the freshman girls are taking German.
Basket ball practice began Thursday evening. A new ball and new shoes were ordered.
There are 29 pupils in the Primary Room, 23 in the 3rd and 4th with 15 of them boys.
Mrs. I. M. Jackson writes in her memories of 1874 in Marcus of the grasshopper invasion the latter part of July that stripped everything.
95 Years Ago – 1926
George Pierce of Cleghorn purchased the H. E. Love farm near Cleghorn and will move onto it in the Spring.
Seven thousand people attended the Grand Meadow Plowing Match held at Cooper’s Grove, six miles west of Washta.
Miss Esther Anderson of Marcus and William Pitts of Cherokee were married Tuesday, Sept. 14 in Maryhill Visitation Church with Father Veit officiating. They will make their home in Cherokee.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Movies showing in the local Lyric include “Gun Smoke” with Richard Arlen, “The Girl Habit” with Charles Ruggles and Sue Conroy and “ The Magnificent Lie” with Ruth Chatterton and Ralph Bellamy.
Barbara Ann Farrell is moving to Shenandoah and Grace Roberts joined the 7th grade class this week.
Francis Smith of Cleghorn fell and broke his arm last week. It is improving as of this writing.
85 Years Ago -1936
Howard Holmes departed for Des Moines and on to San Diego, CA where he will enter the Naval Training Center.
There are 10 seniors and 11 juniors taking the Normal Course at Marcus High School.
The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Tentinger, Esther, of Cleghorn fell at school and broke several bones in her foot. She is unable to attend school for a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton of Marcus are the parents of an 8 lb.1 oz. son, named Bradley Kent, born Thursday, Sept. 10. Mother and son are doing fine.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Lois Addy, instructor at Crescent Park School in Sioux City, spent the weekend in the parental Stanley Addy home.
Vernon Hueser, Bud Wheeler and Howard McConnell spent Saturday at the Spencer Fair.
Michael Francis Clarkson, a member of the National Guard, is visiting in the parental Walter Clarkson home. Michael is stationed at Camp Luis Obispa, CA.
Cherokee County has over 244 men in the sevice of the United States.
75 Years Ago -1946
Helen Alesch of Marcus, bride-elect of Ervin Herrig of Alton, was honored at a bridal shower in Holy Name Hall, hosted by friends and relatives.
Frank Norris returned to his studies at the University of St. Louis, Paul returned to the University of Pennsylvania and Patricia to the University of Iowa. All are the children of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Garvin hosted a 7th birthday party for their daughter, Mary, Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12. Eight classmates and friends were presnt for games and a delicious lunch.
Ronald Reagan and Diana Lynn star in “Bedtime for Bonzo” showing in the Lyric.
Mrs. M. F. Joynt returned home September 5th after spending 5 weeks with her sister, Miss Clara Luken, in Washington, DC.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Mr. and Mrs. L.J. McGivern of Marcus amd Mr. and Mrs. F.T. McGill of Rock Valley departed on a European trip that will last several weeks.
The U.S. Fish and Wild Life Service offers buffalo, long horn cattle, elk and mule deer for sale to prevent over grazing on Federal refuges.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill McDaniel and family departed for Ames Tuesday where he is a student at Iowa State College.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Hurricane Carla claimed the lives of former Marcus residents. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Dunn and four of their five children, of Angleton, TX. Robert, 15, is the lone survivor. Both Wallace and his wife, nee Virginia Richards, were former Marcus residents Virginia’s sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Drvar and three stepsons, who had come to the Dunn home to weather the storm also lost their lives.
Marcus contractor, Howard Petersen, and local helpers are paving 2 blocks of Railroad Street. They built their own forms and are using ready mix concrete.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Marcus Eag;es won their opening football game of the season over the Remsen-Union Rockets 27-12. Gary Sanow gained 114 yards for the Eagles.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoover and Jim have returned to Marcus to make their home due to the serious injuries their son Mike, received in a car-cycle accident. Mike has been hospitalized in Sioux City for several weeks and will be in a cast for several months.
The all new 1967 Camaro will go on display September 29.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Lonnie Wayne Bentz was born to Paul and Glenda Bentz Thursday, Sept. 9th. He weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz .and has a brother and sister at home.
The total enrollment at Marcus Community School is 751 with 256 in high school. The junior high numbers are up 29 students as those grades at Holy Name were closed.
Tryouts for the musical “Plenty of Money” were held August 30 and 31. It will be given November 12 and will be directed by Miss McLain.
45 Years Ago – 1976
The Cleghorn post office moved from its location of nearly 60 years to the north end of Main Street.
Gay Lynn Erickson and Craig Strub were married Saturday, August 7 in the Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City. After a wedding trip to Missouri, they will be at home on a farm near Marcus.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Delbert and Myrtle Drefke will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary Sunday, September 27 with an open house hosted by their chidren Patty and Elmer Bergeman and Don and Jan Drefke. It will be held in the Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus.
Former Marcusite, Rosemary Whealon, and Brian Brinig of San Diego, CA are planning a November 7th wedding in San Diego.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Alan and Geralyn Hoefling are the parents of their first child, a 7 lb. 15 oz. daughter, named Allison Theresa, born Wednesday, Sept.10.
Jeri Simonsen of Quimby and Dean Petersen of Cleghorn are planning their wedding for May 30, 1987.
Supt. Leland Anderson reports that there are 239 students enrolled in Meriden-Cleghorn this year, with 96 enrolled from 7th grade through 12th.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Scott and Sandy Goth Henke are the parents of a 7 lb. 11 3/4 oz daughter, named Carissa Sue, born Sept. 16.
Jodi L. Mc Dermand and Gentry J. Berger are planning an October 6th wedding. Both are employed by the South Dakota Department of Game. Fish and Parks.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The Marcus Quasquicentennial Committee donated $5000 to the Marcus Public Library, $5000 to the Marcus Fair Association and $5000 to the Marcus Community Center and $2000, with the Jaycees, for a sun awning at the Marcus swimming pool
James A. Sanow, 46, of Marcus passed away Thursday, September 12 after a ninr month fight with cancer. Services were held in Marcus Holy NAme Church witj burial in the church cemetery.
