125 Years Ago – 1896
P.B. Nelson is remodeling his office in the implement building and it will be converted into a barber shop for Earl Wixcel. Marcus will have 4 barber shops. Earl and his family have returned to Marcus.
A cow, belonging to William Naffziger of Marcus gave birth to a freak calf. The head and mouth resembled a bull dog. It was dead when born.
110 Years Ago – 1901
There has been some new evidence in the Schultz murder case and some relatives may be involved.
John Bird has moved into his new buildng and is ready for business.
E.J. Edmond and Co. made a deal last week whereby they became owners of the fine half section of land just south of Marcus known as the George W. Newcomb place.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Someone threw a rock through a $70 plate glass window in the Thomas Delaney store.
Mrs. Mich and Mrs, Nelson have dissolved partnership in the millinery business.
105 Years Ago – 1916
L.A. Rowlet sold his 160 acre farm in Marcus Twp. to Pat Brady for $200 per acre. Pat will take possession March 1st.
Miss Madge Barnes began her very first day of school in the Primary Department.
Lou McDaniel bought the George Alberty residence property in east Marcus for $2300 and will take possesson next month.
95 Years Ago – 1926
August Marcus birth records show Melvin Ewald Carlson born July 3; Helen Darlene Means born July 25 and Kenneth Lyle Pallesen born July 25.
Miss Ruth Wixcel, who teaches at Tilden #9 spent the weekend in Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mossman visited their son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Duane Mossman at Burlington, IA. They called on reatives at Center Point and spent a few days at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
90 Years Ago – 1931
The reo fire truck for Marcus is assured as the necessary funds were secured from farmers and land owners.
O.J. Strampe of Paullina has been named cashier of Marcus Farmers State Bank. He and his wife and daughter, Norma, will move here as soon as they find a house.
85 Years Ago -1936
Many businessees in Remsen, lost in the July 4 th fire are rebuilding. Several will reopen at a new location.
Miss Florence Roethler will be the Marcus News Correspondent, replacing Mrs. R.A. Turpin, who moved to Cherokee.
Miss Myrtle Harnack of LeMars and Delbert Drefke of Cherokee were married Monday morning. After a trip to Casper,Wy they will be at home in Cherokee where he is employed.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Mark Scobell has taken over the Novar Ballroom in Marcus lock. stock and barrel. He plans to make the Marcus ballroom an attraction for miles around. The Paul Moorhead Band will open the season on Sunday, September 28th. Dances will be held on Tuesday and Sunday evenings. Mark expects to move his family to Marcus in the near future.
Lyle Hinspeter and Herman Ritters, both farmers in the Marcus area have been included in the Call 19 of the Draft Board.
Marcus Supt. Harold Wood has been named President of the Cherokee County Superintendent’s Club.
Marcus Public School has an enrollment of 155 in the grades and 149 in high school. The Senior Class has 48 students.
75 Years Ago -1946
Leo Alesch sold 20 acres with the improvements on it to W.W. Bass for $13,000 or $650 per acre. Leo had recently purchased the land for $300 per acre, just west of Marcus.
Marcus voters rejected the purchase of the land south of the local playground for a permanent athletic field. The local Commercial Club will discuss buying it for the annual Industrial and Livestock Show.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Arnold “Bing” Miller and Dan Mc Leod, both of Germantown have leased the Seeger building and will open a dairy lunch room with Mrs. Fred Zangger as manager. It will be called The Malt Shop.
A price support of $2.45 per bushel has been announced for the 1951 crop of soybeans in cherokee County.
65 Years Ago – 1956
Mrs. Alice Gertrude Paine, 82, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11. Services will be held in Nelson Funeral home with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Her sister is her one survivor.
The Old Home Special will be in Marcus Saturday morning and afternoon giving free rides to the youngsters. Marcus merchants are offering many specials that day.
60 Years Ago – 1961
At least 64 young people of Marcus are enrolled in colleges. Twenty-one of the spring graduates are among that number.
Cynthia Rae Harris of Sioux Falls, SD and Mark G. Rupp of Marcus are planning a winter wedding. Both are employed in Omaha.
Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Heinis accompanied Mr. and Mrs. John Dawson on a trip to Marysville, WA where they will visit with the Orville Smith and Lyle Heinis families. They will spend two weeks there.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Weber are the parents of an 8 pound son, born Tuesday, August 30. He is named Kyle John and has 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Debbie Reynolds stars in “The Singing Nun” showing in the Marland. She plays the role of Sister Ann, a young Dominican nun with a God-given gift of music.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ott of Cleghorn are the parents of a 7lb. 4oz. son, born Friday, Sept. 2. He is named Kevin Richard.
Ralph Gibson and son, Kenny, attended the Yankees-Twins baseball game in Minneapolis Saturday.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Barbara Meehan and Debra Theisen, students at St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City began ten weeks of psychiatric training at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute.
Martin Crandell, band director at Marcus Community School, directed the Centennial Choir here, played in the Sioux City Municipal Band and played for the Midwest Governors’ Convention, during the summer vacation.
Nina Biezuns of Cleghorn is teaching sixth grade at Rock Valley, IA. She finished college at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
Joyce Peavey returned to Des Moines to begin her junior year in the School of Nursing at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Marcus Community High School has an enrollment of 257 students and a total of 640, down 43 from last year.
Mrs. Violet Woodall returned home after spending two weeks with Lt. Col. and Mrs. Virgil Wirt in Colorado Springs, CO. She mer her new great granson, David Paul Wirt, son of the Maurice Wirts.
Happenings at Marcus High School the first day: Randy Rupp and Ricky Waltman walked in late. Debbie Erdman arrived with a new hair-do and a new car.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Iowa, where tall corn grows! Garland and Kirby Hohbach are pictured holding a stalk that is 13 feet 5 inches in height.
Miss Baker, kindergarten teacher at Marcus Community School, took a trip to Mexico this summer and reviewed school material.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Rod Ebert defeated Greg Carver in a sudden death playoff for the Marcus Club Championship.
The Cherokee Board of Supervisors announced the appointment of George Engebretson to the Cherokee County Commission of Veteran Affairs, replacing Ray Gates who is retiring due to ill health.
Kyra Wilcox of Cleghorn and Craig Conley of Cherokee were married August 9th in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee. They will make their home in rural Cleghorn.
30 Years Ago – 1991
The newly organized Marcus Chamber has over 40 members who are trying to keep our community alive, growing and moving forward. Connie Schachterle is president, Cindy Stevenson, vice-pres. and Eric Nelson, secretary-treasurer.
Little Miss Lindsay Hammrich was selected Little Miss Marcus Fair with Celeste Ogren as runner-up.
Members of Rita Donaldson’s family treated her to a birthday dinner at Anthon Saturday evening.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Bonnie Means resumed donating her time at MMC Junior High in Cleghorn. She teaches boys and girls how to make a gym bag.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Former Marcusite, Brad Bird, now of Scottsdale, AZ and Allison Wesley of Scottsdale are planning a December 29th wedding in Carefree, AZ.
Margaret Treinen Willems was honored on her 90th birthday with family gatherings. Her son, Keith Hey, of East Lansing, MI spent a few days with her.
Tove Stentoft Skovdem Sweden is spending until July, 2002 with the John and Judy Heidesch family in Marcus as an exchange student. She comes from a city of 40,000 and hopes to become a lawyer.
