125 Years Ago – 1896
The city scales were removed from Main Street and the building will be moved to a lot south of Mr. Wixcel’s residence.
Some of the farmers hit by hail threshed their wheat and reported a yield of 2 bushels per acre. Others had yields of 12 to 15 bushels per acre.
110 Years Ago – 1901
William E. Springer, 25, was killed August 21 by a stroke of lightning.
The 13th annual Cherokee County Fair will be held in Marcus September 10, 11 and 12.
115 Years Ago – 1906
An old settler shares memories of January 1870: John Clarkson and he walked from Cherokee to Pomeroy, the end of the railroad track, to catch a train east. They were caught in a blizzard and spent 36 hours with a homesteader. He remembered when wolves played tag around the John Dorr home at night in Amherst Twp. He recalled Matthias Smith as the first settler in Amherst Twp.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Ruth Irene Gardner of Cherokee and Guy Ward Rae of Marcus were married Saturday, August 19 in the Gardner home in Cherokee. They will be at home on a farm near Marcus after October 1st.
There are 3,671 pupils enrolled in the Cherokee County schools at a cost of $5.11 per pupil per month.
The Collins’ Bros. Orchestra will play at the dance in the Marcus Opera House Wednesday, August 30. They will be at the Mitchell, SD Corn Palace September 25-30.
Excavation has begun on the J.P. Means residence northwest of the Marcus depot. It will be 24X32 with 7 rooms and a bath and a porch on the south and east side. It will be built of cement blocks.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Most of the threshing in Tilden and Grand Meadow area is done with yields reported of 20-45 bushels per acre.
Frank Sand is driving a Willys-Knight sedan purchased from the Overland Garage.
The Sina Bork families gathered at Riverside Park at Cherokee Sunday for a picnic to honor her birthday and the birthdays of her daughters, Mrs. Anton Andersen and Mrs. Robert Snapp and her son, Roy Bork.
90 Years Ago – 1931
School will egin Monday with Miss Marian Welch teaching the Tilden Center School this fall.
Friends surprised Ruth Simons Monday evening as they arrived at her home to help her celebrate her 18th birthday.
85 Years Ago -1936
A good rain of 3.7 inches of rain improved the feeding situation and plowing in this area.
The Colt and Calf Show and the Farm Bureau Picnic will be held Tuesday, September 8.
Vernace Kinzel of Cleghorn and Hillis Carris of Marcus were married Saturday evening, August 22 in the Church of Christ in Cleghorn. They will make their home in Marcus where he is employed in Grey’s Garage.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Over 5,000 attended the 5th annual Livestock Show in Marcus. Mother Nature gave us ideal weather. The exhibits were bigger and better and the future is bright.
Miss Eleanor Rasmussen and John Brady were married Monday, August 25 in Marcus Holy Name Church.
“Billy The Kid” starrng Robert Taylor is showing in the Lyric, with Brian Donlevy.
75 Years Ago -1946
Ray Muehl bought the Victor Blessing home just north of the Methodist Church here. They plan to move in by November first.
Ed Delaney celebrated his 15th anniversary as owner of the local Lyric Theatre.
A special election has been called by the board of the Marcus Public School to vote on buying 3.28 acres just south of the Marcus Playground, owned by J.C. Means for $1200. It woiuld be used as an athletic field.
Betty Jane Mai of Dubuque and Elmore Wallin of Marcus will be married Saturday. October 5th in the Marcus Methodist Church.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Holy Name School will open Monday, Sept. 3 with Father E.L. McEvoy as superintendent and nine sisters teaching.
Mayor A.J. Lenth warns drivers theat “stop” means stop and no warnings will be given. If you are caught you will pay a fine and it wll increase with further violations.
The Cleghorn P.T. A. wil hold its first meeting Tuesday evening September 4. Joann Weimer of Marcus and John Thompson of Cleghorn will sing a duet.
65 Years Ago – 1956
A total of 430 students registered at Marcus Public Schol with 125 in high school and 305 in the lower grades.
“Tall Man Riding” Starring Randolph Scott and Dorothy Malone is showing in the Marland.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mrs. H. E. Means and son, Percy, were called Tuesday to the University of Iowa Hospital due to the grave condition of their husband/father. Percy returned home and Mrs. Means remained with her husband.
Charles Knudson, president of the Marcus Commercial Club, reports that the development program for our city is in its second phase, to analyze our problems and potentials.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Odom attended the double wedding of Karen Lockwood and her sister, Joanne to Darrell Egger and Larry Krause at Calumet Saturday evening .
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mrs. Frank Peppersack of Marcus was the sweepstakes award winner of “Products made with lard” at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
Miss Mary Ellen Fenton (Molly) is now residing in the Marcus Manor at 707 East Pine Street.
Sp. 4 Ron Neir is spending a 30 day furlough in the parental Harley Neir home. He has been stationed at Seward, Alaska and will return to duty at Anchorage, Al.
50 Years Ago – 1971
The Marcus Community School will begin Monday, August 30. There are three new teachers on the faculty of 44. They are Jean Johnson, Homemaking, Linda McClain , high school music and Ed Smith-high school social studies and assist in football and wrestling coaching.
Former Marcusite, Dr. John Norris, is recovering from first and second degree burns on his face, legs and arms. He was burned in an explosion in his backyard at his Mankato, MN home.
Mrs. Mamie Wittrock and Ralph of Sioux Falls, SD and Mrs. Clarence Eldredge of Marcus returned home after a two weeks vacation and sight seeing in Montana.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Colleen Whealon of Marcus was named to the Dean’s list at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO for the summer quarter. She is doing her practice teaching at Sioux City North High School.
Mrs. Emery Goodrich accompanied Lucy Robinson and Virginia Robinson to Marcus Sunday to attend the 60th wedding anniversary party honoring Mr. and Mrs. Guy Rae.
Wilma Treinen was the sweepstakes winner in the baking division at the Marcus Fair.She had 10 entries and won 6 blue ribbons and 4 red.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Mark and Sara Wilcox of Cleghorn are the parents of their first child, a 7 pound girl, named Emily Anne, born July 18.
Julie Goodburn and Kevin Prunty will be married September 4 in St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cherokee.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Roy Nelson and Esther Grauer were selected King and Queen of the 50th annual Marcus Fair.
Rodney and Renee Ebert are the parents of a 7 pound 4 1/2 ounce girl born August 18 and named Jacquiline Marie. She has a brother, Eric, at home.
Doug Nelson of Meriden spent five weeks of summer vacation as a Volunteer with the Student Conservation Program. He was at the Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior in Michigan. He will be a senior this fall at Meriden-Cleghorn.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Marcus Public School Class of 1941 held their 50th year reunion in the L & J at Remsen. Nineteen classmates, eleven spouses and their Principal, John Pease, attended.
Lawrence and Clarinda Wurth of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, August 31 in Holy Name Hall with their children and families hosting it.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Kirby Hohbach and Juliann Zook are planning a September 28th wedding in Trinity Lutheran Church.
Marcus Chamber coffee was hosted by Barb Martin and her helpers, Erica Kunzweiler and Mallory Wankum. It was held in the Martin gazebo and over 40 people enjoyed it and visiting the Martin Playhouse.
Memories of the Marcus QQC linger on! So many former citizens returned and it was impossible to greet all of them. As Bob Reed wrote, “We can’t wait 25 years for another. How about another celebration to celebrate this one next year?
20 Years Ago – 2001
Jim and Lorraine Cave will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, September 1 with an open house in the Marcus Community Center. It will be hosted by their famiies.
The city of Marcus has a new water bill payment drop box at the city hall. It is on ground level outside the front entrance.
he Dollars for Scholars golf day was a success. It raised enough money to fund over 20 scholarships for MMC students to pursue further education.
