125 Years Ago – 1896
E.J. Edmonds purchased the stock scales and F.J. Collins bought the scales at the foot of Main street. Collins must remove his in 10 days but the other will remain where it stands.
Mr. and Mrs. William Wirt are the parents of a baby girl born last Thursday and all are doing well.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Men are excavating for the heating plant for the public school as the old stove was unsatisfactory.
Mrs. John French, about 61, of Amherst passed away leaving her husband, 5 sons and a daughter to mourn her loss. Burial was in the Marcus Cemetery.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Dan Collins sold a car of Great Western endless apron spreaders in 10 days and wired for another load. He has sold 3 car loads since April 1st.
Marcus enjoyed a good tennis tournament with Remsen and Storm Lake. Matches are scheduled with Quimby and Washta.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Henry Haase sold his 80 acre farm in Sheridan township to John Linderman for $212.50 per acre for a total of $17,000.
Mike Garvin returned to his Ramson, IL home after overseeing tiling work on his 160 acre farm in Amherst Twp. farmed by the Abels Bros.
Charles Treinen, a farmer northwest of Marcus was overcome by heat while threshing. He was unconscious and very ill.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Catherine Campbell, a cook in the Newcomer Cafe, and Peter Heinis were married August 18 in Cherokee. They will make their home in Marcus.
R. Arnold, a farmer near Marcus, lost 12 pigs due to eating the poisonous belladonna plant. It is a relative of the tomato plant.
About 25 relatives and friends gathered at the Charles Brown home to help his son, Ivan, celebrate his 17th birthday. They enjoyed lawn games and lunch.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Goodrich of Cleghorn and Mr. and Mrs. Bloodgood of Paullina departed Friday morning for Los Angeles to attend a mail carriers convention.
Thieves stole over 100 chickens from Mrs. Anton Klingberg Friday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Nield and Mrs. Fred Knox and Mary Jean are visiting Mrs. Nield’s sister, Mrs. Barbara Kelly and family at Ellensworth, KS.
The Marcus Fire Department has entered into an agreement with Iowa Manufacturers of fire fighting equipment to purchase a Reo fire engine. They must raise half of the $3,000 cost. The city council will pay $1500 and the town and country, the other $1500.
85 Years Ago -1936
Sherman Hoxsie, 42, WWI Veteran, passed away Tuesday, August 18 after a few weeks illness. The funeral was held Friday, August 21 in the Christian Church with burial in the Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 2 sons, his father and a sister.
Shirley Temple stars in “Poor Little Rich Girl” showing in the American Theatre in Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Willey and son departed for Kalispell, MT Tuesday. They intend to make their home in the west.
Miss Lila Tebbel, mucic teacher in Marcus Public Schol, is spending 2 weeks with her parents at Doland, SD.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Bernice Goodrich and Velma Swanson, who are employed in Sioux City, spent the weekend in their parental homes in Cleghorn.
Miss Shirley Hoke of Cleghorn and Reginald Graves of Corso, MO were married Sunday, August 17 in Hartington,NE.
Doris Woodall,14, was killed in an auto accident Tuesday afternoon, August 19th. She was riding in the back seat of their 1934 Chevrolet, driven by her mother.
Viola Collins, a 1941 graduate of Marcus Holy Name, is employed in Sioux City as a stenographer.
75 Years Ago -1946
Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Brownmiller are the parents of a 9 pound 2 1/2 ounce son born Thursday, August 15 and named James Cyril.
Dr. L.L. Norris bought the residence in which they have been living from Mrs. Ida McDonald..
Miss Lulu Dorr and Kendall Grauer were married Sunday afternoon, August 18 in Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus. After a wedding trip to the Black Hills, they will be at home on a farm south of Marcus.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Mrs. Harma Barnes will be honored on her 90th birthday Saturday, August 25 with an open house in the Lloyd Barnes home.
Sgt. Lavern Heesch arrived home Sunday night to spend a 30 day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heesch. Lavern just completed a years service with the U.S. Army in Korea.
Mrs. Maude Booth entertained Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Booth, Carole and Dick at a Sunday dinner and supper in honor of Mrs. Forrest Booth’s birthday.
Fred Astaire and Jane Powell star in “Royal Wedding” showing in the Lyric.
65 Years Ago -1956
Julie and Billy Brady, children of Mrs. John Brady, are visiting in the Mr. and Mrs. Dick Keffeler home for a few days.
Norma Lillian Strampe of Marcus and Warren Stanton were married Saturday, August 11 in Zion Lutheran Church at St. Louis, MO.
Mrs. Don Peters of Spencer was a weekend guest in the Mr. and Mrs. Ray Peters home. Her husband, Don, is spending five weeks in Hartford, CN attending a sales training course.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knudson are the parents of an 8 pound 15 ounce son,, born Thursday, August 17 and named Charles Michael. He has two sisters at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Emery Goodrich returned to their Cleghorn home after a ten day trip to Atlanta, GA, where they attended the National Convention of the Rural Mail Carriers. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Chamberlain of Mapleton accompanied them.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Tentinger of Norwalk, CA and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Petersen and Carol were Wednesday afternoon visitors in the Gladys and Lyda Williams home.
55 Years Ago – 1966
The senior Angus belonging to Bonnie Simons was name Grand Champion of the Marcus Fair’s Baby Beef show. Grant Mugge had the reserve champion.
There were 58 entries in the Youth Parade at the Marcus Fair with 95 children participating
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mayer and sons and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kuehn returned home from a several days fishing trip at Lake Irene near Carlos, MN.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Margaret Delaney of Marcus received greetings and well wishes from President Nixon and Senator Jack Miller for her 95th birthday. She is the oldest lady in Marcus.
Jean Pitts of Cleghorn and Donald Gaskill of Meriden are planning a September 4th wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. George Koth and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ament and Mr. and Mrs. Cy Delaney and Denny were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pallesen at a patio picnic Tuesday evening.
45 Years Ago – 1976
James A.Smith of Marcus was named Webster Life Agent of the Year at the Webster Life Insurance Company of Spirit Lake annual meeting and awards held at the Holiday Inn of Okoboji.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dorr are the parents of a 9 pound 7 ounce son, born August 4 and named Zachary Arron.

Don Alesch is pictured with his 32 pound lake trout caught at Great Bear Lake, near the Arctic Circle in Canada.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Martin “Abe” Spieler, 77, died August 14 after a brief illness. Sevices were held in Marcus Holy Name with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters, 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
Brian Nelson and Doug Dreckman are taking anti-rabies shots after being exposed to a feedlot heifer that was rabid. Five year old Christopher Wurth is taking the shots after being bitten by a cat.
YeVonne Shea of Marcus and William Loutsch of Remsen are planning an October 3 wedding.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Gwen Geerdes was named Little Miss Marcus with Nicole Simons as runner-up at the annual Marcus Fair.
Dave Davis is busy working on the mural on the Hogue Building that abuts the Downtown Mini-Park on Marcus Main Street. (Folks, it still looks good after 20 years, T.)
30 Years Ago – 1991
John H. Bindner is celebrating his 80th birthday Sunday, August 25th. Gee, John will celebrate his 95th this year, He is a resident of our lovely Marcus Heartland Care Center. His 90 year old wife, Elvira, makes her home in Marcus and is very active.
Mavis Diment of Marcus earned a Master of Library Science degree at Emporia State University this summer.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Armella Keffeler and Charles Addy were named QQC Royalty in Marcus. Julie Peters was named QQC Princess and Erica Kunzweiler was named Little Miss Marcus Fair.
Ray Wankum received the Best Overall in the Beard Contest for the QQC.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Carly Lehnhoff was named Little Miss Marcus Fair.
Joe and Flornie Weber will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, September 2 with a family dinner in the Marcus Club House.
