125 Years Ago – 1896
Mr. Simms of LeMars is in Marcus putting water works in the I. M. Jackson residence and doing other plumbing.
The wrangle over the city scale has grown to huge proportions. The city council voted to leave the city scales open for the benefit of grain and stock buyers until the scales are sold.
115 Years Ago – 1906
The Western Union Telegraph gang has been busy setting poles along the line and departed for Remsen to continue work.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Lightning struck the butcher shop in Cleghorn but not much damage was done. Thirty telephones were out of commission there.
James Rae bought the O.B. Fobes residence at auction for $2,825.
Harvesting of early oats will commence in Tilden Township next week.
Several farmers in Tilden have lost horses due to excessive heat last week.
95 Years Ago – 1926
A.F. Shoemaker is building a large dance parlor east of the Fielding Store. It will be 85 feetX35 feet, enclosed, so it an be used year around.
Several farmers in the Cleghorn area are starting to cut grain.
Mrs. Adelbert McGee and daughter, Betty Lou, departed for Cedar Falls to visit Mrs, McGee’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Turner.
Ed Glines and his sister, Mrs. Edward Rose, are enjoying a visit from their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Al Glines, of Hazel, SD.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Marie Flanagan returned home after spending a week at Lake Okoboji as a house guest of Kathryn and Lorene Collins.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Morkrid of Sanborn have leased the Collins Building on Main Street. They will open a hamburger shop there, next Saturday, selling short orders, lunches, etc.
George Hoxsie and Sam Hoxsie were injured near Lake Benton, MN, Sunday on their way to Northern Minnesota on a fishing trip. Sherman Hoxsie and Louis Bork drove to Lake Benton Monday and brought them home. The car was a total wreck.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dunn entertained relatives and friends at Sunday dinner and supper in honor of their son, Delbert’s 21st birthday.
85 Years Ago -1936
Most of Cherokee County had their 13th day of torrid weather with temperatures 100 degrees and over. Many residents are sleeping outside in their yards.
Due to danger of fire, the Marcus band will be moved to Sjostrom park for Saturday evening band concerts.
Sherman Hoxsie and sons, Paul and George and his father, George H., spent a week fishing trip on Lake Koronio at Painsville, MN.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Ruth Samuelson and Donald Foley, both of Marcus, were married June 12th in St. Andrew’s Catholic Church at Davenport, where Don is employed by the Peoples Light and Power Company.
Henry Goodburn is driving a new Skyway Studebaker Commander that he purchased through local dealer, L.M. Miller.
Spencer Tracey and Mickey Rooney star in “Men of Boystown” showing in the Lyric for 4 nights.
Marcus barbers, Art Jenkins, Harry Baumgartner, Olaf Bakkene and Chels Metcalf, announced that all hair cuts were raised to 50¢ as of July first.
75 Years Ago -1946
Albert Tapp, Lyle Schmillen and Elmer Goodburn, recieved honorable discharges from the U. S. Navy and Raymond King, from the Army.
The Marcus Livestock and Industrial Show will be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sagness of Storm Lake were Thursday evening visitors in the William Witter home. Carl, former music instructor at Marcus public school, is operating a music store in Storm Lake
Dr. M.F. Joynt is driving a new Mercury fordor delivered by the Evans Motor Company
70 Years Ago – 1951
Donald Nacke, Jacque Apel, Francis Zangger and Francis Wendt departed for Milford where they will attend a week of summer camp at the La Sallette Seminary there.
Jerry Meyer and Gerald Garvin departed Saturday for a 2 week vacation in California.
Reginald Allen Pallesen arrived Sunday morning, July 15, weighing 8 lbs. 6 ozs. He is the first child of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Pallesen.
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Means departed for their San Jose, CA home after spending 2 weeks in the J. C. Means home and Mrs. Prudence Michaelson home.
65 Years Ago -1956
Mrs. Earl Miller, Mrs. Art Bierman, Mrs. Kenneth Miller and Rose Ann and Gladys and Lyda Williams spent Wednesday afternoon in the Max Waller home in honor of Mrs, Waller, Donna, that is, on her birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Mason and Jean of Cleghorn spent Wednesday until Saturday at Estherville attending the State Mail Carriers’ Convention.
Loretta Lanzeratte of Gillespie, IL and Stanley Meylor of Marcus are planning an August 25th wedding in Gillespie St. Jude’s Catholic church. They will make their home in St. Louis, MO where he will attend the University of St. Louis,
60 Years Ago – 1961
Duane Bork, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bork, has completed his junior year in medicine at the University of Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Ahlers of Granville are the parents of their first child, a 7 pound 15 ounce son, born Saturday, July 15, named Michael Raymond. Mrs. Ahlers will be remembered as Frances Burch of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Dunn, Linda and Vicki, Mrs. Marie Dunn and Delmer Dunn departed for Texas Saturday where they will spend 10 days visiting relatives.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mrs. Hazel Green and Corbin of Booneville, AR were guests last week in the Floyd Nagle home. Corbin departed Sunday for Davenport where he will enroll in the Palmer School of Chiropractic.
Mr. and Mrs. Fed Hoover and Jim of Colorado Springs, CO were guests of Mrs. Clarence Woodall and visited their son, Mike, over the 4th of July weekend.
Beverly Sand and Jim Nielsen, both of Marcus, are planning a September 10 wedding.She just graduated from Stuart’s School of Cosmotology, Sioux City and Jim is employed by V-C Chemical Company in Marcus.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rassel and family of Cleghorn and Mrs, Charmion Rokes of Remsen were 4th of July weekend guests in the Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rokes home at Waterloo.
Jerry and Greg Pallesen and Leland and David Hogue spent several days fishing in Canada.
Harold Booth of St. Louis and Mrs.Ira Bulyer of Iowa City spent Centennial week in the Forrest Booth home. Mrs. Bulyer continued on to Minneapolis where she joined her daughter and family, the Derrit Leggs, for a two weeks fishing and sight seeing trip in Canada.
45 Years Ago – 1976
JoAnn Dixson and Debbie Goth accompanied Sandy Goth to New York where she departed for Madrid, Spain. JoAnn and Debbie spent a week touring the city and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Rae and girls in Pullummanor, NY.
Velma Jenness is holding an Open House in the new location of Glamour Boutique at 104 West Cedar in the Knudson Building, Wednesday, July 21. Cookies and coffee and drawings for gifts will be held.
Mrs. Donald Gray returned home after a three week vacation. She visited her son, Donald and family at Manito, IL. She flew to Washington, D.C. to spend a week with son, Dennis. She attended church in the Washington Cathedral at the same time President Ford and the Queen of England were there.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Mr. and Mrs. Ric Collins hosted a family picnic Sunday, July 5 at the Children’s Park in Sioux Center, in honor of their daughter, Stacey’s 7th birthday. A host of relatives and friends were in attendance. Bonny Wittkop baked the birthday cakes.
Beth Mugge of Cleghorn has completed her studies at Iowa State University, Ames, and is spending some time in the parental Max Mugge home at Cleghorn.
Diane Garvin, daughter of Dick and Velma Garvin of Marcus, graduated from the Hawkeye Institute of Technology at Waterloo with an Associate of Arts Degree in Interior Arts with a 4.0 grade point average.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Mary Jean Meyer of Anthon and John Edward Deichmann of Marcus were married in Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus June 7th. After a trip to Hawaii, they are at home on a farm south of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Carver and Kevin of Storm Lake were Saturday overnight guests in the home of her mother, Mrs. Ruth Bass. Sunday, they all attended the 4th birthday party of twins, Bret and Bart Powell, in the parental Steve and Kay Powell home in LeMars.
The annual Marcus Fair will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a gala parade at 5:00 p.m. Satuday, August 9th.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Edward Vincent Delaney, 89, passed away Monday, July 15. Funeral services were in Marcus Holy Name Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and their husbands and 2 sisters.
Charlotte Barnes of Westminster, CA, Darlene Tesch of Paullina and Elvira Specht of Cleghorn visited with relatives in Sioux Falls Thursday.
The John Todd family of Phoeniz, AZ arrived to spend some time with Mrs. Todd’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Neir.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Faith Hanson held a memory trip for her five children. They all met in Truesdale, IA at the old school that all five had attended. They drove over to Albert City, trying to take the old bus route but detours prevented that. They walked around the city and saw all four houses that they called “home” in over 16 years. They enjoyed a picnic supper at the shelter house in North Park, where some swam and or played ball.
The family of the late Henry and Agnes Healy Meyer held a family reunion July 12, 13 and 14 on the Bob Stratton acreage at Estherville, IA. They held a Christmas in July gift exchange Saturday evening.
Jennifer Rupp of Cleghorn and Thomas Hochberger of Des Moines are planning an August 31 wedding in Maryhill Visitation Church.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Angilique Kirkman of Rancaqua, Chile is visiting in the Loren Stowater home. She was an exchange student 20 years ago and stayed with Loren and Verla.
David Rohwer was appointed to the Marcus City Council and was sworn in at the July 9th council meeting.
Bill and Mary McIntosh returned to their Cleghorn home July 12 after spending from July 1 with their son, Brent and Sherry McIntosh and family at Moscow Idaho.
