125 Years Ago – 1896
A large water tank, formerly used on Willow Creek, is now in place at the Marcus depot.
George Proctor received oranges and lemons from his fruit farm in southern California. He is pleased with that as the orchard is only 2 years old.
Harness maker, Mr. Brown, has secured a position in a harness shop at Webster City. His family will join him there.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Dr. Richardson returned from his South Africa trip and was glad to return to civilization and God’s Country.
Quite a few citizens report they are eating new potatoes.
Benjamin Delaney and Margaret Treinen were married in Marcus Holy Name Church Wednesday morning. The wedding party enjoyed a sumptious meal in the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. P. Treinen.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Last Saturday, it was 95 degrees in the shade; some reported 102 degrees. The corn needed the warm weather.
Holy Name graduated four young ladies, Cora Loutsch, Margaret Dalton, Jennie Haas and Elizabeth Patterson.
Warren Proctor graduated from a pharmacy school in Iowa City and went to Burlington, KS where his parents now reside.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Work has begun on the new Meriden Public school, an $18,000 structure. One company received the contract for all the work involved.
The young ladies from Holy Name Church are working to raise funds for a new pipe organ.
Agnes and Margaret Collins, Agnes Healy, Clara Berendes and Angeline Sand went to Cedar Falls last week to take a 12 week Normal Course.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Kate Boothby of Washta visited her nephew, Paul Boothby, and son, Clarence Boothby, in the Grand Meadow and Tilden area.
Mabel Cress, grade school and music teacher at Marcus Public and Elmer Holzapfel, new coach at MHS, were married June 10 in LeMars.
A 30 pound catfish was pulled out of Storm Lake by P.M. Godwin.
Owen Mithun, who was 8 years old June 10, was honored on his birthday, when 11 boys joined him for fun, games and lunch, hosted by his mother.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home purchased the adjoining 160 acre farm to add to their 160 acres 11 miles west of Omaha, NE. They will be able to raise more cattle, hogs and grow more food for them to eat.
Wilbur Hodgen shipped 22 head of purebred Hamphire hogs to a large Hampshire hog farm in Texas.
The Marcus Boy Scout Troop #52 has 42 members and is sponsored by the F.I. Goodburn Post, American Legion.
Emory Goodrich of Cleghorn is driving a new Durant auto.
85 Years Ago -1936
Miss Emma Haas of Cleghorn spent several days with Mrs. Kate Zangger in Marcus.
Dr. and Mrs. C.W. Ihle celebrated their 30th anniversary as Cleghorn residents.
Shirley Temple stars in “Captain January” showing in the local Lyric.
Miss Athela Jenkins of Marcus and Edward Hibbing of Paullina will be married June 23 in Marcus Holy Name Church.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Local grocer, J. A. Michaelson, was elected Cherokee County food stamp chairman, to set the federal food stamp program into operation in Cherokee County.
C.W. Dorr delivered a new Town Dodge Four Window sedan to Pete Grauer.
Meriden will have its weekly Thursday evening band concerts under the direction of George Amundson.
75 Years Ago -1946
Mr. and Mrs. John Sand flew out of Omaha for Hollywood, CA to visit his mother, Mrs. Frank Sand and their daughter and son-in- law. Evelyn and Eugene Krause. John will stay a week and his wife will remain for a longer visit.
Although there are four towns named “Marcus” in the United States, our Marcus is the largest. The others are in Washington, South Dakota and West Virginia.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Michaelson will soon be leaving Marcus after operating the grocery store here for 24 years. They will make their home at Alhambra, CA in the near future.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Audi Murphy stars in “Sierra” showing in the Lyric with Wanda Hendrix and Burl Ives.
Everett Biggs of Brampton, Ontario. Canada, was a guest and speaker ar the Marcus Rotary Club meeting Tuesday. Rotarians from LeMars, Alton and Cherokee attended. Everett was an exchange student in England, taking post graduate work there.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Delaney celebrated their Golden Wedding Tuesday, June 19. They were honored at a special Mass in Holy Name and an open house in their home afternoon and evening.
65 Years Ago -1956
Jake Dixson bought the Al Bork residence property for $1200 at auction.
Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell star in “The Seven Year Itch” showing in the Marland Sunday and Monday.
Peggy Siegel, bride-elect of Ray Hansen, was honored at a miscellaneous bridal shower in the Marcus Municipal building Monday evening, June 4th.
Mrs. Lyle Heinis, Linda, Yvonne and Lyle, Jr. were honored at a garden party hosted by friends as they will be moving to the state of Washington to make their new home.
Jane Marie Fitzgerald and Earl F. Rae were married Wednesday afternoon, June 13, in the home of the bride’s parents in Marcus. After a wedding reception, they departed for Tucson, AZ where he will get his Master’s Degree at the University of Arizona.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gettner, Jr. are the parents of a 3 pound one-fourth of an ounce, daughter, born Sunday, June 18. She is named Sherry Lisa and has a sister at home.
“One Foot in Hell” starring Alan Ladd, Don Murray and Dan O’Herlihy” is showing in the Marland Friday and Saturday. It is billed as “ the day Hell came to town wearing a badge”.
Captain Margaret Greff of Whiteman AFB, MO visited with friends in Marcus Sunday.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mike Hoover flew to Great Lakes Naval ReserveTraining Sunday to spend two weeks.
Former Marcus residents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Chinn observed their 50th wedding anniversary, Thursday, June 16th. Both are hospitalized in Las Vegas for surgery.
Ray Wankum was honored at a family picnic Sunday in the Don Wankum home at Merrill. Ray departed June 18 for Fort Jackson, SC for duty in the armed forces.
Phyllis Burch and Larry Rapagnani are planning an August 13 wedding in Marcus Holy Name Church. Phyllis is a 1961 graduate of Marcus Holy Name and of Briar Cliff and teaches in Kansas City, KS. Larry is a senior in Engineering at Kansas University.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Gary Husman departed for training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA. He just graduated from Marcus Community High School.
Over 100 ladies enjoyed the Queen’s luncheon held in the Golf Club House
Friday, June 11. Court Whist was played by many of the ladies with Mrs. Leo Brady winning first and Mrs. Will Berger, last.
Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Roberson, Sr. of Marcus will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday, June 27 with an Open House in Holy Name Hall, hosted by their children.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Kevin James Brady and Kathy Joan Garvin, both of Marcus, have been granted Briar Cliff College Academic Recognition Awards valued at $1,200 for four years. Kevin is a graduate of Marcus Community High School and Kathy is a graduate St. Mary’s of Remsen.
Earl Brown returned to his Capitola, CA home after spending a month visiting his sister, Mrs. Edna Weimer, and other relatives and friends.
Jim Lens, elementary school principal, aced the #9 hole at the Marcus Golf Course. He used a 4 iron on the 190 yard hole. Witnesses were Lorne Stowater, Dave Bride and Ken Bryant. It proved quite costly for Jim as golf tradition is, “Set ‘em up” time in the Lounge.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Marcus and Remsen, along with their rural areas, were swamped with rain and some areas with devastating hail. Some farmers will be replanting beans. The moisture was most welcome as most areas were very dry.
Eric Verdell Johnson is the lone senior in the Meriden-Cleghorn Senior Spotlight. He plans to attend South Dakota State University at Brookings, SD.
Joanne Dixson received a B.A. in teaching and speech pathology at the University of Norhern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Colt Berger, Denise Hohbach and Dennis Ducommun of Marcus, Brent Bryant of Aurelia and Michelle Ludvigson, Meriden, are delegates from Cherokee County who will attend Citizenship Washington Focus for a week at the National 4-H Center in Washington, D.C. Chaperones are Marie Bork of Cleghorn, Betsy Garrison of Woodbury County, Ron Schmillen a volunteer from Cherokee County and Jim Lindgren from Plymouth County.
Jonathan Sand was honored on his 4th birthday with a family gathering. Donna Bird baked a He-Man cake for the occasion.
Pat Reinert, a 1979 graduate of Meriden-Cleghorn High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Reinert of rural Cherokee, graduated from the University of Iowa Law School. He passed his bar exam and was admitted to the Iowa Bar June 13. He and his wife and son will be moving to Fort Lee, VA where he will be a lawyer with the Army.
30 Years Ago – 1991
As the picture of the Barbaras at Barb Martin’s party never got published, I’ll name the individuals who attended. Present were: Barbaras Carlson, McIntyre, Kleis, Burnham, Wurth, Moats, Knutson, Delperdang, Dreckman, Brady, Mittlestadt, Konz, Rosener, Martin and Stodden.
Erin Bindmer and Rory Booth were crowned Queen and King of the MMC Prom.
The MCM sixth grade class enjoyed a field trip to Sioux City in April. They visited the Sioux City Journal, KTIV Channel 4 and stopped at the Floyd Monument.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The MMC Band and Choir received Superior ratings in Orlando, FL. The students went by bus to Omaha and flew to Orlando. Jerry Bertrand directed the band and Lisa Hollander, the choir. They were there from May30 until June3, so they enjoyed Disney World, Kennedy Space Center and many other places of interest.
Fred “Tut” Tentinger passed away Saturday, June 15 in his home. Funeral services were in Holy Name with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include 2 daughters, a son, and a brother.
Nicholas John Glassmaker, a1996 graduate of MMC High School, has been accepted as a freshman at Notre Dame with recognition as a Notre Dame Scholar. He was awarded an $11,100 scholarship as a freshman.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Mike and Jennifer Treinen are the parents of a 7 lb. 14 oz. daughter, born Friday, June 15, named Madison Lea. She has a sister Brooklyn at home.
Severe storms moved through this area Wednesday evening, causing damage over a wide area, with the acreage of Alvern and Janice Kamm near Pierson, hard hit by the storms.
