125 Years Ago – 1896
Marcus Mayor A.H. Dwight and the aldermen, F.A. Bigelow, Louis Gund, James Gurly, John Knox and E. Turner, presented a petition that all streets and alleys in the Barnes Addition opening out on public highways, fenced by wire or other obstructions, be opened immediately.
The city council voted to discontinue the use of street lamps during the summer. One nay vote changed the idea and John Miller was hired to light the lamps for $3.00 a month.
110 Years Ago – 1901
A Mr. Adams, a disciple of Dr. Downy of Chicago, was egged and roughly treated by some locals. He had preached here against anyone that did not believe in their creed.
Marcus taxpayers petitioned the City Council to open Pine and Spruce Streets to the east line of Section #33 in Marcus Township.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Mr. Kelley of Round Lake, MN is the new manager of the Button Elevator in Meriden. He and his family moved to Meriden last week.
The William England home in Grand Meadow Township was destroyed by fire Monday morning. He was starting the gasoline engine on the family washing machine when it exploded and the house caught fire.
Roy and Marion Porter were neither tardy or absent for the school year at Amherst #4 with Lois Fern Kinton as teacher.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Glen Greene entertained relatives Tuesday in honor of her daughter, Glenna Mae’s, second birthday. Guests included her Grandma Sina Bork and other Marcus area relatives.
Harry E. Neir is driving a new Studebaker Sedan which he purchased from L.E. Miller.
The Wright’s Imperial Band played for the dance Thursday, May 6 in the Ekblad Theatre.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Miss Caroline Rekr and Elmer Douvia were married Tuesday morning, April 14 in Remsen St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They will be at home on a farm north of Marcus
Ralph Slagter struck out 11 Grand Meadow batters in an 8-1 victory. Ralph had 3 hits in 3 trips , with Dale Bork getting a triple and a double.
Edgar and Robert Hagey have moved to Fort Dodge and Violet and Clifford Smith have moved to the country.
85 Years Ago -1936
The “Green Diamond” train passed through Marcus on its trial run from Fort Dodge to Sioux City. It is 330 feet long, weighs 230 tons and holds 120 passengers. Many citizens came out to watch it fly by.
Quite a few area residents have visited the Everly, Milford and Iowa Lakes areas which were hit by tornadoes.
Miss Flora Quirin, a Missionary from India, is visiting her parents, Rev, and Mrs. A.J. Quirin.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Howard McConnell, Lee Barnes and Leroy Mossman spent the weekend at the Lakes.
There are 7 grocery store ads from Marcus merchants in this issue of the News: Treinen’s, Straub’s, Dierking’s, Delaney’s, Michaelson’s, Wagner’s and Nagle Bros.
Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart star in “The Philadelphia Story” showing in the Lyric.
Mr.Tom Delaney opened the Delaney Grocery Store here in 1896. His sons continued until 1940 when the third generation took over. The third generation is celebrating its first anniversary with free prizes and bargains.
75 Years Ago -1946
Miss Shirley Klingbeil a 1942 graduate of Marcus High, is a member of the graduating class of the Lutheran hospital nurses training school in Sioux City.
Marcus Public sixth grade class enjoyed the souvenirs from Denmark that Mable Nielsen broiught to school.
The first grade art class at Marcus Public made May baskets for their mothers and filled them with flowers.
Sydney Greenstreet, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Peter Lorre star in “Three Strangers” showing in the Lyric.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Marcus Public school seniors Paul Brown, Kenny Cave, Betty Hobson, Robert Nelson, Carole Weimer and Jeanette Walker, play the lead roles in their class play, “Mistakes at the Blakes”.
Mary Ellen Kelly, 28, of Marcus was voted First Woman of Achievement for 1951 by the Journal Tribune on their wooden anniversary in Sioux City.
Beverly Ione Woodall of Marcus and John Ritz of Washta will be married Tuesday evening, June 12 in the Marcus Methodist church.
65 Years Ago -1956
Wilmer and Butch Heesch, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heesch of Marcus, met for the first time in three and a half years. Wilmer, who is in the Navy visited Butch in Newport News where he is stationed.
A class of 34 eighth graders from Marcus Public, four from Trinity Lutheran and 2 from Simpson Bethel, will graduate May 15.
Kathy Greene, daughter of Mel and Margaret Greene, celebrated her 7th birthday with 17 boys and girls Friday afternoon.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Roth and Associates of Storm Lake, Visser Bros. of Orange City and Johnny’s Electric of Sioux City submitted the lowest bids for the construction of the new Marcus Community High School. The total is $654,742. The new building will cost $12.10 per square foot. the landscaping and grading will be $27,500.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Prunty of Cleghorn celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary April 23.
Mr. and Mrs. Ned Bork, Sr were honored on Mother’s Day, May 7th when all eight of their children, thirty-seven grandchildren and a great grandson were present.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kueny are the parents of a 7 pound daughter, born Sunday, May 1. She is named Mary Beth and has a brother and sister at home. Mrs. Kueny will be remembered as Sally Franck.
Members of the Marcus Garden Club planted shrubs at the Gund Memorial Library.
A class of 60 young people will receive diplomas at Marcus Community High School Commencement exercises, May 25th.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Alesch were Mother’s Day weekend guests of their daughter, Corrine Alesch at the University of Iowa at Iowa City. They also visited daughter, Mary Frances, in Des Moines.
Bruce Marquis attended the C.A.R. National Convention in Washington, D.C. last week.
Mrs. Chris Moritz and Mrs. Martin Ludwig of Remsen attemded Confirmation at Holy Name Church Tuesday evening as grandson, Tim Ludwig, was one of those being Confirmed
45 Years Ago – 1976
Bus Jenness is pictured in the News with a 6 pound catfish but he won’t reveal where he caught it.
Bev Nervig nd Rory Means reigned as Queen and King of Marcus Community High School Prom. “Precious and Few” was the theme of the Prom.
Nancy Meylor, Ann Harman, Tom Roese, Tom Theisen, Dan Gates, Peggy Carney, Kevin Brady and Jolene Powell are featured in the Marcus Eaglet Senior Profiles. All plan further education.
40 Years Ago – 1981
According to this issue, Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1907.
Arlene Bush of Cleghorn was honored at a personal shower Sunday afternoon, May 3. Bev Alesch and Paula Nelson hosted the shower held in the Alesch home.
The Clifford Ferrin farm in Tilden Township became a Century Farm on May 3, 1981. The first owners were Horace Ferrin and his wife, Viola. They are the ones who traveled all 48 states with their team of mules, “Kit and Fly”. The Century Farm Plaque will be presented by Gov. Robert Ray during the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Steve and Mary Erdman are the parents of a 7 lb. 1 oz. daughter, born April 15, named Jessica Vera. She has a brother at home.
Rachelle Carver has been accepted at iowa State University in Business Administration. She is the daughter of Russ and Bea Carver.
Karen Nelson, Scott Rupp and Linda Theisen are pictured in the Marcus Eaglet Senior Spotlight.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Fifteen Marcus females named “Barbara” attended the party in the Barb Martin home, Saturday, May 4. They enjoyed an afternoon of laughter, delicious food and a warm hearth.
The MMC Media Class traveled to Sioux City April 29 and visited the Sioux City Jounal, KTIV Channel 4 and KG95. They enjoyed the day and felt they learned a lot on various types of media.
Rory Booth and Erin Bindner were crowned King and Queen of the MMC Prom.
25 Years Ago – 1996
Bruce Dreckman will be umpiring games in Omaha and Des Moines this summer and some major games.
Mrs. Joseph L. (Josephine) Alesch, 91, passed away Thursday, May 2. Services were held May 6 in Holy Name with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include a son, a daughter, a brother and 2 sisters.
Armella Keffeler, who was 89, May 3, was guest of honor at a party in the Brownstone in Cherokee. Her daughter, Jean Hueser, hosted the gathering.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Dorothy and Keith Benton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, May 12 with an open house in the Marcus Community Center, hosted by their four children
Pictured in the “Finally Done in ‘91” MMC Insider are John Volkert, Abby Alesch, Aaron Brown, Christy Mogensen, Chad Husman, Nichol Puhrmann, Joe Rainboth, Scott Klingbeil, Brent Bird, Josh Orr, Joel Richardson and Josh Schmillen. All plan further education but Chad and he plans to join the Navy.
The MMC Middle School Band earned a first place trophy in Class 1-A at Adventureland-Drake Relays Festival of Bands, Saturday, May 5th.
