A Night Among the Stars
By Elaine Rassel
The reason for there being NO prom in 2020 was not because of bad weather, but rather COVID-19. The graduating class of 2020 had no prom or the usual graduation. Their prom was in the city park later and graduation was a drive-by one. That class will never forget how the pandemic changed their traditions.
Now it is 2021 and the virus is supposedly under control. Students have been going to school but wearing masks. They were able to have a prom this year! The night had arrived and so did relatives and friends to see these young people dressed up! The gym floor had the usual archway for the couple to walk under. There was a lit up big star on the right hand side of the gym and a large lit-up moon on the opposite end. The walkway had glass jars with burning candles in them lining the path. In the background were several cut-out buildings. The scene could be compared to looking out over a city at the many buildings.
Those first to be introduced would walk under the archway, then to the star, and ended up under the moon. The couples paused at all three stations for pictures. The Junior class president, Emily Dreckman was escorted by Gunnar Johnson. The Senior class president, Kristina Goth was escorted by Michael Rupp. The Junior class vice president, Ellie Reuter was escorted by Eban Hicks. The Senior class vice president, Caitlin Evans was escorted by Brett Staab. The Senior class representative Paige Gergen, was escorted by Brenin Stodden. The Junior class representative Taylor Harpenau, was escorted by Gunnar Grage. And, another Junior class representative, Ellie Hilbrands was escorted by Mason Roberts.
It was time for the Juniors to begin their march at this formal event. Wow! We made it through these 33 couples and now it is time to be acquainted with the Prom Court. Girls vying for the Queen title included Molly Reuter, Audra Penning, and Paige Krug. King candidates were Terry Lundeen and Jon Haaven. I would have had a hard time choosing two but it had to be. Terry Lundeen was crowned King and Molly Reuter was crowned Queen. What a time I had to get the King and Queen’s picture. As soon as the King and Queen were crowned, the Prom Court went their own way. Hopefully next year they will all stay an extra minute and have a group picture taken.
As soon as the King and Queen were crowned, people began to leave the stage and go onto the gym floor and take pictures of the couples. It took some time to be able to leave this area.
The couples were going to the Commons Area for their banquet catered by Kim Means. Host/hostess were Andrew Barinsky and Avery Schlenger. The meal consisted of Roast beef, chicken breast, cheesy potatoes, Oreo salad, lettuce, and fruit.
Waiters were Mitchell Schnepf, Dawson Pick, and Kyler Bork. Waitresses were Mykin Youde, Mariah Thomsen, and Alyson Ball.
There was an After Prom Party at the Remsen school from midnight to 3:30 a.m. Thanks to those who sponsor this and keep our MMCRU Prom a safe one with many good memories.
