105 Years Ago – 1920
At the Catholic church Wednesday morning, September 7, the marriage of Joseph Hey to Lillian Gilmore was performed.
Col. G. A. Dain of Carlisle has decided to locate here and will move here as soon as he can make arrangements. Mr. Dain comes well recommended as one of Iowa’s most prominent auctioneers.
John Clarkson, pioneer business man of Marcus, but since moved to Springfield, MO. Died there this week and his remains will be brought here for interment next Sunday.
100 Years Ago – 1925
A twister dipped down Saturday night from the Gilbert Olson farm located seven miles south of town and did considerable damage.
Fred Knox has purchased a cigar stand located in the Commerce building in Sioux City and will take possession October 5.
Mrs. Thomas Roberts had a delightful surprise Tuesday when she enjoyed a visit from Mrs. Minnie Hitchcock and her sister, Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Hitchcock were friends 50 years ago in Wisconsin and had not met since.
95 Years Ago -1930
Frank Welsh has installed a complete waterworks system on his farm south of Marcus.
A Mills Troubadour automatic phonograph and radio has been installed during the week at Fred’s Place. Combing the best qualified of the phonographs and radio, the machine is one of the most up to date.
Dr. Alice Delaney sold her practice to G.R. Hobson of Anona, who will take possession October 4.
90 Years Ago -1935
The J.P. Beck Company of Marcus announced their fall opening of ladies ready to wear garments for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 24-25.
Funeral service were held at the Christian church Sunday for Mrs. Ben Halley, a former resident, who was killed Thursday when the Haller automobile was forced off the highway one and done half miles east of Everly.
The Hamilton Hardware of Marcus will hold a special showing and demonstration of the New All-enamel Majestic Range all next week.
85 Years Ago -1940
Dorothy Meylor, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Meylor, became the bride of Marvin Dugan at an impressive single ring ceremony Monday morning, Sept 16, at Holy Name church.
Mrs. John Bjork passed away at her home Wednesday, September 18. Funeral services will be held Friday.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Andu Fekete are the parents of a 6lb 10 oz. Daughter born Sunday, September 23 at St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City. This is the couple’s first child.
Martin Nelson has purchased from H.A. Huesenkveldt a building which for a number of years was occupied by Hey’s Harness Shop. After redecorating and repairing the building. Mr. Nelson will move the Panatorium within the next month.
J.L. Jenkins passed away Monday evening at the hospital in Hartley, he is the father of Art Jenkins of Marcus.
Vernon Grauer’s Angus baby beef which he showed at Marcus and at the Plowing match, won first in the senior Angus class at the Sioux City 4-H show which included four states.
Charles Gutenkauf is much improved at the Veteran’s hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Gutenkauf and children have moved into their new home on Locust Street which they purchased recently.
75 Years Ago -1950
Charles Kracke, 60, a life long resident of this community, passed away at his home following a stroke.
Services for Frank Rubbert who passed away at his home Wednesday will be held Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Lois Berger of Remsen became the bride of Charles Krekow at an impressive wedding ceremony which was solemnized before the alter of Christ Lutheran Church by the Rev Noack Sunday afternoon, September 3.
Paul Hoeppner purchased the Marcus Grocery and was given immediate possession Tuesday. Mr. & Mrs. Hoeppner and their daughter Susan, are from Arnolds Park.
The Aberdeen Angus baby beef of Faye Mugge of Cleghorn, grand champion of the Marcus Fair, brought 47 cents a pound at the baby beef sale Thursday.
Mrs. S.A. Smorawski will sell her household goods at public auction at the residence two block southeast of Holy Name church Saturday afternoon. She recently September 12 in St. John’s Lutheran church at Germantown and burial was in St. John’s cemetery.
70 Years Ago -1955
A farewell dinner was held Sunday in the home of Mrs. Alvina Schmillen in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Hanno and Marcia of LeMars who are moving soon to California.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Quirin, 94, a pioneer resident of the Marcus community were held in Holy Name church here Saturday morning Burial was made in Holy Name church here Saturday morning Burial was made in Holy Name cemetery beside her husband.
The new Masonic Temple in Marcus will be dedicated at a ceremony next Tuesday evening. The dedication ceremony will be at eight o’clock and will be preceded by a six thirty dinner.
A bolt of lightning, apparently unable to make up its mind, struck at four places here Monday afternoon. A fire alarm was turned in at the Ray Juhl home when fire flared out of the hot air ducts as the bold struck. The only damage was to fuses. The bolt struck the Wallin Blacksmith shop, where it ruined a welder, and the adjourning Evans Implement company. No damage was done at the Evans Co. The fourth place to feel the bolt was the John Dunn home, where some slight damage was done to the wiring.
65 Years Ago -1960
Thirty three of the 39 young people who ere graduated from the public and Holy Name schools last spring have enrolled in universities and colleges this fall.
Mrs. Albert Anderson 86, died Tuesday evening at her home in Marcus after a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Trienen were pleasantly surprised Friday evening when a host o frelatives and friends arrived at their home to help them celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary.
A son, Dean Robers, was born to Mr. & Mrs. Robert Sand Sunday, August 29at Sacred Heart hospital in LeMars.
The Marcus post of the American Legion is planning to award 40 year medals to its eligible members.
The Idle Hour Cafe is now the Sioux Line bus stop in Marcus replacing Harold’s Rexall Drugs in that capacity.
