125 Years Ago – 1896
The large water tank at the depot is now full and is being used daily by the trains. It will be handy in case of a fire in that area.
Miss Beaumont, who has been visiting Mrs. Mankey here, went east Tuesday morning.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Henry Mankey, of the Citizens’ Bank and John Bird will put cement walks in front of their business places. No doubt, others will do the same.
Miss Nora Wixcel and Arthur Day were married in the home of her brother, Milt Wixcel. Rev, B. Wm. Salmon, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiated.
Mrs. F.M. Elser has hats for sale at a reduced price in her shop between Niemann’s Jewelry Store and Eade and Goodburn Meat market.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Miss Bertha Williams and Jule Hendrickson were married June 14 at 8:00 p.m. in the home of the bride’s parents.
105 Years Ago – 1916
Excavation was begun on the A.J. Lenth residence, a 30X38, 7 room home with bath, made of hollow tile with a cement covering, similar to the Gund Bank and residence.
Albert Winters of LeMars has purchased the P. J. Alvine Meat Market in Marcus and is in possession of same.
V. Sjostrom is building a bowery on the Wm. Hoxsie lots at the south end of Marcus Main Street. It will be 40X90 feet, made of hard maple and used for dancing and skating.
95 Years Ago – 1926
Miss Ruth Wixcel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.M. Wixcel, was named valedictorian of the 20 member senior class at Marcus Public. She will teach in Tilden Twp. next fall.
Ben Beck and his Minstrel Show departed on a tour that will take them to the Canadian line. Ben says they sometimes make money and sometimes they don’t.
Marie Franck, 10 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Franck, was badly burned on her face when she dumped kerosene into a heated cook stove. She may be scarred.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dorr, Evelyn, Dorothy, George and Ronald, are planning a visit to the Black Hills.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Clara Bruce replaced Miss Judd as teacher at Marcus Public as Miss Judd was ill last week.
Joe Hamad will return to Marcus to open a shoe repair shop. He left here a few years ago to go to Oelwein but thinks he will do better in Marcus.
Norma Jean Tap, 2 year old daughter of Mrs. Sadie Tap, died as a result of being struck by a car driven by John McDonald, 23, of Cherokee. He was exonerated by a coroner’s jury.
85 Years Ago -1936
Rev. and Mrs. Alvin Peterson arrived here Tuesday from Blair, NE to be the new pastor of the Nazareth Lutheran Church.
Helen Franck and Florence Anderson have secured employment in the Howard Hotel in Sioux City.
Lucille Anderson, who has been a reporter for the Marcus News for 2 years, resigned and has a position in a store in Cherokee. Lucille Barnes is helping out at the News.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Jule Hendrickson spent Friday and Saturday with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hendrickson, at Lake Benton, MN.
James Cagney, Olivia DeHavilland and Rita Hayworth, star in “ Strawberry Blonde” showing in the local Lyric.
The regular meeting of the Bundles for Britain will be held at headquarters with Mrs. Hattie Wilson and Mrs. Fred Mossman serving.
Betty Dickson has replaced Arlene Erickson in the Ralph Booth Black and White Hamburger Shop.
75 Years Ago -1946
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagey are the parents of a nine pound son, born June 20, named Steven Robert.
Paul Norris is spending the summer months with his parents, Dr. and Mrs, L.L.Norris, Paul attends college at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia.
Les Brown and his Band of Renown are appearing at the Roof Garden at Arnold’s Park Friday night, July 5th. A bathing beauty contest will be held. Admission is $1.50, including tax.
70 Years Ago – 1951
Earl Rae, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Rae of Marcus, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and departed for Harris Island, off the coast of South Carolina, for 5 weeks of training. If he passes the course there, he will become a candidate for officer’s training.
Francis J. Walsh, 79, a former Marcus resident, passed away June 23 in Sioux City after a long illness. He married Mary Jane Willey of Marcus and she died in 1933. Survivors include 2 stepdaughters, Mrs. Myrtle Benedict of Marcus and Mrs. C.H. Everhart of Canton, SD. Services and burial were in Sioux City.
Mrs. Alfred Chinn and Lorraine of Henderson, NV are visiting in the Joe Schmitz home here. Mrs. Chinn was called home due to the serious illness of her father, Rudolph
Luchterhandt, who passed away Tuesday, June 26th.
65 Years Ago -1956
Mr. and Mrs. Ab Smith, Steven and Danny and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Smith have moved to the large house on the Bindner farm four miles southwest of Marcus. The Lawrence Slagter family have moved into the Heesch apartment vacated by the Leonard Smiths.
Dr. M.D. Hayden has purchased the two residence properties which belonged to Victor Straub. Doc will use them as rentals for now but intends to convert the big house into a small hospital.
The Marland Theatre offers, “Song of the South”, “Ransom” and “The Road to Denver” this week.
60 Years Ago – 1961
An estimated 1,500 people from every town in this area and far away places visited the new Farmers State Bank in Marcus at their open house Saturday.
Sand Seed Service will have 12 ponies at their Nutrena Feed Store Saturday July 29 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will give free rides to kids accompanied by their parents or guardian. Kids can register to win a free pony with saddle, blanket and bridle.
55 Years Ago – 1966
David Lee Bryant 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bryant of Grand Meadow, died of suffocation when he sank into a bin of newly shelled corn. A brother, Steven, who was with him, tried to free him. He ran for help but it was too late. David is survived by his parents, brother Steven and 2 sisters.
Forty-one families attended the Marcus California Picnic at Houghton Park, June 5th. Eugene Gettner was elected president for next year, Art Slagter, vice-president and Marilyn Gettner, secretary-treasurer.
Catherine Mary Fish of Minneapolis, MN and Thomas Bortscheller of Marcus are planning a September 10th wedding.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Mrs. Ella Galigan and Mary Lou and Claude Whited, Jr. attended a buffalo barbeque at the Bill Galigan farm at Kenneth, MN Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Langdon Polson were honored on their Silver Wedding Anniversary when 40 relatives and friends gathered in their home for dinner Sunday. Langdon and Mary were married June 16, 1946.
Corrine Alesch is studying Spanish and Latin American History in the Universidad Ibero-Americana in Mexico.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Ronda Igou and Joe Kestel, both of Marcus, were married May 29th in Marcus Holy Name Church. They will make their home in Marcus.
John Bentz of Marcus will begin his studies September 7 in the Marketing Management Program at NITC at Sheldon, a six quarters program in length.
Sgt. Vance Marquis is spending several weeks in the parental Vance Marquis home. He has spent the past year in Greece with the U.S. Air Force.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Sandy Goth and Scott Henke, both juniors at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City and both of Marcus, were named to the Dean’s List III.
Linda Sue Lehnhoff and Douglas Edgar Roseen were married May 30 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Marcus. After a honeymoon in Florida, they will make their home in Marcus.
Msgr. A.W. Begrens will be honored at a community farewell open house in Holy Name Hall Sunday, June 28. Everyone welcome.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Ronald and Ellen Briggs, formerly of this area, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 24 in Edgerton, FL
Ted Springer and daughters, Jody and Jamie, of Hawaii, were guests in the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Springer, at Cleghorn.
Gentle Persuasion will play for the Marcus Fair Benefit dance July 3 in the Community Center with Kris Case as vocalist.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church was built in 1991 at a cost of $2,250. It was debt free when it was dedicated January 1, 1992.They held a Centennial celebration June 22 -23.
Randy Peters received a Master of Science in Secondary School Adminitration from the School of Education at Drake University.
Catherine Zangger Fekete Nepkie, 67, of Palos Verdes Estates, CA died May 16 in Torrance, CA. She was a 1941 graduate of Marcus Holy Name High School and had worked for the Marcus News. Burial was in Long Beach. Survivors include her husband, 3 daughters and 2 brothers.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The Marcus area was pelted with tennis ball size hail, high winds and over seven inches of rain Wednesday evening. Most homes suffered roof and window damage and some farmers will have to replant.
Sue Erickson of Cherokee announces the engagement and coming marriage of her daughter, Holly, and Neal Galles of Marcus. The wedding will be Septemer 14 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Mary Lu and Emmett Wolf will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary July 8, in the Marcus Community Center. It will be hosted by their children and grandchildren.
Adam and Dawn Roberts of Marcus are the parents of a 9 pound 3 ounce daughter born Tuesday, May 22. She is named Jocee Ann and has a sister at home.
