110 Years Ago – 1915
Rev. Tucker of Erie, Illinois has accepted a call from the Marcus Church of Christ and will begin May 23.
Don Robinson, son of Mr. & Mrs. J.S. Robinson of Cleghorn was married Saturday to Ruby Albers of Troy, NY.
H.H. Niemann, pioneer jeweler and dealer in Edison machines, signed the biggest contract for advertising ever taken by a small merchant in Marcus.
The old fire bell, long disgrace in such an up to date city as Marcus, will soon go in the discard. C.W. Dorr and Steve Londergan are circulating a petition for funds with which to purchase an electric whistle.
100 Years Ago – 1925
S.H. Larsen, manager of the Farmers Elevator at Cleghorn for the past five years, tendered his resignation lats Monday.
Gus Hadel has begun the construction of a new bungalow on Ash Street which will be completed sometime this fall and will be occupied by Mr. & Mrs. Bryon Vonghn.
The two brick building on Main Street owned of G.A. Brink of Marcus have been traded to Mrs. Matilda Johnson of Cherokee. Mr. Brink is taking Cherokee county land on the deal.
A large crowd attended the annual art display at the Marcus Public School last Friday evening.
A grand opening of the new dance hall in the Ekbald building on Thursday night will feature Cato’s Vagabonds.
Marion Frank, 18 year old Marcus lad, was drowned in Storm Lake Sunday morning while he and two companions were on a fishing expedition. Sherman and Fred Hoxsie were rescued after the boat capsized.

Mrs. Carl Stried, who suffered a paralytic stroke 2 weeks ago, passed away at her home in Liberty Township Friday afternoon, May 10.
Nearly 300 farm women from all parts of the country were in attendance at the annual achievement days held in the Methodist Church basement at Cherokee on Wednesday.

Marcus, with a population of 1,216 people, has passed Remsen by 22 people according to the first figures released by the census office at Cherokee.

Last rites for George Weimer, 87, were held last Wednesday, May 16 at the Methodist Church in Marcus.
Lawrence Slaghter, 21 seaman first class, is spending a leave with his mother, Mrs. Agusta Slagter, after active duty in the Pacific Theatre aboard the Destroyer Yarnall.
Wylie J Satterlee received the honor of being elected at Commander of the Ninth District of the American Legion.
Funeral Services for George Tult were held Wednesday afternoon, May 16, at the Methodist Church with Rev. Fremont Paul and Rev. George Osborn of Mapleton officiating.
Uncle Sam’s mail carried two very precious long looked for letter to the box of W.W. Bass Tuesday morning, written by Pfc. Lawrence Bass who has been held prisoner by the German’s since February 17 for a period of 27 months.
A display of World War II souvenirs are now in the display windows at Wagner’s Store. The souvenirs were sent to Mr. & Mrs. Ole Wallin during the past months by their sons.
Wounded by schrapnel in Germany on February 10. Private Harold L. Bork, 26 is now recovering in the US General Hospital in England. He has received a purple heart.

Funeral services for Mrs. William Dickson, 56 a life long resident of Marcus, was held Friday morning in Holy Name Church.
Bob and Herb Stowater, Junior Slagter, Rex Rosburg, Jerry Rae and Roger Leavitt will take off this weekend for Lake Karakan, Canada in search of fresh meat.
Shirley Mayer and Betty Ann Holmes were named valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class of Marcus High School at its commencement exercises last Thursday evening.
A housewarming was held in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ivan Addy Tuesday evening by close neighbors to welcome them to the neighborhood.
Last rites for Mrs. Clarence Zangger were held Wednesday May 23 at two at the Methodist church with Rev. Fremont Faul officiating.
Lightning struck a barn at the Ed Polson residence early Tuesday morning during an electrical storm. The building was only slightly damaged.

John Roberts of Elizabeth, Illinois a former Marcus resident, passed away last Friday at his home.
Claire Meehan officiated as freshman May Queen at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Halmar Van Wymersman, a farmer living near Marcus, has reported the presence of at least three giraffes in the neighborhood of his farm.
Robert Meehan of Marcus, will graduate form Loras College Sunday, June 5.
Forty relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Horace Perrin on Memorial Day for a picnic dinner.

Mrs. C.W. Ihle, 82, of Clehgorn, died Sunday, May 29 at 9:30 am at her home after a long illness.
Seba Lodge Number 463 of Marcus will mark it’s 75th anniversary at a program next Thursday evening, June 9.
Mr. & Mrs. Earl Miller of Larrabee, who will observe their 35th wedding anniversary, will be honored at an open house Sunday, June 5.
Mrs. Sophia Dorr was honored at a surprise dinner in her home Sunday, the occasion being her 88th birthday.
Harvey Giebe, 67, passed away this Thursday noon at his home following an illness of several weeks.

Mrs. Charlotte Lepper, 84, of Cherokee, died Friday afternoon at the hospital there after a lingering illness.
Jerry Boots, son of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Boots of Marcus, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the commencement exercises fo the State University of Iowa at Ames.
The congregation of the Union Township Presbyterian Church will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the church on Sunday the 13th of June at two in the afternoon.
John Norris, son of Dr. and Mrs. L.L. Norris, received the Degree of Doctor of Medicine at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska at commencement exercises which were held May 31 at the Civic Auditorium.
Ray Drefke, son of Mr. & Mrs. Delmar Drefke, received his Doctors Degree in Veterinary Medicine at commencement exercises Saturday at Iowa State University at Ames.
Mrs. Glenn Cline, 67, died Saturday morning in Cherokee after a lingering illness.

Mr. & Mrs. E.G. Goodrich of Cleghorn, will be honored Sunday, June 7 in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Cleghorn School Building.
Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Johnson are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday, May 20 at St. Luke’s West is Sioux City.
The first Charles Rosburg Athlete Scholar Award was presented to John Mayer, son of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Mayer, at the Second Annual Awards Night at the Marcus Community School.
Several families gathered at the Grand Meadow School Sunday evening for a pot luck supper as a farewell courtesy for Mr. & Mrs. Don Dix and their daughter, Penny Jane, who are moving from the community.

Mr. & Mrs. Joe Cronin of rural Marcus, will be honored at a family diner to be hosted by their children on Sunday, June 1 in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Roger Bainbridge of Marcus are the proud parents of a son born May 14 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. William Davis, 53, of Reno, Nevada, died May 19 in a Reno, hospital after an illness of several weeks.
The Board of Directors of McCulloch International Airlines has recently appointed Lorna Fuhrmann as their vice-president of industrial relations. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Fuhrmann of Cleghorn.
Eldon Johnson of Remsen, son of Mr. & Mrs. Earl Johnson of Marcus has been named to the dean’s List for the last semester at Westmar College in LeMars.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mr. & Mrs. Terry Pallesen, Prairie View, Illinois, will leave June 17 for the Philippine Islands as part of Summer Overseas Ministires Program, sponsored by Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Deerfield, Illinois. Terry is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Ken Pallesen.
Mr. & Mrs. Weldon Ohlendorf, Jr. of Remsen, are the parents of a new daughter born on May 13.
A retirement party at the Marcus Grade School was held for Mrs. Doegmiller, who is retiring after having taught for over 20 years.
Neal Johnson, a Meriden-Cleghorn 8th grader, was the winner of the Cherokee County Historical Society’s Third Annual Robert C.Perry History Award.
Kathleen Bies, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John F. Dunn of Marcus, and Lisa Dorr, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Craig Dorr of Marcus, have been named Roadman Scholars for the year at Morningside College in recognition of academic achievement.
