95 Years Ago -1930
An American Legion Post was organized in Cleghorn last week, and was voted to name the post in honor of Adrian Olson, who died of influenza at Camp Dodge.
F.G. Mossman and A.C Wilson have been appointed members of the local school board to succeed A.G. Brink and W.C. Barnes who recently resigned.
Dr. Willard Scott noted lecturer and humorist will appear a the Marcus Oprea House next Monday evening as the last number of the lecture course.
Marcus new osteopath physician, Dr. Mickel, arrived here last week and has secured a suite of rooms in the First National Building.
100 Years Ago – 1925
James Nield carried off the individual honors at the home track meet Friday afternoon, having a total of 33 points and is eligible for a monogram for breaking the home record in the broad jump.
Thomas Pfaffle, 35, brother of Mrs. Peter Grauer, died at his home near Pukwana, SD, Sunday evening following injuries received in an accident on the farm the previous Friday.
Perry King, manager of the Marcus baseball team is hitting the ball hard to arrange an interesting schedule and has arranged seven games.
Seventeen young men and women will receive their diploma as graduates of the Marcus High School, Thursday evening, May 29.
Principal A.V. Jensen and 11 members of the agricultural class of the Marcus Public School drove to Sioux City, Wednesday where they inspected the Swift Co. Plant, the Hanford Produce Co. The Sioux City Journal Office and the Merit Bakery.
90 Years Ago -1935
A convention of the County Federation of Women’s Clubs will be held at the Japanese Garden in Marcus May 1. The local Woman’s Club and Tourist Club will be the hostess clubs.
Dan Colins, 74 and Louis Collins, 35, both of Marcus, were in the hospital in LeMars Wednesday evening suffering from severe lacerations after having had an automobile accident near Maurice.
The final contest in the state declamatory series was held Friday evening at Fairfield. Loren Dorr of the Marcus Public School represented Northwest Iowa.
Much field work has been done in this territory the past ten days. The top soil is inexcellent condition and seeding of oats and barley has been done. Early seeding received the benefit of the snow on Monday which fell softly and melted as it touched the ground.
Miss Kathryn Matcalf is working at the switchboard at the telephone office this week.
W.W. Bass has installed a frigidaire costing $500.

Albert Henry Kluender passed away at his home Friday afternoon, April 19, after a lingering illness, at the age of 57 years, two months and 18 days.
Adrian Anderson died Tuesday night, April 16, following an illness of several months. He was 69 years, one month and 23 days old.
George Kirchner, farmer and businessman in Marcus community for 33 years, died suddenly in his car on his way to work Tuesday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. Aage Miller are the proud parents of a daughter born last Thursday.
A number of friends gathered at the home of Mrs. William Petrie last Thursday afternoon in honor of her birthday.
The Lyric Theatre was filled to its utmost capacity last Thursday eveing with a crowd of more than 300 persons who were present to witness the program preseented by the Farm Bureau units of Marcus and Amherst townships.
In a quiet wedding ceremony Miss Ruby Dicks, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Dicks, became the bride of Clifford Wetherell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Wethrell of Cherokee.
A group of relatives and friends met in the R.J. Luchterhandt home Thursday night in honor of the forth-ninth wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Luchterhandt.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Pfc. Dwight Helfenstin, 18 only son of Dr. and Mrs. Roy Helfenstein, Mason City, was killed in action in Germany on April 7. He was a nephew of W.W. Bass, Marcus.
Jimmy Schmeider, former Marcus resident, passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital Sunday evening.
Lloyd Barnes was injured in a farm accident Wednesday morning at his farm south of town where the Wilbur Shefstad family is now living.
Mrs. Raymond Feringer received the happy news by telegram Tuesday morning that her husband has been released from a German prision camp, where he has been held captive for several months.
Mr. & Mrs. Harold Johnson are the parents of a daughter born to them at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars last Wednesday, April 18.
It was one of those ironic of fate that called the Marcus Fire Department to answer a fire alarm on the night of the annual firemen’s ball, which also may be the last, due to the reconversion of the dance hall.
Cpl. John Keegan, 19, was killed in action March 7 in performing his duty and service of his country acording to a telegram received by his mother Mrs. S. A. Smorawske, Friday evening.

Melvin Dorr was named president of the Rotary Club at a meeting of the Club.
A son, Daniel Frank, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Grauer are the parents of a duaghter born Monday, April 3.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Brady were pleasantly surprised by a group of relatives and friends on their 10th wedding anniversary.
The seniors of Holy Name school are busy on the production of their class play “The House of the Flashing Light” to be presented after Easter.

RJ “Bob” Gordon, 73 a former resident of Marcus, passed away recently at a Washington, DC hospital according to word received here by Mrs. Fred Knox, a cousin of Mr. Gordon.
Another recognition was added to the literary laurels of Mary Ellen Kelly, Marcus, when the annual awards of Iowa Press Women, Inc. were announced Sunday. Mary Ellen received the award for the best historical and biographical article written by an Iowa Press woman for the past year.
Mrs. Floyd Hamilton, 64 Seattle, Washington, passed away Monday, April 11 in Seattle hospital, following a heart attack suffered Easter Sunday.
Mr. & Mrs. James Smith are the parents of a daughter born Sunday morning April 24 in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Two 10th wedding anniversaries were observed Sunday evening with a 3 course dinner at the Arthur Dorr home. The honored couples were Mr. & Mrs. Warren Consoer, and Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Dorr.
Bob Sand reports that 11 of his fall pigs have turned up missing and he believes that they’ve been stolen.

The voters of the Marcus Community, the Tilden Township and the Grand Meadow school districts will go to the polls next Wednesday to vote on the question of combining the three districts.
Funeral Services for Leo Carey, 74 Sioux City were held in Holy Name Church here Wednesday and burial made in the church cemetery.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Cronin are the parents of a son born Wednesday., April 20 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Bernard Kosse, 84, died in a LeMars hospital Tuesday night from injuries received from a fall from a tractor last Friday.
John Addy of Troop 113, Marcus was one of 44 Boy Scouts to received an Ad Altare Dei medal. The medal is the highest award in Catholic scouting and it was presented to him by the Most Rev. Joseph Mueller, bishop of the Sioux City diocese.
Mrs. Clyde Conley is recovering from a heart attack suffered a week ago.
Ivar Nelson, 70 a Marcus farmer for many years, died suddenly Saturday afternoon.
Jean Rutter has accepted a third and fourth grade teaching position at Truesdale for the 60-61 school year.

Mrs. Ben Saner was honored Friday afternoon at a birthday party at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. are parents of a son born Friday April 16 at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
The 45 voice choir of Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin will present a concert of sacred music at Peace Lutheran Church on May 2.
Miss Evonne Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Iver Johnson, Washta, was initiated into Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority March h28.
The Marcus Cinderman ran away with the Comet Relays on Wednesday, April 21. Sanow and Galvin placed one and two in the hundred with Sanow setting a new school record of 10.3.
Mr. & Mrs. Durward Rieper, Cleghorn, are parents of a son born Saturday, April 17 at Sacred Heart Hospital.

An open house honoring Miss Alm Anderson on the occasion of her 85th birthday anniversary will be held Sunday afternoon. April 26, at the Fellowship Hall of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Will Berger, Marcus will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, April 26 with a 1 o’clock dinner at the Grace United Methodist.
John Hohbach 80, 731 North Lorna Drive Lodi, California died in a local hospital Wednesday morning, April 1 following a short illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Floyd Bentz entertained at dinner Thursday honoring Mrs. Bentz’s parents Mr. & Mrs. August Porath of Newell on their 50th wedding anniversary and Mr. Porath 80th birthday.

On Sunday April 13 Grace Methodist Church of Marcus celebrated the close of 100 years of service to the community with plans to continue the same kind of ministry.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom McIntosh are parents of a son born Thursday, Aoril 3.
Jane Carey, Marcus was one of 18 women students at Iowa State University to be inducted into the Order of the Rose, student honorary during Residence Hall Week.
Over 60 Marcus high school musicians participated in State Small group Music Contest at Akron, Friday and Saturday April 11 and 12. Out of 62 entries Marcus received 24 I’s, 27 II’s and one III rating.
Mrs. Robert Waller, Cedar Falls daughter of Mrs. Vivian Wiedemeier, Marcus will receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from the University of Northern Iowa on May 17.

Friends of Frank Burch former manager of the Marcus Golf Course are invited to an open house held at the golf course this Friday evening, April 25 in honor of Frank’s 80th birthday.
Mrs. Greg Winterfield, 27 Remsen and formerly of Hawarden, died Saturday April 19 in an automobile accident near Remsen.
Mrs. Henry Hansen, 67 Remsen, died Tuesday, April 15 in a hospital at Orange City of a a long illness.
Max and Debra Velasquiz, Lakewood, Colorado, are parents of a baby girl born Easter Sunday, April 6.
Lee Gowan 84, a former Cleghorn resident, died Tuesday, April 15 in Panorama City, California after a brief illness.
