125 Years Ago – 1896
C.I. Bass shipped 50 head of hogs that averaged 320 pounds. Fred Meyer shipped 22 that averaged 420 pounds. They brought $2.40 to $2.70.
The new well at the mill is furnishing an abundance of water and they do not use city water at all.
John Hanham purchased A.B. Olson’s interest in the blacksmith shop and is ready to do all work in that line.
110 Years Ago – 1901
Miss Eda Raun and Frank J. Marquis were married Wednesday, June 5 in her parents’ home with Rev. Harvey of the Methodist Church officiating.
Wm. J. Weaver, 41, of Amherst Twp. died Tuesday morning leaving his wife and several children.
Marcus held memorial exercises in the Bird building. The music was grand and the decorations were beautiful.
115 Years Ago – 1906
Fred Paine has started a new telephone line from the switch board running east and west from Johnson Studio to the James Dalton residence
105 Years Ago – 1916
Mrs. I.M. Jackson, 74, nee Clara Straw, one of the first settlers in Marcus, passed away after four days of fighting pneumonia. She and her husband came here in 1872 when the only building here was the ICCR depot. They built the first dwelling in Marcus. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, a son and a brother.
Oscsar E. Heline and Mabel Magee were married Friday evening, June 2 in the home of his brother, Charles, in Cherokee. After a honeymoon at the Iowa Lakes, they will be at home on a farm east of Marcus.
C.W. Smith, 95, of Minneapolis visited his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kate Smith, and in the Gilbert Evans’ home
95 Years Ago – 1926
Mrs. Luther Miller and sons, Charles and Oliver, departed Saturday evening for Chicago where they will visit 3 of her Aunts.
Mark Bancroft, Raymond Quirin and Ronald Delaney, all Marcus lads and students at Creighton University in Omaha, are home for summer vacation.
Thompson Motor Co. of Marcus has new Chevrolets for sale from $510 to $765. Nagle Bros. offers the Essex “6” coach for $864.
90 Years Ago – 1931
Nineteen little boys and girls received their First Holy Communion in Marcus Holy Name Church Thursday morning. Included in the group were Lorne and Lois Alesch, Junior Erickson, Betty Lou Evans, Mary Quirin, Pauline Jenkins, Maxine Berendes and others.
Lambert Johnson, son of Mr. and Mr. Arthur Johnson of Amherst completed his license commercial course in the Lincoln airplane and flying school. He has moved to Oklahoma City to take up aviation work.
Ken Maynard stars in “Fighting Three” showing in the Lyric.
Miss Anna Blanche McLaughlin and Charles F. Kohn were married Wednesday, May 20 in Marcus Holy Name Church.
85 Years Ago -1936
Four of the Ben Hueser’s children, Vernon,11, Jean,9, Leland, 8 and Lester, 5, had perfect attendance at Tilden #3 school this year.
Carl Sagness and 14 members of his school band played their first concert of the season on Main St. Saturday evening.
J.W. Nield attended the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Isaac Gordon, at Brunswick, MD. He will spend two weeks there.
80 Years Ago – 1941
Elmer Bjorntad directed the Marcus Municipal band in its first concert of the season. The band played for one hour on a very chilly night.
Relatives and friends gathered in the Ray Carey home Sunday to help their daughter, June, celebrate her 12th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Frangenberg and daughter, Connie, welcomed an 8 lb. 9 oz. son, who arrived on June 6. It is also their wedding anniversary.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Mott weighed 8 lbs. and 2 ozs. and is named Bradley Warren.
75 Years Ago -1946
Quite a few Marcus girls have been employed by the State hospital in Cherokee for the summer. They include Lois and Margaret Pitts, Roberta Muller, Bonnie and Marie Meylor, Audrey Bird, Norma Means, Bernadette Meylor, Joan Nielsen and Rita Garvin.
Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman star in Edna Ferber’s “Saratoga Trunk” showing in the Lyric for four nights.
Mary Georges of Columbus, Ohio arrived here to spend a few weeks visiting her brother, Joe Georges. Mary is employed by the Bradford-Husch Co. in Columbus.
70 Years Ago – 1951
The Marcus Commercial Club voted to sponsor a Community Picnic at the local playground on the 4th of July, with ball games and hopefully, a fireworks.
Mrs. Margaret Barry of Cherokee and William Rubbert of Marcus were married recently in Cherokee. After a wedding trip to Excelsior, MO, they will make their home in Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Miller and family of Fresno. CA visited in the home of his mother, Mrs. Lill Miller, and with other relatives and friends for a week.
65 Years Ago -1956
Dr. Charles Ihle who arrived in Cleghorn July 12, 1906 and never left, will be honored on his 50th anniversary with a dinner in the school gymnasium Saturday evening, June 23. He was raised in Liberty Twp. and attended the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Loy L. Julius has leased office space on the second floor of the McGivern building and will open a dental practice there in the near future. He and his wife and four children will move into the late Mary Holm house.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Bork who are making their home at Glendale, AZ will hold a public auction of their Marcus home and household goods Monday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bird are the parents of a 9 lb. 2 oz. daughter, born Saturday, June 9, named Colleen Patricia.
60 Years Ago – 1961
Sherry Hoefling of Marcus, bride-elect of Eugene Brady, was honored at a bridal shower Sunday, June 4th.
“Mein Kampf”, the terrifying true story of Hitler’s Reich, is showing in the Marland Sunday and Wednesday.
Rev. Samuel K. Asonte of Gehana, Africa was guest speaker at Meriden Free Church Monday evening.
Patty Drefke arrived home from Good Thunder, MN where she has been teaching. She will attend summer school at Westmar College.
55 Years Ago – 1966
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Klingborg returned home after a 3 week vacation in Europe. Their son, David, who is in the Army in England, joined them on a tour of the continent.
Mrs. Fred Mossman resigned as librarian of the Marcus Public Library after serving 13 years. She was honored at a dinner May 31st.
Mrs. Ed Schnoes, Jr. was the winner of the grill and Charles Beaton won the radio given away by McKernan’s Store.
50 Years Ago – 1971
Rodney Prescott and Jim Willems have enlisted in the Air Force and departed June 14 for basic training at Lackland Base, San Antonio.
Mr. and Mrds. Gerald Barry departed for Fort Eustis, VA where he will be on active duty for 3 months wih the Army Reserve.
Margaret Jenness of Marcus and Louis Corzilius of Cherokee are planning a September wedding.
45 Years Ago – 1976
Dr. and Mrs. Ron Galles are the parents of an 8 lb. 6 oz. son, born June 3. He is named Nathan Ray and has a sister and a brother at home.
The Cleghorn City Council appointed Marlin VerSteeg to replace Virgil Stettnichs as councilman,who moved away.
Lt. Mary Dunn is spending a few days in the parental John Dunn home.
40 Years Ago – 1981
Mrs. Paul Keleher, nee Catharine Woods, passed away recently with burial in Denver. CO June 9th.
Debby Hagey, Rhonda Goth and Jody Moser returned home after a 15 day trip visiting relatives and friends in Phoenix, AZ and San Diego, CA.
Tom Schreier and Richard Seggerman attended the American Legion Boys’State at Camp Dodge June 6-12.
35 Years Ago – 1986
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Delaney are the proud parents of an 8 lb. 2 oz. son, named Patrick James, born May 28th. He has a brother and a sister at home.
James Glackin, cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, has been named to the Dean’s list for the 6th consecutive semester. He is in the top 5% of his class.
Mrs. Vivian Morton attended the Alumni banquet at Early May 24th and spent the weekend there and attended a family picnic dinner.
30 Years Ago – 1991
Jon and Doris Mitts and Keith and Dorothy Benton were honored at a retirement reception hosted by the Marcus and Meriden-Cleghorn school districts.
Pamela Grauer was selected as the recipient of the 1991 R.N. Administrator’s Award for Excellence in Nursing at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Medical Center. She has been employed there for the past two years.
Karen Sue Briggs, a 1978 graduate of Marcus Community High School, and Joseph A. Jurasic, former Denver resident, are planning a November 16th wedding in Scottsdale, AZ. Both are employed in Phoenix, AZ.
25 Years Ago – 1996
The Marcus Merchants softball team defeated Havelock 8-2 with Brian Nelson pitching.Troy Gravenish, Andy Cazett and Nate Nelson all hit homers for the home team.
Forty-seven people attended the 48th annual Miller reunion held at the Marcus Park.
Nancy Busch returned home after a 12 day trip to London and Paris. She acompanied a group of Global Plus Students from Westmar. They rode the Eurostar Chunnel from London to Paris.
Donna Hansen, Chad Miller and Ann Mayer, all of Marcus were named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.
20 Years Ago – 2001
Oliver and Jen (Van Den Berg) Hohbach will be honored at an open reception in the Marcus Hawkeye Saturday, June 16. They were married April 28, 2001 in Sioux Falls, SD.
Local gal, Shiuvaunne Booth, participated in the NAIA National Women’s Golf tournament in London, KY. She placed 7th overall and won honors as an All American for the third consecutive year.
Sixty descendants of the Louis and Deborah Means Hazen family gathered at the Lee and Becky Meyer farm near Alta for their third annual reunion. They decided to meet every two years.
