105 Years Ago -1920
J.W. Nield was elected president of the Marcus Commercial Club at the annual meeting held in the Burke Cafe on Monday evening.
The announcement that R.J. Pattison will open a dairy in Marcus on February 1 will be most welcome news to the people of this city. A near milk famine has been the existing condition in Marcus for some time.
Ben Delaney loaded a car of household goods this week to ship to his new home in Adrian, Minnesota.
The Swedish Lutheran congregation is making plans to remodel and modernize the parsonage. The building will be raised to two stories and otherwise improved.
J.W. Nield of Marcus was elected secretary of the Cherokee County Mutual Insurance company at a meeting of directors held in this city Friday afternoon.
100 Years Ago – 1925
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Glade, parents of Mrs. John Dorr of Marcus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Ocheyedan Sunday.
The modern residence of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Abels in the east part of the city was badly damaged by fire Saturday afternoon and it is believed to have been caused by defective wiring.
Invitations have been issued this week by Seba Lodge No. 463 A.F. & A.M. to lodges in northwest to attended the school of instruction here January 27 and 28.
About thirty neighbors and friends of the J.A. Brownmiller family surprised Gerald and Cyril Brownmiller on Friday evening. The occasion was to celebrate the boys birthday anniversary.
Mr. & Mrs. Carl Kuehn are the parents of a daughter born Thursday, January 14.

Mrs. E. Cowan celebrated her 90th birthday in the home of her daughter Mrs. J.W. Mitchell on New Years day.
Mrs. A.E. Wilson died at her home in Amherst township Friday January 2 following a brief illness.
Earl Lundgren had a serious accident Saturday evening while returning from Cleghorn with his team hitched to a bob sled. The team ran away, knocking Mr. Lundgren unconscious and badly cutting up his face.
School reopened Monday after the holiday vacation and the bus drivers are having considerable difficulty in making their rounds becuase of bad roads. They go as far as possible and then return to town.

Ralph Rober, 49 year old printer at the News Office, passed away Tuesday night after an illness of a few hours.
Mr. & Mrs. Albin Hanson are the parents of a daughter Colleen Ann, born January 10.
Lovell Simons, Amherst township farmer, recently purchased and improved forty acre farm in Amherst township from Mrs. Charles Brown for about $135 per acre.
85 Years Ago -1940
Leo Trapp of Cleghorn has filed entry with Bill Brown, WHO Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament to be held in the Des Moines Coliseum January 24-26 and February 12.
Champions at the amateur tournament will be awarded boxing equipment and free trips to Chicago according to Mr. Brown.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Yoder entertained the members of the basketball team of Marcus High School at dinner Wednesday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Marion Bird are the proud parents of a son born last Thursday evening January 18.
Mrs. Alfred Brandt is recovering at her home following an operation at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars about two weeks ago.
Miss Eleanore Reed resumed her studies at the Sioux City Academy Beauty School after visiting several days in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reed.
Farmers in Marcus and Amherst townships have sealed over 200,000 bushels of corn up to Wednesday evening it is reported by Fred Mossmann.
Alred Polson will hold a public sale on the Gund Farm one mile east of Marcus January 16, beginning at one o’clock.
80 Years Ago – 1945
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Gordon of Meriden were guests of honor Wednesday, January 17 when relatives and friends honored them on their 25th wedding anniversary at the Municipal Hall.
Friday, January 19 the Eagles traveled to Larrabee where they handed the Larrabee five a 35-31 defeat. So far this season the Eagles have won five games and lost one.
Word has been received of the death of Dr. W. P. Roberts of Sioux Falls, SD who passed away January 12. He had been a physician and surgeon in Sioux Falls for 38 years. Before moving to South Dakota, he resided in Cleghorn where he practiced for nearly ten years.
The Cleghorn sportsmen have been enjoyed some good fox hunts the past two weeks, bagging three foxes and two wolves so far.
J.W. Nield left Saturday morning for Menlo Park, California to spend several weeks with his son, James and family.
Joe Hey Jr. has accepted a position in the Man Power Commision office at Sioux City. He started his duties Tuesday morning.

A number of people from the Marcus community attended the funeral service of Arthur Kohn, 45, of the Maryhill community Tuesday morning in the Visitation Church there.
Along with the other incumbent officers, Oscar Heline of Marcus was re-elected to the office of president of the Farmers Grain Dearlers Association of Iowa at its annual meeting being held in Des Moines this week.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Farlow were pleasantly surprised Sunday when a group of relatives gathered in their home to help celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
A group of relatives and friends gathered in the home of Henry Dorr, Sr. to honor him on his 80th birthday anniversary Saturday.
Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell entertained at dinner Sunday in honor of their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Howard McConnell, on her birthday anniversary.

Ben Delany, 77, a resident of this community since 1882 died Saturday morning January 22 a victim of a heart attack.
Climaxing the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scout movement in America, which is to be celebrated the week of February 6 to 13, the Eagle Scouts of the Prairie Gold Council and their parents, will be the guests of Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Sunday afternoon February 13 at an Eagle Recognition ceremony.
An open house honoring Mr. & Mrs. Forrest Burch of Meriden on their 25th wedding anniversary will be held at their home Sunday, January 30.
Frank Booth, 49, and his son Dale 26, both of Cherokee were killed Friday, January 21 when their plane crashed in a farm field seven miles southwest of Cushing.
A group of relatives and friends gathered in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Walter Garlow Saturday evening to honor or them on their 30th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Harry baumgardner, 63, a lifelong resident of Marcus passed away Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars after a long illness.
The annual meeting of the Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance Association will be held Thursday, February 11. This meeting will mark the association 75th year of operation and its officials are planning a special observation of the occasion.
Mr. & Mrs. Leo Brady are the parents of a son born Thursday, January 21.
Thomas Meehan, 97, a resident of the Marcus community since 1886 died Saturday, January 28 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Herbert Hueser northeast of Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. William Roethler will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Monday, February 1 with open house in their home.
60 Years Ago -1965
Luther Miller of Marcus will received a 50 year cap from the Scottish Rites Bodies at a presentation February 4 at Sioux City. He will be recognized with a life membership.
Mr. & Mrs. Harlan Klingbeil are the parents of a baby girl born Friday, January 22 at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City.
Mr. & Mrs. Willie Irwin of Grand Meadow observe their ruby anniversary Sunday, January 24 having reached their 40th wedding anniversary on January 21.
Lawrence Rupp who farms two miles southeast of Marcus, bought the Mrs. Bill Horstman farm east of town, which was sold Saturday at auction. Lawrence paid $490 an acre for the well improved 80 acres.
A better than average group turned out last Thursday evening for the annual meeting of Greater Marcus, Inc. The organization which operates the Marcus Theatre. The group heard treasurer, Charles Addy report that the theatre, after two years of meager profits went into the red the past year

Berger Samuelson, 82, who had lived in Cherokee the past two months died there after a short illness on Wednesday, January 14.
Mrs. Arley Schmillen, 62, of Cherokee died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City following a ten day illness caused by an accidental fall.
The basement of the Marcus Chick ‘n Feed, where there was an old bowling alley, will be the setting for the new Youth Center. The inside needs fixing but the teenagers will be able to decorate it themselves with murals, posters and other projects.
Mr. & Mrs. Joe Alesch Sr. will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Monday, January 26.
Mr. & Mrs. Kent Erickson are the parents of their first child, a son, born Tuesday, January 20 at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
50 Years Ago -1975
Carl Kuehn passed away suddenly at his home in Marcus on January 16 having reached the age of 75 years 9 months and 29 days.
Floyd Gifford, 68, of Marcus was declared dead January 15 after arrival at a hospital in Cherokee.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Mayer are the parents of a baby girl on Thursday, January 16.
The Marcus Jaycees will present a thrilling evening of “Donkey Ball” on Sunday, February 9 at the high school gymnasium.
Mr. & Mrs. William Orwin of rural Pierson were honored on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
45 Years Ago – 1980
Mrs. Andrew Ballard, 67, of Marcus died Wednesday in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee of a long illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Gary Rupp of Washta are the proud parents of a baby girl born January 16.
The Northwest Iowa Choral Association will sponsor its 20th annual Northwest Iowa Choral Festival at Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday, January 26. Taking part in the day’s activities from the Marcus High School will be Paula Theisen, Dawn Klingensmith, Mark Hohbach and John Deichman. Paul holstein vocal director at the school is a member of the Northwest Iowa Choral Association.
Mrs. Jep Juhl, 92, died Friday in the Colonial Manor Nursing home at Columbus Junction, Iowa.
Dr. Ralph Edgar Simonsen, 80 of Cherokee, Iowa died Tuesday in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for six months.
