110 Years Ago – 1914
Fifteen hitching post were today placed along the west of the Marcus Cooperative Company store.
A son was born Thursday, November 12 to Mr. & Mrs. Will Fechter.
Leona Lawhead was given a happy surprise in her home last Friday afternoon when her girl friends helped her celebrate her birthday.
After a two year illness of diabetes, Cyril Nafzigger son of Dr. and Mrs. Nafzigger, died Sunday, December 6 at the home of his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. I.C. Thompson.
Mr. & Mrs. Reinhardt Olson surprised their son Elmer on Thanksgiving day by inviting 16 of his little friends and schoolmates to help him celebrate his 11th birthday.
The ten cent lunch served by St. Ann’s Guild in the Dan Collins building Tuesday afternoon was well attended the receipts amounting to $45.00.
105 Years Ago -1919
Mrs. Elizabeth Dorr was made very happy this week when she received a letter form her sister in Germany, the first which she had received since American’s entrance into the war. The letter painted a very gray picture of life in Germany in the post war days but no reference was made to the privation and suffering which the German people underwent during the war. The letter stated that the people were greatly in need of almost everything in the food and clothing line and that if they had money they could not be bought.
Little Marjorie Swanson of Cleghorn was hostess to 14 of her friends on Wednesday, the occasion being her 4th birthday.
Ben Delaney, one time postmaster of Marcus but later a successful farmer, has decided to leave this community where he has lived since a boy. Mr. Delaney some time ago purchased a farm near Adrian, Minnesota and will move his family there next spring.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Work was started Monday morning for improvements at the Peters Brothers garage and the office will now have a floor space at 25 x 50 foot.
Last Saturday was one of the most ideal days ever remembered for that season in Iowa. Shirt sleeves were in evidence and wraps discarded. It was one of the warmest days in autumn drivers even picked the shady side of the street. Even more remarkable than this is the fact the J.B. Boss picked from his garden a branch of ripe raspberries, the second crop of the season.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hendrickson announce the birth of a son Friday, November 7.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Frank Bierman Monday, November 17, a son.
Mr. & Mrs. Mike Galles are the parents of a son born to them Thursday. November 13.
95 Years Ago -1929
Mr. & Mrs. Herman Johnson and daughter of Dubuque are visiting with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Johnson west of Marcus.
Miss Lulu Tregoning who is doing extension work out of Ames, visited the home folks over the weekend.
In the last game of the season, Marcus was defeated by the Holstein team 14-6.
Miss Genevieve Brown has resigned her position in the L.J. McGivern office to accept work with the Provident Loan Association in Sioux City. Miss Jessie Blend of Harris will succeed Miss Brown.
J.P. Ament left Wednesday morning for Toledo, Ohio where he will spend about two days going through the Willys Overland factory and will then drive a new Willys Six home.
85 Years Ago -1939
Ellis Geister is in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars with a back injury which required placing him in a cast due to a fall from a scaffold.
Fred Missman was pleasantly surprised Saturday evening when a group of neighbors and friends arrived to celebrate his birthday.
Walter Miller, 45, passed away in his home Tuesday evening following an illness of several months.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a fuel shed on the John Apel property Friday morning. The building was up in flames before the fire department arrived and could not be saved.
A “shingling bee” was held Friday and Saturday on the George Rosch farm south of town.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Danile Smith, 77, a resident of Marcus 46 years, passed away Wednesday morning November 22 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, from a stroke which he suffered November 13.
M. Frances Meylor RN has received the appointment of 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps.
S 1/C and Mrs. Ray Gates are the parents of a daughter born to them Sunday morning November 26 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Oscar Johnson received word last week that his brother, Elmer Johnson, 60 year old, passed away suddenly Friday, November 10 due to a heart attack. Burial was at Castor Alberta, Canada.
Relatives and friends called on J.W. Nield Monday, November 27 in observance of his 84th birthday.
Born to Sgt. and Mrs. William Pedersen, a daughter at the Sacred heart Hospital in LeMars Friday morning, November 24.
75 Years Ago -1949
Raymond Schnoes, eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed Schnoes of Marcus, graduated from an advanced technology course at Radio City, New York last Tuesday.
John Holmes was presented a 50 year jewel by his fellow lodge members at a special ceremony Tuesday evening at a special meeting of the IOOF.
Relatives and friends surprised Mrs. Charley Anderson on her 76th birthday anniversary last Sunday afternoon.
Mr. & Mrs. Ambrose Heinis of Peterson, formerly of Marcus, were pleasantly surprised last Tuesday evening when a group of relatives and friends called to honor them at a joint housewarming and birthday party.
The students of Holy Name high school will hold their annual festival on Sunday evening December 11. A ham supper will be served in the church parlors.

Open house for the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Emil Anderson will be held in Bethlehem Lutheran Church parlors in Cherokee on Sunday, December 12.
Mrs. John Toomy, 88, a former resident of Marcus passed away November 25 in a Sioux Falls hospital.
Word was received late Thursday by relatives of Cyril Brady whose death occurred at Portland, Oregon. Mr. Brady was a former Marcus resident.
The work of Miss Bertha Underberg, former Marcus resident, has a national wide contest sponsored by the National Thanksgiving Association.
Jens Carl Petersen, 68, a farmer in this community for many years passed away early last Saturday morning at the Dill Nursing Home in Marcus.

Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Meehan of Des Moines are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, November 29.
Eight young people from all over the free world spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Marcus, staying in the homes of a number of families and meeting many other Marcus people. They are all students at colleges and universities in the area in the United States to further their education.
Mrs. Amanda Digel, 69, died Friday November 27 in Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Mr. & Mrs. Cletus Gravenish of Pierson are the parents of a daughter born Monday, November 23 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
Carl Baertling, 65, a resident of this community nearly all of his life, was found dead Friday at the home of his sister Mrs., Samuel Matson at Paullina.

Tyrone Artz, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ted Artz, received his degree and certificate at commencement exercises on Wednesday at the Armory of Iowa State University of Science and Technology at Ames.
Graveside service were held Saturday morning November 28 at the Liberty Township cemetery for Peter Anderson, 83, who passed away Friday at the Dill Custodial Home in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Fred Mossman observed their 60th wedding anniversary on November 23.
Rev. and Mrs. Robert Meyer are parents of daughter born November 25 at the Lutheran Mission, Orela Station, Wabag, New Guinea.
Mr. & Mrs. W.T. Ament were honored at several dinners and parties last week in observance of their 45th wedding anniversary.

Otto Jorgensen, 83, of Marcus died Tuesday afternoon at the Happy Siesta Retirement home in Remsen.
Mr. & Mrs. Jim Harmon announce the arrival of a daughter born Monday, November 24 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee.
Mrs. Paul Treinen, 57, of Sioux Falls passed away Thursday, November 27 after a lingering illness. She was a former resident of Remsen.
Chuck Simons of Marcus has added another trophy to his collection. His angus was named bread champion at the International Livestock Show in Chicago.
Sharon Lay Larson, 16, of rural Washta was killed Saturday evening when the car in which she was riding overturned on a country road near Washta.
Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Kobs of Anthon announce the arrival of their first child born Saturday, November 29.
50 Years Ago -1974
Patty Schulte has been awarded Toy National Bank’s scholarship for 1974-75 in the amount of $500. Mrs. Schulte is a senior at Briar Cliff College, majoring in sociology. Her parents are Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Theisen of Marcus.
Mrs. Gerald Pallesen, 47 of Marcus died November 30, at her home after a two year illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Miller are parents of their first child a daughter, born Wednesday. November 20.
Frank Kass, 85, of Remsen, died Monday, December 2 at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars after a lingering illness
Clara Wendt, 88 of Remsen, died November 27 at a retirement home.
Mr. & Mrs. Dennis Hicks of Fort Dodge became parents of a baby boy born November 12 at West Trinity Hospital, Fort Dodge.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Emil Anderson, long time are residents will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, December 9 with an open house at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cherokee.
Ambrose Heines will celebrate his 90th birthday on December 5 at Hilltop Manor in Cherokee where he is recovering from a heart attack.
The Marcus Eaglettes opened their 1979-80 basketball season with a 68-57 loss to Albert City Truesdale in the Holstein clinic. Leading scorer for Marcus was Bobbi Schmillen with 34 points. Other shooters from the Eaglettes were Roxanne Schmillen with 19 points and Paul Knudson with 4.
