MMCRU suffers narrow loss to HMS

MMCRU battled with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn through four sets October 15 at Hartley. HMS won the War Eagle Conference match 3-1 but that doesn’t tell the whole story. The Royals captured the first set 25-19 and were in position to win each of the next three. The Hawks ended up taking them 25-21, 25-23 and 31-29. With the loss MMCRU wrapped up Conference play in ninth place with a 2-8 mark. The Royals entered Monday night’s home Class 2A Region 7 tournament match against Lawton-Bronson with a 7-14 season record.
The visitors got off to a good start in the match, taking an early 4-1 lead. They later led 12-5 and 21-12 on the way to the first set win. MMCRU was ahead 14-9 in set two before the score tightened up. The set was knotted at 20-20 but the Hawks eventually claimed it to tie the match 1-1.
HMS carried its closing momentum into the third set, moving out to a 6-0 advantage. The Royals came back to tie the set at 15-15. They took a 20-17 lead before the Hawks won eight of the final 11 points to seize the set and move in front 2-1 in the match.
MMCRU led set four up to the point it was tied at 11-11. No more than two points then separated the teams until the Royals went ahead by three at 22-19. The set was tied at 22-22 and neither team led by more than a point until HMS scored the final two points of the set to win the match.
