110 Years Ago – 1914
Mrs. Ira Donlin Zimmerman passed away Saturday night after giving birth to a baby girl. Mrs. Zimmerman, was only 19 years of age and had been married only one year. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon.
A fire alarm was turned in from the George Tutt home Sunday evening but the fire was put out before the company arrived. Mrs. Tutt was generating the gasoline stove when a bottle of wood alcohol exploded. She received burns on her hands and her hair was singed but she escaped luckily.
Miss Brady left Friday for Hamford where she has a position in the public school.
Charles Quirin left today with fourteen head of Percheron horses which he will exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair, SD State Fair at Huron and the Inter State Fair at Sioux City.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Johnson last week twin boys.
100 Years Ago – 1924
This is one story that the Marcus has first hand information as to details. On Friday morning, Miss Genevieve Foley, daughter of John Foley caused a sensation on Main Street when her Ford crashed into the plate glass window of the News office.
Mrs. A.J. Thompson was very unfortunate Wednesday when she lost a diamond settling valued at $150.
Mrs. Earl Gill received serious injuries at Havelock Sunday when the car in which she was riding and driven by her husband was struck by a large automobile. The car in which she was riding as completely wrecked. Mrs. Gill had her chest crushed, collar bone broken and face badly lacerated. The elder Mrs. Gill also in the car suffered a broken collar bone and one of her ears was nearly severed. Mr. Gill and their small son Wilfred miraculously escaped injury.
S.M. Wixcel returned last Friday from Des Moines where he was an interested spectator at Iowa’s great fair.
95 Years Ago -1929
The ever popular George Sweet players will be in Marcus, September 9-11. George has made every effort to make this the best season yet.
Stuart Dorr, son of Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Dorr, departed Monday for St. Paul, Minnesota where he entered the Concordia College.
Elizabeth Dorr, Lourene Collins, Katheryn Collins, and Marie Flanagan enjoyed a weekend outing at Lake Okoboji.
Raymond Delaney Departed Thursday from Detroit, Michigan, where he will resume the study of medicine in the University of Detroit after spending the summer with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Delaney.
The News will issue a special edition next week in recognition of the Pilot rock plowing match, an annual fall fair event in Cherokee County.
85 Years Ago -1939
A birthday dinner was given Sunday in honor of J.H. Smith who celebrated his 83rd birthday at the Carl Shafer home.
G.M. Lampley, business manager completed arrangement this week to bring the D-X Ford Tri-Motor 16 passenger airplane to Marcus on September 5. The plane is brought to Marcus through an arrangement with Mr. Patterson, local D-X dealer, and a group of local merchants who will furnish courtesy tickets to customers and friends.
The Marcus Boy Scouts Troops No 52 went to Lake Okoboji Saturday afternoon for a camping trip and came back Sunday afternoon. They were accompanied by Scoutmaster Loren Dorr and Hi Wheeler. Nine boys made the trip.
Over 70 relatives and friends invaded the spacious country home of Mr. & Mrs. L.O. Geister Friday evening to remind them it was their twentieth wedding anniversary.
Superintendent Harold Wood announced that three courses of study will again be offered this year. Normal training, commercial and General, giving the students a wide choice of subjects.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Goodburn observed their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday evening August 20 at the Methodist Church with a re-enactment of the wedding ceremony preceding a three course dinner in the church dining hall.
Funeral services for Oscar Challman were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Nelson Funeral Home in Marcus. Mr. Challman passed away at the Scared Heart Hospital at the age of 66 after a long illness.
Joyce Woodall, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Woodall, will be crowned “Miss Marcus” Wednesday evening August 30, the first evening of the Industrial Livestock Show.
Mrs. Paul Dalpes and sons left on Monday morning for their home in Phoenix, AZ after spending the past five weeks at the home of Mrs. Dalpes parents, Mr. & Mrs. M.A. Garvin. Enroute home they will spend several days at Denver, CO with relatives.
Wings and a Prayer showing at the Lyric Sunday thru Wednesday.
In a free hitting contest the Marcus Baseball team beat the Maryhill team 12-9 at Marcus last Sunday.
75 Years Ago -1949
Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 9 o’clock in holy Name Church for William Pluhatorek, 70, who died Tuesday morning at his home
An anniversary party honoring Mr. & Mrs. John Johnson of Paullina on their 55th wedding anniversary was held Sunday in the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Wilcox in Marcus.
Funeral Services were held Friday afternoon in Omaha Nebraska for Miss Mary Larsen, 37, who died on Tuesday, August 23 in Omaha.
The Sands Seed Service team of Marcus finished its season Wednesday evening with a surprising 11 to 3 victory over Barger Brother of Sioux City in the finals of the Marcus softball tournament.
Mr. & Mrs. Guido Berendes of Remsen and Mr. & Mrs. Leo Bird returned home Saturday from their trip west. They went north of Canada and then west to San Francisco covering 5,000 miles in the eleven days.
Wendell Grauer has moved his radio service into the C.W. Dorr building across from Hey’s leather shop, and added a number of new lines to his stock.
70 Years Ago -1954
The Marcus Public School opened Monday morning with a total enrollment of 351. 265 in the elementary grades and 86 in high school.
Hartley will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee on Thursday and Friday September 9 and 10.
Marlene Hueser, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Hueser of Marcus was a member of the class of 54 young ladies who were graduated last week from the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of nursing.
Mrs. Harry Nelson entertained eighteen little guests at a birthday party Thursday afternoon August 19 in honor of her daughter Lynn’s seventh birthday.
Sharon Delaney, who has been a guest in the John Delaney home left Tuesday evening for Detroit, Michigan where she will enter nurses training at Mt. Carmel Hospital.

The Marcus Cooperative Locker Association will soon become a thing of the past according to a decision made by the concern’s shareholders at its annual meeting Monday evening.
The sale of the J & D Cafe in Marcus to Mr. & Mrs. Lovell Roberson was announced this week.
Mr. & Mrs. Harvey “Dutch” Geibe, Jr. of Paullina announced the arrival of a son born Saturday, August 22.
In a business transaction completed Tuesday, the Evans Clothing company, one of Marcus oldest businesses was purchased by Harold Boots.
Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Carey of Cherokee are parents of a daughter born Monday, August 17.

Thomas Fenton, 36 formerly of Marcus, but who had lived at Estherville for several years, died last Saturday at a Rochester hospital after several weeks illness.
Joyce Seggerman, twelve year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Harm Seggerman Jr. passed away Thursday evening at the home of her parents of rural Marcus after a lingering illness since birth.
Doug Simons, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lee Simons put Marcus on the map in a big way last week by showing the grand champion baby beef at the Iowa State Fair.
Paul Mayer of Marcus was named to the Dean’s list of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Dakota for the second semester of the past school year.
Francis Polson received his Bachelor of Arts degree with Cum Laude honors from Westmar College, LeMars during the commencement exercises held August 14.

Paul Klingbeil, 76, of Remsen and widely known farmer, died Saturday, August 23 at Floyd Valley hospital in LeMars where he had been a patient for three months.
Mrs. Herman Fischer received a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the Westmar College graduation exercises College graduation exercises Saturday, August 23.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Kerr of Indianola are the parents of a daughter born Friday, August 15.
Mrs. Helen Raveling was hostess at a picnic supper Sunday evening honoring Mrs. Ben Delaney on her 93rd birthday.
Chuck Ogren showed the grand champion at Tuesday’s baby beef show at the Marcus Fair. Chuck is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Ogren of Marcus and showed the top senior Herford.

Mr. & Mrs. Carl Heesech celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, August 21.
Susana Cardenas from Quito Equador arrived Sunday and will be making her home with Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Pallesen for a year.
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Goodburn hosted a pre-anniversary dinner in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary at the Amber Inn in LeMars Friday, August 16.
Mrs., William Collins was entertained at a dinner in Cherokee on Sunday by members of her family in honor of her 80th birthday.
Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Wurth of Plateville, Wisconsin are the parents of a girl born, August 22.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Debbie Hohbach, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Hohbach of Cleghorn gave her educational presentation on a nutritional breakfast, “Good Morning” at the Iowa State Fair last week Tuesday. She received the merit award for this presentation.
Paul and Donna Puhrmann of Cleghorn became parents of a baby born August 26 in SVMH in Cherokee.
Kenneth Ogren, cashier at Farmers State Bank, Marcus, was awarded a diploma at the commencement exercises of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin, Madison on Friday evening.
Hesse Chevrolet announces the addition to their facility of a 50 x50 foot complete car service center. According to owner Marvin Hesse, the new structure will be complete and ready for operation in the late fall.
Mr. & Mrs. Ron Henke announce the birth of a baby girl on August 17 at Marian health Center, St. Joseph Unit in Sioux City.
