Marcus Cooking School

The Marcus Fair Cooking School is excited to have Ron Halverson, from Cherokee as the 2024 featured cook. Ron and his wife Dondee, were kindergarten sweethearts. They have 3 grown children, and five grandchildren. Ron has been in the insurance industry for 23 years and Dondee is a nurse. Ron’s hobbies consist of hunting, fishing, golf, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and of course Caitlin Clark. One of his greatest passions is making all kinds of foods. He also boasts that in 41 years, Dondee has never made one single meal! (What??)
Ron’s grandmother and mother, who not surprisingly were excellent cooks, inspired his passion for cooking. The words lard and lots of butter were all you needed to know. Ron loves homestyle cooking from potatoes, vegetables, all kinds of meat, desserts and one of his most favorite foods SUSHI! His grandchildren think Ron’s mashed potatoes and pancakes are the BEST in the world! His cheesecakes and fruit pizza are requested a lot, and he loves making good desserts.
Fairgoers can expect to see 3 easy desserts that do not take a lot of time or energy and can incorporate the children or grandchildren and have fun in the kitchen. His grandchildren enjoy helping grandpa while jamming out to 80’s rock music, helping stir or pour items and licking the utensils. Ron says it is one of the best ways to incorporate teaching, learning and having some real family time fun!
The Marcus Fair Cooking School is on Sunday August 11at noon in the Hall of Progress. See you then!
