110 Years Ago – 1914
The home of Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Simons has been thrust into deepest sorrow by the death of their promising young son, Ralph who died Tuesday after after an illness of a month. He was thirteen years old.
Miss Eliza Hully has resigned her position as day operator in the telephone office. Miss Hully held the position for two years and patrons will miss her gentle “hello” over the wire.
Nic Geringer was the victim of a painful accident the first of last week. While at work on his new barn, he fell from a scaffold, his hand striking a rust nail, which ran into the palm of the hand to a depth of an inch and a half.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Ben Knudson a boy, May 27.
105 Years Ago -1919
Merle French arrived Sunday morning from his years work as a student in the medical department of the State University at Iowa City. He expects to spend the summer at home.
While watching a game of baseball last Sunday, Cyril Delaney was struck in the fave by a ball. His nose was broken and his eye slightly injured. Cyril is a son of Ben Delaney.
The little son of Mr. & Mrs. M.J. Kelly was seriously ill the later part of the week with pneumonia. A trained nurse was in attendance.
Henry and Will Wendt left Sunday evening for Marshalltown in response to a message announcing the death of their father.
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Radcliffe are the parents of a son born to them on Sunday, June 15.
100 Years Ago – 1924
Vernon Pattison who until recently held a position in the bank of Marcus has accepted a teller’s position in the Farmers National Bank at Red Oak, Cally Ellis, formerly of Marcus is vice president for the bank.
Hugh Riley died at St. Vincent Hospital, Sioux City on Friday following a lingering illness over five years.
Funeral Services for James Ryan were held in the Holy Name Church Monday morning.
One of the worst storms in the history of Marcus since the tornado of June 14, 1885 hit the town last Saturday night about nine o’clock on the 39th wedding anniversary of the previous storm. Robert Porter Jr. who tried to brave the gale tipped over in his auto resulting in the destruction of the car but fortunately he was unhurt. The top of Fred Mossman’s car was ripped off; the ball park amphi-theatre was unroofed; and Bryon Vaughan’s porch was torn from his house. Trees were torn up by their roots in every part of town.
Mr. & Mrs. Merle Cave are the parents of a daughter.
95 Years Ago -1929
A baby girl was born Thursday, June 7 to Mr. & Mrs. Carl Anderson.
The first open air concert of the Marcus Municipal band on Main Street Saturday was heard by hundreds of people who appreciated to the fullest extent the fine concert which the band boys gave.
A large attendance of former graduates of Marcus high school is expected at the annual meeting and banquet to be held Friday night at the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Frank Barnes, prominent Marcus citizen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F.E. Paine, June 10 following an illness of several months.
85 Years Ago -1939
Paul Ament returned Saturday from Des Moines where he had attended Boys State. Pal became the head of the Federal Party organization representing Cherokee county, was elected a delegate to the state convention and was also state representative from this community.
Miss Mary Garvin was complimented at a seven o’clock buffet dinner given by Mr. & Mrs. Jim Gabel of Kingsley last Sunday evening.
Mr. & Mrs. Tony Garvin departed Tuesday by train for Chicago. From there they will attend the New York World’s Fair and visit Mr. & Mrs. Bernard Garvin at Toledo, Ontario, Canada
Possession will be given March 1 on two farms sold last week in this territory. Herman Hueser bought the farm east of the Hoxsie center from John Berendes and Guildo Berendes purchased the Tom Miller farm over the line in Plymouth county.
Fire of uncertain origin destroyed a barn 64×70 with 26 foot posts on the George Rosch farm about five miles south and two east of Marcus.
80 Years Ago – 1944
Leo Brady, 25 years old son of Mr. & Mrs. James Brady of Marcus has been promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Signal corps at Drew Field, FL where he is stationed in the Aircraft Warning Unit Center.
Reports from the bond selling agencies of the county for the first three days of the week, first three days of the drive, indicate buying interest well up to expectation.
Pvt. Lee Simons arrived from Camp Blanding, FL to spend a furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lowell Simons.
Mrs. James Delaney and children and Miss Florence Anderson left on extended visit in the home of Mrs. Delaney’s parents.
Gifts for Father’s days advertised at Wagner Cash Store were ties 50 cents, to 98 cents, Dress shirts, $1.49-$2.50, dress sox, 25 to 49 cents and dress oxfords, $3.95 to $5.50.
70 Years Ago -1954
Services for Henry Rupp of Cherokee, a former Cleghorn farmer, were held Friday from Immaculate conception Church in Cherokee, Mr. Rupp 67, died suddenly while visiting in the home of his son Cletus in Oregon.
Doris Ney ofGranville has accepted a position with the Earl Davis bookkeeping firm here. Miss Ney fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Pauline Witter, who will be employed as bookkeeper at the Marcus Lumber Company.
Leo Bird, 55 of Marcus, died early Tuesday afternoon at his home here after an extended illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Otto Frangenberg are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, June 8 in the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars.
65 Years Ago -1959
Albert Kinzel 66 of Cherokee, died Thursday morning June 4 as a result of several head injuries received in a fall the proceeding day.
John Ryan, 72 a former resident of Marcus, died Sunday afternoon at a Sioux City hospital.
DeWayne “Red” Schott coming here from Elgin, IL has accepted a position as watchmaker at the Nieman Jewelry here.
Two veteran Iowa pastors are among ten clergymen who will be honored at the synod of the Augustana Lutheran Church June 18. at Hartford, Connecticut. The Iowans are Dr. Emil Bergren of Blakesburg and the Rev. Carl Samuelson of Marcus.
Roy Williams, 73 former resident of Marcus, passed away at this home in California Wednesday.
60 Years Ago -1964
Gary Wallin left for Iowa City Sunday to participate in a summer science program at the State University of Iowa. Gary, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Wallin of Marcus, was one of 60 out of a field of 800 applicants to receive the grant.
Mr. & Mrs. Russell Runnings celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, May 31 at the home of their daughter Mr. & Mrs. Darwin Fredrickson with an open house.
The Marcus Fire Department was called to the Mike Slota farm shortly after six Sunday evening when the straw banked around his supply tank caught on fire.
Father Robert McClintock celebrated his first Solem High Mass Tuesday, June 2 at 10 am at Holy Name Church.
55 Years Ago -1969
Les Fischer of Calumet, who has represented the Moorman Feed Company in this area for many years, has announced he is resigning and will move to Western Montana. He will be a cattle order buyer. Glenn Peterson will be the new Moorman representative here.
Brad Miller was among 16 athletes presented with track awards for the 1969 season at South Dakota State University in Brookings.
Mrs Albert Hohbach, 66, passed away Wednesday, June 11 at a Cherokee hospital after a three week illness.
Mr. & Mrs. Don Dix of Washta are the parents of their first child, a daughter born Wednesday, Jun e4, 1969 at St. Luke’s West Hospital in Sioux City.
Open house will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Marcus Cafe to give the people of the area a special opportunity to inspect the local business and to try its service.
Mr. & Mrs. John Moore have operated the cafe for the past year and during a past few weeks it has undergone a complete remodeling job.

Mr. & Mrs. Dave Kruckman of Pensacola are proud parents of a daughter born June 2.
“The Last American Hero,” a racing car film about a North Carolina hillbilly who becomes a stock car champion, will be shown at the Marland this weekend.
The Marcus Federated Garden Club held their 40th Annual Flower Show June 7 in the Municipal ?Building.
Jane Bird , daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bird, has been named to the dean’s list at Briar Cliff.
45 Years Ago – 1979
Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Treinen of Remsen will observe their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday June 24.
Mark Kunkel, son of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Kunkel of rural Remsen sustained a compound fracture and abrasions to his arm Saturday morning when he was caught in an overhead elevator in a corn crib on the farm of Weldon Ohlendorf Sr.
Lyle McQueen Birch, 68 of Grandview Washington, a former resident of Cleghorn, died Thursday, June 7, 1979 in Grandview after a lengthy illness.
The MarcEttes undertook, as a community project, the placing of indoor-outdoor carpeting around the wading pool at the Marcus swimming pool.
