100 Years Ago – 1924
A record attendance of 71 attended the booster club banquet Tuesday evening, which was an enthusiastic beginning of the work for the town during the year 1924.
Dr. F.J. Hipschen will know Marcus veterinarian died in the hospital Monday.
A.V. Jensen will be toastmaster at the father and son banquet held at the Methodist Church, January 29.
The local school has arranged for a series of 15 minute talks to be given each Friday afternoon before the assembly by business and professional men in Marcus.
The mail carriers found it impossible to travel Monday because of snow-blocked roads.
Slight relief from the cold wave which sent the thermometers down as low as 32 degrees below zero was felt here. This was the coldest weather experienced in this locality for many years.

Mrs. Edna Abels passed away at Long Beach, CA after an illness of tow years.
The county Red Cross has 655 members, 200 of who are on the Marcus rail.

Walter Barnes passed away on Tuesday morning at his home here after bring in ill health for three years.
Members of the ticket committee report ticket sales good for the card party which will be held on Monday evening in the Legion building as part of the national campaign infantile paralysis.
A daughter was born January 18 to Dr. & Mrs. G.A. Wiedemeier at the Carroll hospital.

Mrs. Anthony Garvin, 79, passed away early Tuesday morning January 18, 1944 following an illness of tow weeks.
Diane Enneking, 17, month old twin daughter of M. & Mrs. Ben Enneking suffered an injured finger when a glass smoking tray fell from a stand and hit her third finger of her left hand, nearly severing the injured member to the first joint.
Forrest Marshall and crew have completed an interior paint job at the George Pharmacy.
Wordhas been received stating that Lt. Francis Brady, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Brady, has been awarded the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster.
The Marcus High School will meet the strong Larrabee team here in a double header Tuesday night.

Because of low water and oxygen deficiencies which indicates serious winter fish loss in 17 northwest Iowa lakes, the Conservation Commission by administrative order, has opened these lakes to winter fishing.
Farmers are concerned over the tremendous increase in corn borers in this are the past season. There is a good possibility the infestation will even be worse this coming year.
The Cleghorn father and son banquet will be held in the Presbyterian church on February 16.
Mrs. Fred Wilkens entertained at dinner Saturday honoring her son, Fritz, who celebrated his birthday.
A farwell party was held Tuesday evening at the Municipal Building in honor of Mr. & Mrs Louis Pingel who are moving to their new home in Sioux City.
At the January meeting of the Marcus American Legion meeting on Monday night, the post voted to buy five $10 shares in the Marcus fair association.

John Ogren, a well known resident of Marcus for many years passed away at the Dill Nursing Home early Saturday morning January 16 after reaching the age of 83 years.
A quick and uncontrollable blaze did heavy damage at a midnight fire Friday evening at the Darrell Franklin farm two miles west and six miles south of Marcus. Destroyed were a 32 x 125 foot concrete hog house and contents.
Holy Name won one game from Granville in the Class B competition 50 to 35.
Marcus and Aurelia will meet in the finals of the county basketball tournament at Cherokee as the result of victory over Quimby and Grand Meadow.
65 Years Ago -1959
A farm fire did about $1,200 worth of damage on the Howard Petersen farm 4 miles north west of Marcus early Saturday morning and the family who tenanted the farm house narrowly escaped with their lives.
The Cherokee County Music Festival will be held at the Marcus public school auditorium Monday. January 26.
Mrs. Merle Baumgardner received word of the death of her father Arthur Corrington, a resident of Quimby.
At the close of 1958, 685 farmers were cooperating with the Cherokee County Soil Conservation District in applying soil and water conservation practices on their land.

Mr. & Mrs. Gene Brannon of Omaha, NE are parents of a son born Thursday, January 9.
The Meriden Evangelical Free Church of Meriden, will be holding its first service in their new church this coming Sunday, January 19.
Henry Dorr, Sr. will observe his 94th birthday. Mr. Dorr has been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Mayer for almost two years.
The Northwest Iowa Girls Conference basketball tournament will get underway in the Marcus gymnasium this Satuday morning.
Mr. & Mrs. Bert Trower of Primghar visited in the Ernest Kaufmann home and also with Mrs. Alvina Rosch and the Kaufmann Brothers.

The Marcus boys basketball team beat Woodbury Central 61 to 55 Saturday, January 11 despite shooting over 50%. The Marcus girls finished on the short end of the 64-53 score.
Donna Snyder daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Roberts Snyder and senior students of nursing at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City was chosen vice president of the student council for 1969.
A daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. John Sand Tuesday, January 14. at Floyd Valley Hospital.
Charles Nielsen, owner of the Marcus Hardware, was named president of the Marcus Commercial Club at the directors meeting.
Mike Hoover left Tuesday for Wichita Falls, TX, where he will be playing with a band.
Mr. and Mrs. Eldred McIntire and family were pleasantly surprised by their farm meighbors with a farewell party Sunday evening, The McIntires will soon be moving to their home in Marcus.
Funeral Services for Nicholas Treinen, 92, of Remsen will be held Thursday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen.

Mel Lenox and Mike Olson each brought home firsts from the Central Lions Wrestling tournament last Saturday.
The Marcus Eaglettes scored two more victories this weekend raising their conference record to 5-0 and their overall record to 8-4.
Koe Jay Phillips of Marcus passed away at the Des Moines hospital.

The Marcus matmen won first place in the two-day Ida Grove tournament held last weekend. Marcus won the sixteen team tournament with 147.5 points.
Michelle Strub, Marcus and Cindy Hiller, Washta have been named to the Dean’s List at Buena Vista College both receiving a perfect 4.0.
Francis Junior Briggs died suddenly January 10, 1979 at his home in Marcus.
Mr. & Mrs. Ron Kass are the proud parents of a baby boy born January 10, 1979.
Marcus Sno-Birds and their families will have a ride and wiener roast on Sunday at the Harold Johnson farm.
Mrs. Oscar Gustafson, 70, passed away at her home following a several month illness.
Rod Klingenberg of Sand Seed Service, Marcus, recently attended a three day school at the Kent Feeds, Inc. general offices in Muscatine.

Mrs. Lyle Hinspeter, 57, of rural Meriden passed away at her home.
Mr. & Mr.s Merlin Harris are the proud parents of a daughter Casandra Jo born on December 25 at the the Orange City Hospital. Casandra was honored as the Christmas baby of 1983. oth were showered with gifts from the Orange City merchants.
Master Sergeant Robert C. Richael, son in law of Lyle and Hope Schlenger, was recently named as Outstanding Airman of the 12th Air Force, First Sergeant category.
