Farmers Succession Workshop for Northwest Iowa Crop and Livestock Producers
O’Brien County Economic Development and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach invite Northwest Iowa farmers and livestock producers to attend “Farm Succession for You” on Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Building in Primghar.
The program is designed to provide both practical experience and real research-based technical expertise to guide farmers and ag businesses in building their own succession plan.
“Economic growth is always a good thing,” said Kiana Johnson, O’Brien County Economic Development Executive Director. “But so is taking care of our own. We want to see Northwest Iowa farmers and families survive and thrive for generations to come. This program is being hosted as an opportunity for farmers and farm families to learn about and begin making plans to protect their farm for the next generation, whether that be for a child or grandchild, neighbor, or friend.”
The program will focus on farm transition and estate planning, with the following topics and speakers featured:
“Succession: What is your vision? What are your goals?” presented by Gary Wright, farm management specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach
“Ideas for a Successful and Harmonious Farm Transition,” presented by Jennifer Harrington, a staff attorney with the ISU Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation
“Succession Planning Legal Review,” presented by Jennifer Harrington, a staff attorney with the ISU Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation
“Beginning Farmer Loan and Tax Credit Programs,” presented by Nicki Howell and Tammy Nebola, ag development and program specialists with the Iowa Finance Authority
“Script Your Family’s Future: Why You Need an Estate Plan,” presented by Sheila R. Peelen, CFP®, AAMS® Financial Advisor
The program will address the importance of creating a successful transition plan that is legally binding and secure. Tips and resources will be provided throughout the day, and there will be time for questions.
“As goals, life and laws change, succession and transition planning are an essential part of a successful farm business,” said Marsha Rehder, O’Brien County Ag Program Coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. “We hope Northwest Iowa crop and livestock producers will take advantage of this low-cost opportunity to plan ahead for the future of both their family and their farm.”
Registration fee for the program is $20 per person or $30 per married couple. This fee includes one set of resource materials, as well as a noon meal and refreshments.
