110 Years Ago – 1913
About 20 officials of the Illinois Central Railroad Company arrived here in a special train of four coaches and were guests of the commercial club for an hour. The Marcus band greeted them and they were escorted around town in autos. Marcus hospitality impressed the officials.
Fifteen young men and boys were served warrants by Police man Fechter and appeared before Mayor Twogood and paid for their Halloween pranks.
The public schools at Granville have been closed due to several cases of small pox.
The Stork has been busy in Amherst township – Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Digel-a daughter, October 28: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Olson-a son, October 24; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Waller a daughter, November 2; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rupp a daughter, November 2; and Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Carlson-a son, November 3.

105 Years Ago -1918
News that Lloyd Evans had safely arrived on this side of the Atlantic and had landed at New York City was received Tuesday by his father, M. C. Evans.
The farmers in the vicinity of Clear Lake, Iowa, are harvesting the big sugar beet crop and hustling it to the plant of the Northern Sugar Corporation at Mason City.
Word was received that Peter Miller Jr. was out of commission on account of a gas attack. Peter went to France early last summer. He writes that the gas has seriously affected his hearing.
Mrs. John Barry, who has been ill with pneumonia for several days, died this morning at her home northwest of Marcus.

100 Years Ago – 1923
The community was saddened by three deaths this week, James McIntosh, Isaiah C. Thompson and Lucy Brownmiller.
Dr. and Mrs. Given are the proud parents of a little girl born on Saturday afternoon.’ She has been named Bernadette.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Smith and L. F.Kiner went to Sioux City Tuesday and saw “The Covered Wagon” at the auditorium there.
Dr. M. F. Joynt was suddenly stricken with a severe attack of appendicitis yesterday afternoon and was rushed to Le Mars where Dr. Feltes operated on him.
Katherine Brink entertained about thirty of her girl friends at a costume party at the Brink store Tuesday evening.

95 Years Ago -1928
The Marcus drum and bugle corps placed second in a contest at the American Legion district convention at Hawarden.
There were some who estimated the corn gathered as about one-third. The work has necessarily been slow on account of the large amount of down corn.
Articles of incorporation of the Farmers State Bank were published this week.
The Norman Smith farm has recently added a new laying house for their white Wyandottes. The house is 20×20 in size and is equipped with the Lowden ventilating system.

85 Years Ago -1938
Vein Brownmiller had the misfortune to have his hand severely injured while working with a corn picker at the ‘farm south of Marcus.
Ralph Porter of Amherst township won first prize with a ten-ear entry in the competition at the Hartley husking contest held last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Smith are the parents of a daughter born on Friday, Oct. 28.
The Brownie Girl Scout Troop was entertained after school Monday at a Halloween party at the Merle Cave home.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dalton and daughters moved from an apartment at the Fred Paine residence to the duplex recently vacated by the E. Delaney family.

80 Years Ago – 1943
Mr. and Mrs. Harley Wingert are parents of a baby girl born October 18. She has been named Nancy Kay.
Betty and Beverly Hobson entertained about fourteen guests at a Halloween party in the basement of their home Thursday afternoon.
Ole Wallin has purchased the house formerly occupied by Mrs. Louella Rae.
John Harms has been quite ill the past week at his home.
Mrs. G. W. Evans spent the weekend with Mrs. Stanley Smith and Audrey at St. Paul, Minn.
Charles Miller, who has been spending a furlough from the navy with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Miller, left Friday.

The 1941 blue Oldsmobile belonging to Harvey Coleman was stolen early Monday morning from in front of his home.
The work of preparing a skating pond for this winter has been started on the M. R. Nelson block, the former Sjostrom park, east of Main Street.
Margaret Schmillen has resigned her position with the Gamble store in Marcus.
Marilyn Alesch was pleasantly surprised when the ftmembers of the senior class of the Holy Name high school gathered at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Alesch, Jr., honoring her on her 17th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs.Howard Peavey and Ed Johnson of Marcus and Marvin Dawson of Washta drove to Sioux City Tuesday where they left by plane to attend the annual meeting of the Consumers Cooperative Association.

Velma Hohbach, senior candidate, was crowned queen of the homecoming at the pep rally.
Mrs. M. J. Kelly returned home Tuesday afternoon from New York City after seeing her daughter, Mary Ellen, sail for a tour of European shrines ‘aboard the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Nielsen were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary at a dinner held in the municipal ‘building.
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Miller and family of Cleghorn and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Radcliffe and family were dinner guests Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Edgar, honoring the Edgars on their 37th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hogue are the parents of a son born Tuesday night Oct. 6 weighing seven pounds. He has one brother, Brian. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Bass and Mrs. Ruth Hogue of Sioux City.

Craig Duane Hohbach, the two—month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Hohbach of Hartley, passed away Oct. 24 at Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, after a short illness.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Means are the parents of a son born Friday, Oct. 24, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schefstad of Remsen.
Floyd Bentz is hobbling around on crutches, the result of stepping on a stone Friday while on duty at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator. He received a severely sprained ankle and a slightly sprained wrist in the fall.
Charles Metcalf is a patient in Sacred Heart Hospital of Le Mars, receiving treatment for a stomach ailment.
The Niemann Jewelry, as a part of its observance of its 70th year in business in Marcus, . will have the Traub collection of diamonds on display Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Nacke of Cincinnati, Ohio, are the parents of a daughter born Friday, Oct. 18, 1963. She has been named Julie Lynn. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bus Davenport of Anamosa and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nacke of Marcus.
Army Specialist/Four Ronald G. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emerald
H. Johnson of Marcus and other members of the 6th Transportation Battalion from Fort Eustis, Va., are participating as support personnel in Germany for Operation “Big Lift.”
Leland Hogue, Merle Baumgardner, Fred Hoover, and Wes Carney returned Thursday from a fishing trip in Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kerr of Indianola are the proud parents of a son, Scott Richard, born Oct. 22, 1963. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dorr of Marcus. Mrs. Jacob Dixon and Mrs. Fred Dorr, both of Marcus, are the 2reat-grandmothers.

Lt. and Mrs. Walter Brownlee of Colorado Springs, Colo, are the parents of a daughter born Oct. 19, 1968. She has been named Michelle Kay and she has a brother Mark. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brownlee and Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Hirschman. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hirsch-man and LeRoy Pease, all of Washta.
An open house for neighbors was held on the afternoon of Oct.. 19, honoring Mrs. Fred Mossman on her birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Booth are proud parents of a daughter born October 29 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Shannon Shirlon weighed 8 lbs. 3 ox. and has a brother, Rory, to welcome her home. Grandparents are Mrs. Shirley Peterson of Washta and Mr. and Mrs. Vern Brownmiler. Mrs. Margaret Hollenbeck and Mrs. Clara Brownmiller, both of Cherokee, are great-grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley 0. Nervig, cashier, Farmers State Bank, Marcus, Iowa, were among the more than 5,300 persons from 668 banks who attended the 87th annual convention of the Iowa Bankers Association here October 21-24.
The Rev. Kariton R. Wagner of Vinton, Iowa has accepted the call of Faith Lutheran Church, Marcus, to become their new pastor.

45 Years Ago – 1978
Curt Harnack, Iowa author, will visit Marcus Community High School on Monday, November 6, to visit with students interested in writing.
Steve Kunzweiler and Bill Schwarz of Marcus Community High School visited with a Navy recruiting representative on Navy careers.
Stan Nervig of the local Farmer’s State Bank was the guest of the Special People class at Marcus Community High School.
Volunteers helped erect the ten foot high chain link fence around the new tennis courts at Cleghorn. More help will be needed next week as three sides are yet to be fenced.

40 Years Ago –1983
An open house was held Saturday. October 22, at the Marcus Community Center and it was well attended. A fund raiser may take place soon to help with needed repairs.
The Meriden-Cleghorn High School will present its production of “Who Dunnit?” – a three-act comedy/mystery play on November 4 and 5 in the Cleghorn auditorium.
Basketball cheerleaders at Marcus are Angie Dorr, Susie Sand, Rhonda Reuter, Rachel Wibe and Carla Lehan.

35 Years Ago – 1988
Tammy Robinson and Becky Rupp of MMC finished in the all-tournament semifinals on Saturday, October 29, at the Paullina Speech Festival.
The kindergartners and first graders at Marcus had a “Wear Red Day” to help celebrate the 25th birthday of Clifford and the Big Red Dog.

Jeff Goth has been appointed cashier in addition to his position as assistant vice-president at First Trust and Savings Bank, NA. at Remsen.
Paul and Mary Ellen Wilkens are the parents of a 7 lb. 4 oz. daughter, Christina Rose, born October 25.
