It doesn’t seem possible that we are in September! Where has the summer gone to? People are finding time to take time off and celebrate Labor Day on Monday. There are those that start celebrating on the weekend (Sept. 1 and 2); really making a vacation of this holiday. There are some weddings that take place during this time as that is when people are home.
Well I supposed you have heard of the person (me) that was concerned about a curb that was covered with grass/weeds? I was at the Library program and after leaving it, went to the car. In order to get to the car, you would have to walk across the grass section from the main sidewalk. After my fall, I really pay attention to walking and don’t let anything else disturb me—except when I had reached the car and heard a lady tell another lady, “There is a curb there!” Where they were crossing, the curb was covered with grass and that terrible weed that finds its way out of the grass. Basically, with this week covering the curb, there didn’t seem to be a curb; just a continuation of grass. If I would have had 2 hands and a shears, I would have gone afterwards and cleared it off the curb.
The next morning I called City Hall to register this “petty” concern that could have been an accident like what I’m going through. (There have already been 2 people that fell on a curb and it was in front of a store—no grass. One lady had to have shoulder surgery.) I just don’t want anyone else to go through what I am going through. The drop off of that curb is the same distance that I had with missing a step. I told her that the entire length of that curb wasn’t all this way but there were certain spots. It did get cleaned up—thank you! Driving around town, this weed is on some people’s curbs but no one has to cross these. It is a weed that is hard to get rid of.
Last Thursday and Friday, MMCRU’s students were out early because of the heat. Kids don’t do well when it is so hot. (Just how well would we do if we had to leave our air conditioned house?!)
After midnight, going into Monday, I decided I would make Velma Garvin’s soft cookies. I made sure I had all the ingredients before I started. The beaters went into the mixer, but I hadn’t thought about starting it. I finally pushed a heavy bread knife handle to get the mixer on and off. A person doesn’t realize how important two arms and ten fingers are until they are needed. When I was done, I knew I had really worked to get these done. Any other time, I wouldn’t have noticed it. After all this, I took one cookie and went back to bed! Was the time spent for just one cookie? At least I knew I could still do something.
Wednesday (Aug. 30) is Jesse’s birthday. I always call them up on their birthday. Most of the time I have to leave a message, but it can’t be said that I didn’t call. He did answer and seemed to know nothing of what happened to me the last 2 months. I told him I thought the whole town knew!
Wednesday I had an appointment with the surgeon who released me for therapy.
Thursday night Zachary went to Sioux City to pick up his lawnmower that had been set out for pickup. I told him to call and make sure it would be there. They had said earlier it would be there so it wasn’t necessary to call. Well, it wasn’t there so it was a trip wasted. This was the third time this has happened. I told him that they should be responsible for time and mileage when this happened, but of course I didn’t know anything!
I had a 9:15 therapy appointment on Friday and I finally got him to answer his phone a few minutes before 9 o’clock which meant I had to get another appointment—at 3:15 that afternoon. He had Meals on Wheels to Deliver and then it was back to Sioux City to pick up the lawnmower and hopefully back to Le Mars for therapy.
He parked away from the therapy area (trailer behind the pickup) and I got off and went inside. I was a little early so went to the restroom. Soon I heard someone calling my name. I couldn’t figure out who or what was going on. It was the lady that made therapy appointments. Zachary had decided to come to the therapy area and wait for me. When he got there, I wasn’t there and no one had seen me—so, the hunt was on to find if I had gotten lost or why I wasn’t at the therapy area. This is why my name was being called in the restroom. I had never had this happen to me before! I did get a 45 minute therapy treatment that left me with pain in that arm again. After being at a 45 degree angle for 2 months, and then finally being able to hang down at 180 degrees, this was expected. I don’t have to go back until the day after Labor Day. Meanwhile, I’m putting cold packs on the arm which does help.
Thursday was the memorial service for Michael Deichmann. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family on his unexpected death. I understand he had left his body for science. There were well over 250 people in attendance. May memories of Michael be of comfort to the Deichmann families. May he rest in peace until we meet again.
Thursday was the day Milt Wurth died. He will be missed at Heartland. When I was at Heartland after having my hip replaced (2 years ago), he was always so friendly and talkative. His funeral was on Saturday and was well attended. I have a special memory of Milt and his wife, Barb. One day I was going past the Wurth Hardware store and I was motioned to come in as they had something to give me. The gift was an eight place setting of my nice silverware I had lost during our fire. I was amazed and said I couldn’t accept such an expensive gift. They let me know they wanted to give me this and would rather it not be acknowledged (to which I agreed until now.) Milt will be missed by those of us whose lives he touched. May memories of him be of comfort to his family and may he rest in peace until we meet again.
This is the Labor Day weekend and I went to find some information on just when this came about. It was President Lyndon B. Johnson that signed it as an official holiday day for ALL workers not just federal workers as had been the case before his time.
On Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. the Marcus Public Library is having Meterorologist, Ron Demers come and answers our questions about what exactly happens to cause thunderstorms, tornadoes, etc. This program is for All ages!
Remember is your thoughts and prayers those who have lost loved ones to death, have had their lives changes, have health issues with some being terminal, are struggling to make ends meet even though they have a job, help those who desire “wants” are more important then ‘needs’ that prestige isn’t everything and be with those who are still trying to shorten the distance between family/friends to build a bridge instead of a wall. Count your blessings! I will close with this quote from Mother Teresa, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
