110 Years Ago – 1913
The contact for the erection of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Amherst township has been let to Ben Hully of Marcus. The structure will cost $5,000.
A son was born to Mr. & Mrs. John Sullivan, August 27.
Cleghorn school opens next Monday with Miss Chase as principal, Stella Allen as grammar teacher and Sadie Schlenger in charge of the primary room.
100 Years Ago – 1923
Mich and Kass specials: a pound can of red salmon 22¢, fig bars 22¢ per package and sweet pickles 20¢ per sack.
Marcus Booster baseball team won 5-3 from Paullina in a 12 inning game Friday with Flanagan pitching.
C. V. and Ray Peters, the Dan Collins family, Perry King, Will Ernest, Henry Dorr, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Niemann, A. J. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kestel, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Heline and the Dr. E. S. Smith family are attending the state fair at Des Moines this week.
Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Geringer and Howard and Harold plan to leave next week for Chicago where they will raise poultry and do truck farming.
Sybil Swanson, Edna Booth, Anna Kielhorn, Florence Foley, Esther Sb-water, Gladys Imhoff and Blanche Woodall will teach rural schools this fall.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dorr returned front a vacation trip to the Iowa State Fair at Des Moines.
Torn Knox arrived home after a visit and sightseeing trilp to the eastern slates.
Coach Olson of Marcus High School expects to continue the good football season, as lie has several returning players from last years squad.

Captain Ben Racliffe, Anderson and Rae will play in the backfield and KuhI will be quarterback on the Marcus High School football team with Coach Manning as their mentor.
Marcus was without water all day Monday as the pump was out of commission

80 Years Ago – 1943
Harold J. Booth, son of Mrs. Maude Booth of Marcus, was promoted from Captain to Major at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He is 33 years old and was a teacher and coach at Fort Dodge, Iowa I ugh School.
Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Woltman of Cleghorn are the parents of a son, born Saturday August 21st.
75 Years Ago -1948
Marcus Public School had an opening enrollment of 255 students with 99 in high school. Marcus Holy Name has 213 enrolled with 58 in high school.
John Specht purchased the Addy 160 acre farm in Amherst Township for $48,400, with the J. F. Collins Agency handling the sale.
Earl Devin announces the opening of his new cafe, adjoining Earl’s Tavern on the north side. They are serving lunches, sandwiches, pie, coffee and soft drinks.
The Marcus fire department was called to the Mrs. Fern Wheeler farm north of Marcus Wednesday afternoon by a tractor fire.
70 Years Ago -1953
Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Delaney are the parents of a 6 lb. 1 1/2 oz, daughter, named Mary Margaret, born Sunday, August 30th.
A basement is being dug for a new home for the Reverend John Christensen family on the lot south of the Henry Zembsch home on Sunset Hill. A tenant house from the Briggs farm south of Marcus will be moved to the site.
The Cleghorn Consolidated school cooks and helpers cleaned and prepared 80 chickens for the school lunches.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Birch of Washta announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Donna, to Ted Stoltenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Stoltenberg of Cushing.
Pre-nuptial dinners were given in honor of Margaret McGivern and Robert J. Joynt on Aug. 16 and on Aug. 18.

Karleen Klingborg is spending her summer vacation from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts with her parents. Mr. & Mrs. Carl Klingborg.
A Grand opening was held Friday and Saturday, August 29 and 30, at Bud’s Place in Cleghorn. It is now operated by Dick Rhodes and Clarence Berding.
Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Anderson of Cleghorn were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Leltnhardt at Lyle, MN.
Ila Jean Hewicker and Lee O’Brien were married Friday, August 2, at Madison, Wisc.

The new community fire station is in. the final stages of completion, and the Fire Dept. expects to move into its new home within a day or two.
Incumbent directors Melvin G. Dorr’s and Dr. M. R. Nelson’s nomination papers have been filed for directorship of the Marcus Community School District.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Cave will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Sept. 1 with an open house at their farm house.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Ebert are the parents of a daughter, Cathy Lynn, born Aug. 20 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars.
55 Years Ago -1968
Funeral services were held for former Mareusite, Delmar R. Dunn, 46, of Omaha, Thursday, August 29, in the Nelson Funeral Home with burial in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Mrs Mabel Edmonds and Mrs. Mystel Gray returned to Marcus after spending the summer at Lake Okoboji, where Mrs. Irving Artes of Hart ford, Conn. joined them.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Specht and family of Cleghorn flew to Huntington, CA where they Spent 8 days visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Don Barnes, and visiting other places of interest.
50 Years Ago -1973
Sharon Ann Puhrmann. 24, of rural Paullina, was killed instantly in a car -gravel truck collision 3 miles north of Marcus. She was returning to her work at Western Cherokee Insurance in Marcus after attending a funeral in Paullina.
Diana Drefke and her Plymouth County Fair Grand Champion. steer, “Buddy”, took top honors at the Iowa State Fair.
Mark Roethler graduated with honors from the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science August 17 at the Institute in Dallas.
45 Years Ago – 1978
MEDCO salutes the Schmillen Construction Company and owners, Chuck and Diane Schmillen. Chuck has been in the business for 6 years and started the Marcus company April 1, 1977
The Cleghorn City Council voted to continue with their park recreation project and accepted the bid of the Brower Construction Company, $12,763, for the tennis courts.
June Ann Carey of Marcus and Donald Lee Bryant of Winterset were married August 5, in Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus They will make their home at Glidden where both are employed in, the school system.
40 Years Ago –1983
Joe Bird, a 1978 graduate of Marcus Community High School, and Arlene Pick, a
1979 graduate of Remsen St. Mary’s, plan a November 26th wedding in St. Catherine’s Church at Oyens.
Renee Staver and Kelli Nafziger, members of Meriden-Cleghorn Drill Team attended a camp at Coe College, Cedar Rapids. They both received several awards for their participation and expertise.
Rae Anne Rupp has taken over the former “Betty’s Beauty Bar” in Marcus and it is now called “Family Hair Design”.

Grand Meadow Heritage Festival will be held Saturday, September 10, with many events planned, including the Dixie Daddies.
Fern Rassel of Marcus was surprised on her 80th birthday, when 45 guests gathered at the Wayne Rassel farm outside of LeMars. to honor her.
Rebecca Kay Lundell and Timothy Willis, both of Mesa, AZ, were married in Oakdale Evangelical Free Church, north of Meriden August 13th. They will leave in Mesa where she is a teacher and he is an aerospace mechanic in Phoenix.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Former Marcusite, Lillian Dempsey Ritts, 100, died recently at Bollingbrook. IL, burial was in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Survivors are a daughter, Rosemary, and a son, Joe,
Edith Sand underwent surgery at Sioux Falls, S.D. She had both knees replaced and will remain there for recuperation and therapy.
Tom Leavitt of Marcus and Becky Hansen of Rutland, IA are planning an October 23 wedding in Marcus, where both are employed.
25 Years Ago – 1998
Joey Brady and Christa Kranig were the lucky winners of the bicycles given away at the Marcus Fair,
The Marcus For Progress Group and officials from Mainstreet of Iowa toured Marcus business places and discussed preparation for acceptance into the Main Street Program.
The farm machinery, equipment and miscellaneous tools belonging to the Paul Kestel estate will he sold at Public auction Friday, September II, at 1:00 p.m. on the farm northwest of Marcus.
20 Years Ago – 1993
The Marcus Al Season Recreation park is under way at the south end of main street. The recreation area will have a basketball court for summer and in the winter it will double as a ice skating or hockey rink.
Jessica Sokolowski and Damon Busse announce their engagement and upcoming weeding planned for December 6.
