110 Years Ago – 1913
John B. Porter, a well known resident of Marcus, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 23, after an illness of six months.
Will Hyndman, who lives east of town, was kicked by a horse Saturday evening, resulting in breaking three ribs.
David Walton of Wayne, Neb., was located here as a mason. Mr. Walton’s family will come to Marcus in a few days.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan August 27; daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. C. C. McMullin August 22.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Woessner and children of Sioux Falls, S. D., were weekend guests in the LaVern Briese home. Brian returned home with them after spending a week here.
105 Years Ago -1918
The subscription price of the Marcus News will be $2 per year after October 1, 1918.
Mrs. S. S. Conaway, living north of Marcus, passed away at her home Tuesday morning, Aug. 20.
Forty young ladies gave Miss Ann Greff, a bride of the month, a surprise last Saturday afternoon in the form of a miscellaneous shower at the Greff home.
Following a four month vacation the Marcus public school will re-open next Monday for the new school year.
100 Years Ago – 1923
The price of gas has dropped to 16 1/2¢ per gallon at the stations.
The work on Sjostrom Park is progressing at a brisk rate.
Edmond Evans, 20, of Marcus, passed away Thursday, August 3, after an 8 weeks illness and much suffering. Survivors include his parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
Dorothy Simons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Simons, passed away at St. Vincent’s hospital in Sioux City August 28 after a brief illness.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Nield and James and Mrs. Jen Hostetler returned Thursday afternoon from a six week western trip.
Mr. and Mrs. N. 0. Geringer and sons, Howard and Harold, plan to leave for Chicago next week.
95 Years Ago -1928
James Nield departed for Berkely, California for the purpose of installing a chapter of Phi Tau Theta, a national Methodist Fraternity at the University of California.
Mary Loomis, daughter of Mrs. Gertrude Loomis, and Ralph G.Weldon of Ottumwa were married August 14th.
Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the house and its contents at the Joe Carey farm Sunday evening.
85 Years Ago -1938
Joe Ritts took hitting honors for the local Junior Legion baseball team against Paullina Friday.
Patricia Delaney was honored on her third birthday Tuesday. She and her guests were treated to a train ride to Remsen.
R. J. Satterlee received three broken ribs in an automobile accident near Oyens Thursday evening.
Josephine Nagle and Ruth Samuelson are in charge of the doll buggy and tricycle parade in this year’s livestock show.
Lowell and Junior Franch, members of the town and Junior Legion baseball teams, both received severe leg injuries in recent games and are out for the balance of the season.
80 Years Ago – 1943
On September 2, 1931, the local Lyric Theatre opened under the management of Ed Delaney. This Thursday the theatre will celebrate its 12th anniversary.
Helen Rubbert, who has been studying radio and communications at the Electronics Radio Television Institute at Omaha, NE returned to her home Wednesday.
Mr. & Mrs. Richard Petersen of San Diego, CA are parents of a daughter Myrilyn Jean, born August 20.
Thomas Anderson left Wednesday and Lawrence Slagter left Thursday to report for duty in the United States Navy.

Lowell Nelson, Marcus undertaker, has announced the purchase of the Georges Pharmacy building and will open a furniture store.
The purchase of the Gamble Store in Marcus by Ernest Haahr was announced this week and the new owner is now in possession.
Ruth Ward, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J.S. Ward of Maryville, MO became the bride of Howard McConnell, son of Mr. & Mrs. Ralph McConnell in the First Methodist Church at Maryville.
70 Years Ago -1953
The Marcus Redwings won their own tournament with a 6-5 win over KIHO of Sioux Falls.
George Case, 59, died Friday evening after suffering a stroke. He was a well known farmer living southwest of Marcus. Survivors include 3 daughters, his father, a brother and 2 sisters.
Sgt. Ronald Mortenson arrived at Omaha Monday night August 17 after spending 12 months in Japan and Korea.
Shirley Mae Briggs, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Francis Briggs, became the bride of Lawrence Rudy, son of Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Rudy of Sheldon Sunday evening at Grace Methodist Chruch.
65 Years Ago -1958
Mr. and Mrs. Max Mugge of Cleghorn are the parents of a daughter, named Beth Lorene, born Friday, August 8th. She has a sister and 2 brothers at home.
The furniture and household goods of the Matt Schmillen family will be sold at public auction Sunday, August 24. They plan to move to California to be closer to their children.
Sharon Lage of Marcus and Jack Dawson of Washta will be married Saturday evening, August 30 in Peace Lutheran Church at Marcus.
60 Years Ago -1963
Joyce Hazen daughter of Kermit and Kathryn Hazen of Cleghorn, departed Sunday for an extended visit with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hlad, at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Ridickulous Days were held in Marcus Friday and Saturday, August 16 and 17, with the annual Marcus Fair August 19-21.
Loretta Nagle and Laurence Bass were named Queen and Queen of the Marcus Ridiekulous Days.
55 Years Ago -1968
Pfc. and Mrs. Larry Kohn are the parents of an 81b. loz. son, named Chad Michael, born Tuesday, Au-gust 81h. Both of his parents, Larry and Linda (Greene) are 1963. graduates of Marcus Community High School.
About 150 people attended the open house birthday party honoring Mrs. Lucy Robinson Friday evening. August 9th, in the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church.
Mr. and Mrs. John Barry, Jr. and family attended the wedding of Gloria Steineke and Gregory Geerdes at Quimby Sunday afternoon.
50 Years Ago -1973
Lawrence Brady, Eric Carlson and Don Alesch were elected as directors of the Marcus Farmers Elevator replacing retirees Dave Kerr, Pete Wurth and Jim Alesch.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heesch of Marcus will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, August 20th at Peace Lutheran Church. Their sons, Laverne and Don, with the help of other relatives are hosting the event.
Grand Meadow Heritage Center set up a free rest stop 2 miles south of the center for RAGBRAI VI riders. It was a huge success.
Cleghorn City Council will be accepting bids for the asphalt tennis court floor.
40 Years Ago –1983
Mr. and Mrs. Galen Ducommun returned home after a trip through the New England States. They visited Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Newport, RI., Connecticut and Niagara Falls.
Two foreign exchange students, both girls, Lone Peterson of Odder, Denmark and Jeanette Tranberg of Sandersjord, Norway, will be attending Meriden-Cleghorn High School this fall. Lone will be a sophomore and Jeanette, a senior.
Superintendent Leland Anderson of Meriden-Cleghorn states about 273 students will report on opening day.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Mrs. Ray (Kathleen Sholly) Kass, 59, died Tuesday, August 9, following open heart surgery at Sioux City. Funeral services were held in Holy Name Church with burial in the church cemetery. Survivors include her husband, 2 daughters, 2 sons, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Lori Maass and Jim Ruba both of Remsen, were married July 22 and will make their home in rural Granville.
Brian Egger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Egger of Cleghorn, departed for the Air Force Officer’s Training School at San Antonio, TX.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Frank Ashmore of Pierre, S.D. has been selected as the new superintendent of MMC High School. He and his wife, Judy, are the parents of 3 children, Robyn, Tom and Anne.
A Century Farm observance was held at the Max Drefke farm Sunday, August 1st. It was purchased by Max’s Great-Grandparents Henry and Hattie Wilson March 1st, 1893 for $9780. Neva and Lloyd Barnes, Madge and Delmer Drefke and now Max and Nancy Drefke have succeeded them as dwellers there. It is now known as W-BAR-D Co.
Ashley Reuter was chosen Little Miss Marcus with Emily Alesch as first runner-up.
25 Years Ago – 1998
The Marcus Ambulance Fund Drive Goal is set at $80,000 with a total of $25,375 pledged so far.
Former Marcusite, Bradley John Eckhoff, and Roberta Ellsworth of Johnston, IA are planning a September 26th wedding at LeMars.
Bob and Judy Carlson of Quimby attended a Shaklee International Leadership Convention in Geneva, Switzerland July 13-19. Their expenses were paid by Shakiec in appreciation of their leadership in sales.
