115 Years Ago – 1908
Mrs. John Bird and son, Joe and daughter, Connie, left for Canada to look after a claim of Joe’s. Mrs. Bird went along for her health.
Joe Heath did the carpenter work on the fine new steps at the Methodist Church.
L. Seegar purchased the J.L. Replogle residence.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Ben Hully has the contract for the 30’ x 40’ one and a half story bangalow to be built on South Ash Street for M.W. Carey. Excavation has begun and Carey expects to occupy it before cold weather is here.
Former Cleghorn girl, Jessie Bosworth, and Howard Brown of Marcus were married and will make their home on a farm near Marcus.
105 Years Ago -1918
Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Rosburg, fell and bruised her arm and blood poisoning has set in.
J. U. Armbruster injured his ear drum by a straw while helping Marcus farmers shock grain last week.
Christian Mikkelson, John Jensen,
William Hobbs, John Peterson, Cally Ellis, Michael McClintock, and Albert Anderson left July29 from Cherokee in special coaches for the Army.
100 Years Ago – 1923
John Bird of Corvallis, Ore., came Sunday and is visiting relatives.
The Edmonds-Londergan Company grain elevator burned to the ground as the result of a bolt of lightning.
Evelyn Ensign, missionary worker in Japan, and Rev. Albert A. Leininger, also in that work, in Tokyo, were married July 12th at Sapporo, Japan.
Bobbed hair is the rage in Marcus. Husbands appear to be the only class to oppose the movement.
Gladys Lucille Cave and John Rasmussen of Deppe, Alberta, Canada were married July 29.
95 Years Ago -1928
The automobiles driven by E. C. Sherrick and E. J. Doherty collided at the intersection west of the Henry Dorr farm Sunday. Neither driver was seriously injured although both cars were damaged.
Oats in this vicinity is yielding 44 to 50 bushels per acre and weighs from 45 to 50 pounds to the bushel.
Rev. Father George Cooke returned Wednesday from a trip to the Holy Lands, Rome, Italy, Ireland and other European countries.
Alice Dunn and Harold Geringer were married Monday at Cherokee.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hanson are parents of a daughter born July 22.
85 Years Ago -1938
Richard Drefke was appointed as manager of the Community Coop Oil Company.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hamilton and Ardyth and Wilson will leave Marcus Tuesday after a residence here of 28 years.
Kenneth Bancroft purchased the August Kamrath farm 11 miles northwest of Marcus.
Howard Holmes of the U. S. Navy returned from a trip overseas to England, France and Denmark.
80 Years Ago – 1943
H.A. and L.W. Heusinkueld, owners and operators of the Paullina Locker Plant, have purchased the Marcus Locker plants from Mrs. Agnes Haahr. The Marcus plant has 420 lockers and enjoys a good business.
Dorothy McConnell of Marcus, and Cherokee County 4-H president, attended a two-day 4-H meeting at Ames.
75 Years Ago -1948
Sherrillean Brownmiller is visiting with her great-grandmother, Mrs. Revina Williams at Primghar.
Miss Evelyn Nestor, bride-elect of Michael Clarkson, was honored at a pre-nuptial shower in Holy Name Hall.
Doris Lillian Alm of Cleghorn and George Gottsche were married Saturday, July 31, in the home of the bride’s parent.
Danny and Diane Enneking, twin children of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Enneking, were honored on their 6th birthdays with a party in their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron Hoxsie of Selina, Washington, spent a few days visiting their sister -in-law, Mrs. Susan Hoxsie.
70 Years Ago -1953
Harold C. Ladenthin of Sioux City took over the Satterlee Pharmacy here. He bought the building as well as the business. The Satterlees purchased the business from the Matt Carey estate 27 years ago.
Seven patrons of the Marcus post office took the civil service exam for the postmaster job here. They included George Wilson, Gerald Rae, Roger Leavitt, Jr., Harold Wallin, Gerald Pallesen, Vernon Means and Nels Pallesen.
Durward Rieper is hospitalized with second degree burns on his arms and chest caused when a pile of trash he was burning exploded.
65 Years Ago -1958
Josephine Hyndman, a 1955 graduate of Marcus Holy Name. will graduate from St. Joseph’s Mercy School of Nursing on Sunday, August 10
Dr. and Mrs. M.D. Hayden will be gone four weeks to Bremerton, Washington. He is a member of the Naval Reserve and will serve a two-week tour of duty in the Naval Hospital there.
This area will get its first black top roads on farm-to-market roads west of Marcus.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harman, Jr. are the proud parents of a 7 lb. 12 oz. daughter, Margaret Ann, born Thursday, July 24. She has a brother, Jimmy.
60 Years Ago -1963
The 27th Annual Marcus Fair will feature a variety horse show on the final evening.
Betty Prunty, a 1960 graduate of Marcus High School will graduate from the Methodist School of Nursing, Sioux City, August 8.
The annual meeting of the Farmer’s Co-op Company of Cleghorn and Cherokee was held Saturday. July 27, in the Cleghorn gymnasium with 250 members attending. A 7 p.m. steak supper was served by the ladies of the Cleghorn Presbyteran church.
55 Years Ago -1968
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Pearson are the parents of an 8 lb. 3 oz. daughter, Elizabeth Marie, born Monday, July 29. She has a brother, Todd.
Karleen Anderson, bride-elect of Richard Waller, was honored at a bridal shower at Mt. Pleasant Church.
Mrs. Lyle Spicler and son Mike are spending several weeks in the Martin Spieler home, while Lyle is serving with the 185th Tactical Division in Viet Nam. Mrs. Lyle and son are living with her parents at Crofton, Nebraska.
Mrs. Lucy Robinson and daughter Virginia and her granddaughters Margaret and Mary Nelson, all of Cleghorn, enjoyed a three-week trip to the east coast and visited Washington, D.C. and other historic places.
50 Years Ago -1973
Meriden-Cleghorn School District will hold an election September 11 to fill the expired terms of James Prunty and Jack Pores-man.
Bonnie Simons and Ric Collins are planning an August 19 wedding. Bonnie is employed in Marcus Farmer’s State Bank and Ric will be teaching at Sioux Center Community School this fall.
Brenda Sand was honored on her 8th birthday at a party hosted by her mother in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Alesch on Saturday, July 28.
Members of the Meriden Evangelical Free Church WMS made their annual visit to the Boone Evangelical Free Church Home to entertain the residents.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. Ehmcke and daughter Twila, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ehmcke and Kelly and a niece, Kathy Leonard, attended the 25th annual production of Hiawatha Pageant at Pipestone, Minnesota.
45 Years Ago – 1978
The Class of 1968 Marcus High School held their ten year class reunion at the Marcus Country Club. The program was emceed by Bill Brady.
Mrs. Arthur Dorr, 85, nee Bertha Wendt, passed away Thursday, July 28, after a lengthy illness. Survivors include her husband, three sons and three daughters.
40 Years Ago –1983
The Cleghorn City Council approved a request by the Iowa DOT, to place speed limit signs on Iowa Highway #3 on the east and west approaches reducing speeds from 55 m.p.h. to 45 m.p.h. and then to 35 mph..
The Urbach Roofing slow pitch women’s softball team has a record of twenty wins and three losses in the LeMars Women’s League.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Leo and Marie French and Bruce French held a hog roast supper at the Meriden Community building to celebrate the French farm becoming a Century farm and also a mortgage burning affair.
25 Years Ago – 1998
Verdetta Peterson, Marcus city clerk for the past 21 years is retiring. An open house will be held at City Hall, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Wednesday, August 10.
20 Years Ago – 1993
Volunteers began construction work on the First Presbyterian Church at Cleghorn. A larger entrance will be built and a 13’ 8” x 32’ room will be built at ground level for handicapped persons.
