Personal Mention
by Elaine Rassel I got a permanent wave on Monday so now I can concentrate on all the functions that are happening in May and not have to have my hair done up in rollers!
I attended another Marcus City Council meeting on Monday, April 26. United Bank of Iowa representative Logan Patterson addressed the Council on buying the area where the MAC sign is on (across from the post office) with an offer of $10,000. They are contemplating buying Leo Swartz’ s house (south of the Sign area) and are planning on having a drive-through bank to offer their customers. No other plans have been made except to see if these 2 lots could be had.
I missed out on three Texas Ranger programs and one of Judge Mathis after midnight and until 4 a.m. on Tuesday. It was time to make a pair of Zachary’s pants presentable. For those four hours, I was fixing the backside of these pants. One pocket side was ripped away from the back and the other pocket was well on its way to looking like the other pocket. And, part of the waist band was torn loose.
My sewing machine is right beside the television, so I could hear what was on television. I was done in time to see two Family Feud programs. I told him that these 4 hour repairs were not cheap. His answer was that it was a little bit cheaper than going and buying a new pair.
I really miss the place that was located on Fourth Street in Sioux City. One of his pants are still being used that were from there. They just don’t make jeans the way they used to. The rejects that were for sale could always be fixed. I always checked to see if the zipper was working_if it wasn’t, I didn’t buy it. My sewing machine cannot put this heavy zipper in. I really need a machine designed to do these repairs.
The calls are still coming on cell phones. This time it was on Bethany’s. She leaves her phone in the car and doesn’t take it to work. When she checked, there was a message from a foreign speaking woman looking for Zachary for some important business. The next message was from (it sounded like the same man that had called last week using Officer Scott from Remsen’s name) saying he had to get in touch with Zachary to get Bethany out of jail! She has blocked both of these calls, but chances are that they will find another way. If they know about cell phone numbers, what else about the person do they know?
I received information on an arrest made of a Le Mars man and a woman from Marcus. The woman’s name was not given as it would make her underage daughter known. Both of these adult people have been in the February, March, and May (2020) Marcus News papers. They and many others have been connected with their crimes. I did put include this report following the City’s Special Meeting, April 26.
We attended the MMCRU High School’s Spring Concert on Thur. April 29. These students really did well! They have a large contest coming up at Newell-Fonda on Friday, May 7. Here’s hoping they do well!
The month of May is busy with last minute school affairs. At least there will be a graduation this year although last year’s drive through was different, there was nothing wrong with it.
The PEO Chapter FM usually holds a Purse with a Purpose brunch, but last year this was impossible. This year they are still not having the brunch but will be posting posters over town stating details on one beautiful quilt being raffled off. Two $500 scholarships will be given to two graduating MMCRU High School girls with the proceeds from this quilt. Betty Rutter and Janette Woodall have donated their time, talents and expenses to make this quilt available for the raffle. Who wouldn’t like a new cover for their bed? Check this one out!
There is some information on a policy insurance plan for water damages to property owners_internal and external that an area city was confronted with. The Company wanted to put the information on the City’s letterhead when sending out letters to property owners. Just think, a city could make 10% off each endorsement! The City in question decided that it was too risky and when taken a vote from this City Council, the motion died. (I hope our city doesn’t get involved in this one just to make some extra money.)
This warm weather has brought flowers to bloom and also dandelions! It doesn’t do any good to try and dig them up as their roots go every which way. There are some sprays that don’t even seem to attack them. However, for the person that makes dandelion wine, this is what he wants the more the merrier!
I called Lois Allen, Scott’s mother, to tell her of the calls from the person saying he was “Officer Scott”. She said she couldn’t understand how this/these people are getting cell numbers. She said she receives about two calls each week about helping her with her credit cards that are in “trouble”. She probably doesn’t even have a credit card! But, she knows when not to listen to these people while there are others that are really taken on by the caller. She did laugh when Officer Scott wanted Zachary to bail Bethany out of jail! You would have thought the caller would have remembered that Scott was Zachary’s brother-in-law from the first call he made.
The other Sunday I was listening to a sermon on television that made a point of telling people that you don’t have to always try and be better than the next person. You will spend more time trying to outdo your friend or neighbor than what it is worth. An explanation was a 2-sided coin. One side had “comparison” on it and the other side had “jealously”. No matter what side the coin was when the coin was flipped, you were a loser. Suggestion was to throw it up and let the wind carry it wherever so you could live a better life. Not everyone can be responsible for what others do_don’t distance yourself because of someone else’s faults.
Remember the MMCRU FFA Greenhouse sale on May 7 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. and May 8 from 8:00 to Noon. The students have been growing and harvesting multiple types of plants that are for sale. I think they can be bought with a “free will offering” check this out. Have you wondered what is in the shed to the north of the Greenhouse? Now is the time to check out the new Animal Science Center.
Remember to keep in your prayers and thoughts those who have lost loved ones to death, are trying to find a job, struggling to make ends meet, or are distant from their family. Count your blessings.
I will leave you with this quote from “Cooking with Us” a Cleghorn Christian Church book from 1976: “The average person doesn’t believe in signs unless they are pointing the way he wants to go.”
