Fire and Rescue Volunteer Increase
Seven new fire department members were approved by the City Council. Fire Chief, Russ Hansen had recommended Derrick Erdman, Jon Schmillen, Gage Johnson, Mason Carve, Brandon Dreckman, Eli Schlenger, and Morgan Fudge. The Marcus Fire Department will now have junior fire fighters and one nurse that is EMT only.
Joe Frangione was approved to serve a 5-year term on Planning & Zoning. Todd Martin was approved to serve a 5-year term on the Board of Adjustments.
Doug Dreckman reported they were doing patch work on some streets. Two cracked storm drains were found on Railroad Street. This weekend the playground equipment will be installed by MAC.
Police Chief Flikeid had had two mental health transports, had removed a dog from town, and that he has been appointed to the Rolling Hills Mental Health Board. Marcus will be hosting around 40 police on July 20 when the Iowa Attorney General meeting will be held in Marcus.
On June 15, 2023 at approximately 8:45 p.m., the Marcus Police Department arrested Jalisa Swartz, 27 years old of Marcus on a warrant issued for her arrest for Theft 5th Degree. Swartz was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Cherokee County Jail where she was held in lieu of $300 bond.

On June 21, 2023 at approximately 5 p.m. the Marcus Police Department responded to a report of an ongoing Domestic Assault in the 200 block of N Beech St. On arrival, officers located a bleeding female victim. It was alleged that Jalisa Swartz, 27 years old of Marcus assaulted the victim by impeding her airway and causing minor bodily injuries. While taking Swartz into custody, Swartz refused orders and resisted being taken into custody. Swartz was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, an Aggravated Misdemeanor and Interference with Official Acts, a Simple Misdemeanor. Swartz was transported to the Cherokee County Jail where she was for an appearance before a Magistrate. The Marcus Police Department was assisted during this incident by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Remsen Police Department.

On June 23, 2023, Pedro Mendoza Compuzano, 24 years old of Marcus was arrested on a warrant filed for by the Marcus Police Department. Compuzano charge stems from a June 22, 2023 incident during which Officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of South Locust Street regarding a domestic dispute. Compuzano is accused of assaulting his live-in girlfriend before fleeing their residence prior to Officers arrival. Compuzano was booked in the Cherokee County Jail on the warrant issued for his arrest for; Domestic Abuse Assault, a simple misdemeanor. The Marcus Police Department was assisted during this incident by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 23, 2023, the Marcus Police Department responded to the area of L36 and C60 to assist with a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries. This report also included that one of the vehicles involved was engulfed in flames. As a result of this accident two were transported to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, with one of those being transported Wings Air.
On June 30, 2023, the Marcus Police Department per an agreement with Cherokee County assisted in completing a Medicolegal Death Investigation on behalf of the Cherokee County Medical Examiner’s Office.
On June 30, 2023, the Marcus Police Department responded to two reports of an unsupervised child reporting she was hungry and locked out of her home for days. This child was located and it was determined that they were not a resident of Marcus. As a result, the Marcus Police Department assisted the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Health and Human Services with the ongoing investigation. At this time the child has been taken into protective custody and is safe. This investigation is ongoing.
Effective July 1, 2023, Police Chief Brian Flikeid was assigned to the Rolling Hills Mental Health Governance Board. Brian who previously sat on the Advisory Board will now be the regions Law Enforcement Representative. The Rolling Hills Mental Health region covers Cherokee, Buena Vista, Pocahontas, Humboldt, Woodbury, Ida, Sac, Calhoun, Crawford and Carroll Counties. The States Mental Health Regions have been established by legislation to assist in addressing the growing mental health need of citizens.
On July 3, 2023, the Marcus Police Department responded to an on-going issue involving a habitually at large dog. The dog owner recognizing they could not properly care for the animal surrendered the dog. With the assistance of the Wet Nose Animal Rescue in Le Mars the dog will be rehomed.
