Fifty-Nine Grind to Come to Marcus
Darrell Downs introduced Will Miller and wife, Jennifer Miller at the Monday Marcus City Council meeting. They were there to tell of their business—Fifty-Nine Grind that is coming to Marcus. The business will be in the former United Bank of Iowa building located at 100 N. Pine. The middle of July is the proposed date of opening. The coffee shop will serve a light breakfast and lunch. A 59 Grind sign is to be hung at the north entrance at Cedar alley entryway directing those to the drive-thru. This sign was approved by Ebert, Jenness, and Enneking with Schmillen abstaining. Outdoor sitting was also discussed at this time.
Beside City Council minutes and Bills, other items under “Consent” agenda were enacted with one motion. 1. Approve Resolution #23-20—“Resolution Setting salaries for Appointed and Employees of City of Marcus, Iowa for July 2023 -June 2024”. 2. Approve Resolution #23-21—“Transfer of Funds”. 3. Approve Resolution #23-22—“Resolution Directing the City Clerk to Publish Notice of Hearing on the Adoption of the Proposed Code of Ordinance of the City of Marcus, Iowa”. 4. Approve Resolution #23-23—“Setting Public Hearing for Clubhouse Project”. 5. Approve Silversmith Data contract. (This was GPS Software for Public Works.) 6. Approve Tax Abatement Application for Philip Dorr. 7. Approve Casey’s Cigarette Permit and Liquor License.
Public Works reported that the playground area located south of the swimming pool—the cement had been poured and rubber tiles are to be placed on the cement. The swimming pool had a leak the first week it was opened but is not leaking anymore. There are to be street lines painted in the coming weeks as well as street repairs.
Bids will be sent out for the Clubhouse construction on June 15. There was discussion on the disease that has affected Ash trees. Discussion was also on Ash Borer Tree removal in the parking. A list will be started at City Hall and Public Works will cut the trees down. Grants will be looked into for this.
Police Chief Flikeid reported that the old police car has not had any offers and he will check to donate it to the YES Center. His monthly report is as follows: On May, 18, 2023 the Marcus Police Department responded to a report of an ongoing custody dispute. The Marcus Police Department was made aware that a juvenile in the custody of his mother and step-father was court ordered to be in the custody of the child’s father in Illinois. The Marcus Police Department also learned that several court orders had been issued and ignored in an attempt to resolve the issue and have the juvenile returned to the custody of the child’s father without Police involvement. As a result of these ignored orders and court dates, the courts issued an order to be served by Law Enforcement. The Marcus Police Department served this order, removed the child, and transported the child to Waterloo, IA to meet with and return the child to the custody of his father. The Marcus Police Department was assisted during this incident by citizens that provided a child safety seat, blankets, and snacks for the transport of the child.
On May 20, 2023 at approximately 12 o’clock p.m., the Marcus Police Department arrested Bailey Wilkie, 19 years old of Marcus on a warrant issued out of Buena Vista County for her arrest. Wilkie was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Cherokee County Jail. Wilkie was processed on the issued warrant for Failure to Appear, original charge; Assault. Wilkie was released from custody after a $300 cash bond was posted.

On May 22, 2023 the Marcus Police Department arrested Christopher Willson, 34 years old of Holstein, IA. Willson was arrested on a warrant issued for—Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine) 3rd Offense, a Class D Felony. Willson was booked into the Cherokee County Jail and was later released after a $5, 000 bond was posted.

On June 1, 2023 Amber Grantham, 33 years old and Cole Sand, 26 years old both of Marcus were arrested on warrants filed for by the Marcus Police Department for Child Endangerment. The pair are alleged to have exposed or allowed the exposer of a child in their care to methamphetamine. Both were released from jail after posting bond. The Marcus Police Department was assisted during this investigation by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.

On June 5, 2023 the Marcus Police Department, along with the Cherokee Country Sheriff’s Office, responded to a residence in the 400 block of N Beech Street in an effort to locate Micah Petersen, 24 years old of Cleghorn. Petersen was being sought on an Arrest Warrant issued for—Violation of Probation original charges; Going Armed with Intent x3 and Harassment 1st Degree. While attempting to make contact, Petersen fled the residence resulting in Officers giving chase. Petersen was captured after a short foot pursuit and was taken into custody without further incident. Petersen was transported to the Cherokee County Jail where he was booked in on the warrant issued for his arrest. Petersen was additionally charged with Interference with Official Acts. Petersen was held in lieu of $5,000 bond.

The regular meeting of the Marcus City Council was held June 12, 2023 in City Hall at 5 o’clock p.m. with Mayor Bunt presiding. Council members present were Ebert, Jenness, Enneking, and Schmillen. Absent: Frangione.
