110 Years Ago – 1913
Dan Melter, A.H. Heller, S.B. Conaway, NT. Wells and Ed Rose are the five surviving veterans in Marcus to be hon­ored on Memorial Day, Friday, May 30th. The 14 veterans buried in the local cemetery will also be remembered with graves decorated.
Lillian Lane, Arthur O’Neal, Jessie Weise and H. Love graduated from Meriden High School Wednesday evening, May 28th.

105 Years Ago -1918
Philomena Kelly returned to her home in Farley after several months visit here.
Gus Goebel, Roy Imhoff and Pat Meylor enlisted in the navy and will leave this week for the Great Lake Naval Training Station in Chicago.
Robert H. Peavey died in his home after a year of declining health.

95 Years Ago -1928
Mr. and Mrs. John Ernster, for­merly of Marcus, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their home at Hollywood, Calif.
Esther Piercy and Max Roberts were united in marriage in the St. Joseph Church at Milford May 9.
Mrs. John Woodall was surprised on her birthday with her children and their families celebrating at dinner and supper.
ME. Reed of Sioux City has been secured by the Marcus Municipal Band as leader for the season.
Specials at Delaney’s Grocery this week are margarine, 21¢ lb.; maple syrup, 5 lb. can 45¢; Royal Ann cherries, No. 2 1/2 can, 30¢; and powdered sugar, 10¢ lb.

85 Years Ago -1938
Mrs. Addie B. Rae passed away in her home at Los Angeles, Calif., after being in -poor health for several months. Burial will take place in Marcus-Amherst cemetery.
Twelve carloads of gravel for the paving work were unloaded at the depot.
Mrs. Elizabeth Dorr quietly observed her 96th birthday May 6.
Mrs. Carl J. Petersen departed on a long journey to Denmark after a quarter century absence from her native home.
Mr. and Mrs. E.A. McGee are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter born on Mother’s Day, May 8.
Marcus had a blizzard of snow, May 7, with a peculiar rumble of thunder accompanying the storm.
Constance Dalton was honored on her 6th birthday at a party in the Earl Flanagan home.

80 Years Ago – 1943
An honor roll board on the Marcus Municipal Building grounds is being constructed.
Norma Jean Mclntire is the winner of the annual poem contest of Chero­kee County rural schools.
Margaret Hey began her duties in the Farmers State Bank.
A transaction of interest has been completed wherein the local lodge of Masons have purchased the Brink building for their temple.

75 Years Ago -1948
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ogren enter­tained at dinner and supper Sunday in honor of their son, Gerald, for his recent confirmation and graduation from eighth, grade.
The senior class of Marcus public high school enjoyed a hotdog roast and picnic at the playground.
Mrs. William Witter and Ruth attended the dedication services of the Yearbook at Westmar College at Le Mars. The dedication of the book was in honor of Eldon Dann, instructor at the college and friend of the Witter family.
Pastor and Mrs. Grimm, Florence Dorr and Arlys Hanno attended the Walther League rally at Climbing Hill.
Others attending from Trinity Luther­an Church were Vernon Grauer and Loren Kauffmann.

70 Years Ago -1953
Devera Wendt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wendt, of Marcus will be among the 205 young people who will receive degrees from Wayne State Teachers College.
Paul Addy, the seven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Addy, who farm northwest of Marcus, is the first polio victim in this community. Fortunately, his case seems to be light.
Leon Bentz, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bentz, was named valedictorian of the graduating class of Holy Name. Claire Meehan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meehan, earned highest grades during the last year.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Jenkins were honored by relatives and friends on their 40th wedding anniversary in the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Galles.
Miss Lois Wenger left for St. Paul, Minn. She had taught the kindergarten the past three weeks in Germantown. Miss Mary Pauling will teach the remainder of the year.

Mike Slota left by auto for a visit to his former home at Allentown, Pa. Mike, a native of Poland, will meet a brother, Herman, whom he has not seen since leaving Poland some 40 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Wilcox of Cleghorn are parents of a boy born May 13.
Mr. and Mrs. James Cave announce the arrival of a daughter, Betty Lorraine, born May 14.
Mr. and Mrs. Derald Hendrickson of Tucson, Ariz., became parents of a girl born May 16.
Mr. and Mrs. Nels Pallesen were honored at an open house on their 40th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wendt received word from their son, Pfc. Francis Wendt, that he left Korea for the United States.

60 Years Ago -1963
Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Johnson are the parents of a daughter born May 11. She has been named Tamara Joan.
Vance Bruce Marquis, nine-year-old son of Col. and Mrs. Vance Marquis, was painfully burned about his feet’ when he attempted to speed up a trash fire with gasoline.
A bridal shower complimented Leone Alesch May 6 in Holy Name Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvyn Greene enter­tained after the baccalaureate and commencement exercises in honor of their daughter Linda.
The Marcus Lumber Company has made formal announcement of its new residential addition to the town of Marcus. The addition is on what was part of the Ellis Holmes farm and is located west of the community school grounds.
The sale of the Marcus Econ-o-Wash to Robert Bean of Akron was an­nounced this week by Harry B. Nelson, also of Akron. Mr. and Mrs. Bean will move to Marcus in the near future.

55 Years Ago -1968
Joe Wurth, Michael Theisen, Ann Bortscheller and Susan Sokolowski of Marcus received their diplomas from St. Mary’s High School at Remsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Franck are the parents of a 6 lb. 5 oz. daughter born May 13. She has been named Tern Kay.
Julie Benson of Cleghorn was hon­ored at a bridal shower May 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus.
Eric Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Nelson, underwent a tonsillec­tomy at Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee.
Reg Pallesen and Lawrence Ross-man have been chosen from the high school juniors of Marcus to represent Boys State at Camp Dodge in Des Moines.

50 Years Ago -1973
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ruden of Remsen will be guest of honor at an open house in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary on June 3.
Lois Bunt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Bunt, will graduate on June 1st from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in
Jani Grauer, bride-elect of Tom Irwin, was honored at a miscellaneous shower May 11 at Trinity Lutheran Church parlors.
John Bentz, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bentz, was rushed by ambulance from Cherokee Clinic to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City after having been injured during a softball game in phys. ed. class.
Tom Kerr received the degree of Master of Social Work from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla. He is working at the Montanan Residential Treatment Center in Hialeah, Fla.

45 Years Ago – 1978
Mark VerSteeg and Jan Waddell, Meriden-Cleghorn seniors received the Jones-Smith awards and Mitch Anderson was the recipient of the David Birch $100 schol­arship.
Ray Means is the lone se­nior in the Marcus Eaglet Se­nior Sidelight. He hopes to have his own farm some day.

40 Years Ago –1983
Winning awards at Marcus Athletic Banquet were Craig Lehan-the Rosburg Sheila Letsche, the Witter and Tom Rupp the Hanson certificate. Donna Drefke was the win­ner of the Gund award for the highest grades at Marcus Community High and Jim Glackin won the Lion’s ,for second highest grades of the Class of 1983.

35 Years Ago – 1988
Mark Glackin will attend the 30th Hugh OBrian Youth Foundation Leadership Semi­nar June 3,4,and 5 at Drake University at Des Moines. He was nominated by his school and sponsored by the Farmer’s State Bank.
Meriden-Cleghorn gradu­ated 24 seniors May 22. Their motto “We came as strang­ers, grew as friends and leave as one”.
Dawn Perkins and Dean Rassel are featured in the Meriden-Cleghorn Senior Spotlight. Dawn will attend ISU and Dean hopes to get rich.

30 Years Ago – 1993
Former Marcusite, Howard McConnell, died May 20th at Phoenix, Az. He was a 1942 graduate of Marcus High School. Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter and a sister.
Donna Hanson was awarded the Witter scholar­ship, Chris Bork, the Rosburg and Tony Roethler, the Marvin Hanson Outstanding Sopho­more certificate.
Wendy Rainboth, Tammy Hinspeter, Cara Scott and Matt Rosener are featured in the Free in ‘93 column. Wendy, Cara and Matt plan to attend college and Tammy did not indicate her plans.

25 Years Ago – 1998
The QQC Committee Chair­man, Steve Smith, presented the Marcus Ambulance Fund with $7,500, MEDCO with $1,500, $500 to MMC Athletic program and $500 to the MMC Music Boosters.
Michelle Gravenish and Chad Henderson are planning a Sept. 26, 1988 wedding in Holy Name Church at Marcus.
Esther Bjork celebrated her 103rd birthday May 14th. An­drew Mogensen will turn 104 in Sept. Both are residents in the Marcus Heartland Care Center.
