Flowers and Beef – A Lot Alike!
May is noted for “flowers” and “Beef Month,” and ironically both are remarkably similar. Wondering about the commonalities? Take a breather and read on!
Flowers and cattle are good for the environment. Flowers add to the biodiversity of the environment and are a food source for insects. Cattle graze land unsuitable for growing crops, thereby preserving wildlife habitat while converting grass into beef.
Flowers and beef are nutritious. Edible flowers not only increase the appearance of food, but some provide Vitamin A, C, riboflavin, niacin, and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, and potassium). Beef supplies ten essential nutrients (high quality protein, zinc, iron, and B vitamins) that promote a healthy lifestyle.
Flowers and cattle are prominent at sporting events. Roses, Black-Eyed Susan’s, and Carnations will soon blanket the winning horses at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. Did you know all pro footballs are made of cowhide leather? And Wilson Sporting Goods supplies 27,000 footballs in one NFL season!
Flowers and beef are prevalent at holidays. For instance, carnations have long been the official flower for Mother’s Day, and poppies have symbolized Memorial Day. At Christmas, a lot of family dinners feature Prime Rib, and the 4th of July would not be complete without smoked brisket or a hot-dog (beef, of course)!
Flowers and cattle are associated with quotes. Quotes mentioning flowers include stop and smell the roses, fresh as a daisy, nip it in the bud, and bloom where you are planted. Likewise, there are beef quotes – till the cows come home, take the bull by the horns, strong as an ox, and hit the bullseye.
Flowers and beef are great gifts. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are two of the biggest holidays of the year for flower sales and flower deliveries. And to go along with those holidays, consider giving a beef certificate redeemable for a beef dinner at their favorite restaurant!
Flowers and cattle can be relaxing. This definitely depends on what you are doing with them! Most of us consider weeding the flower bed or fixing fence as work. But strolling through a park with flowers in full bloom or watching calves frolic and play is soothing to the soul…Enjoy May flowers and May Beef Month!
