Personal Mention
by Elaine Rassel I was surprised on Tuesday morning when the phone rang and it was Louise Ferrin calling. I had found an article back in 1983 where she had adopted twin boys from El Salvador. There was quite a story on how she had gone through an adoption agency in Texas for one child. When she went to go and bring him back, she was told he had a twin brother. Would she take both of them? One child was over $7,000 and now she would have to find money for a second one.
With all the problems our border is having with children crossing, I wanted to tell a story where there actually was a “legal” crossing for these two boys. I had no idea where they were and wrote Charles Ferrin with my problem. He called Louise (his sister) and now she called me. The boys are now 42 years old. She is going to send me an update on them. I can hardly wait!
Last week I received a call from the Dakota Dunes. In answering it, the man asked how Elaine was. Then he said he was on a recording and wanted to speak to the “lady of the house”. I said, “She isn’t here”. He hung up. Now just before Louise’s call, the same man came on again asking for Jesse. I said he wasn’t here but the recording went on. He was asking how Jesse felt about Facebook and Twitter letting Trump use them. I hung up. I wonder who he will be calling that lives at my phone number, next?!
Zachary received a cell phone call from Officer Scott from the Remsen Police Department telling him he had a credit card that was okayed but it would take 7-10 days before it could be activated. However, someone had taken something off this card already and the caller, if Zachary would send him some $, he could get the card activated sooner and find out about the money already taken off this card. Zachary said, “Who did you say this is?” “Officer Scott from the Remsen Police Department,” was the answer. “Well,” Zachary said, “I happen to know Officer Scott as he is my brother-in-law!” Down went the caller’s phone! Zachary said this caller wasn’t a professional and not even close to being an amateur! (If the credit card wasn’t activated yet, how was anyone supposed to have taken something off of it?!) Too bad these scammers don’t get off the couch and find a job.
Saturday was the Prom. This year the students did get a Prom as last year, COVID-19 made sure it was not to happen. There were not as many people there as had been in past years. Some years there were people that sat on the apron of the stage and others stood up behind them. These people blocked the view of those sitting in the stage bleachers. Not this year. We could see everything.
I only wish that the Prom Court would stay for a minute so pictures could be taken. As soon as the King and Queen are crowned_they scatter! So, at that point, all I can get is a picture of the King and Queen and I have to go and find them in order to get a “together” picture of them. This year the King even used a microphone to call to the Queen who was at the far opposite end of the gym. No luck as the noise was so loud, the microphone didn’t work. Finally, someone did go through the crowd and get the Queen.
All the ones in the Prom looked so nice. The dresses were beautiful, no matter what color they were. It was the formal event that this year they got to celebrate.
They were at an “after Prom party” at the Remsen school from midnight to 3:30 a.m. Thanks to those who sponsored this party and made the Prom a safe after-Prom with memories never to be forgotten.
I have fooled with my hair long enough trying to keep some curl in it with rollers and hairpins. I have too many events coming up and don’t have time so, Monday afternoon I’m getting a permanent. I wasn’t blessed with natural curls so have to go the other route!
The mowing season has arrived and I won’t see much of those mowing until it gets so dark they can’t see.
I couldn’t help but see the lawn ornaments on Kay Dettmann’s lawn Saturday.
Someone was going to make sure others knew it was her birthday!
I’ve been hearing on television about paying by palm. I finally found a newspaper article that explained what this was. Amazon is striving at some whole foods grocery stores that are near their headquarters to introduce a pay by palm technology to make paying quicker and more convenient.
They have called this technology, Amazon One. Shoppers can scan the palm of their hand and connect it to a credit card or their Amazon account. This set up takes less than a minute where shoppers can scan their hand at the register to pay for groceries. This way they don’t have to have any wallets with them.
This technology was started by Amazon late last year and at this time they said it could be used at office buildings, stadiums, and other retailers. Well, Amazon hasn’t announced any takers as of yet but has said it has signed up thousands of users, but haven’t provided any specific numbers.
Just how safe is this method of payment? Privacy experts have put out a warning against the use by companies of biometric data, such as face or palm scans, because of the risk of it being hacked and stolen. How does Amazon answer to this warning? It says the it keeps the palm images in a secure part of its cloud and doesn’t store the information on the Amazon One device. They also stated that shoppers can ask for their information to be deleted at any time. Is it really worth having your account being hacked into just to save some time?
Remember in your prayers and thoughts those who have lost family members recently to death, those who have health problems, those who are struggling with finances or who have no job, or have lost connections with family members, or those who are lonely. Count your blessings.
I will leave you with this quote from columnist Leonard Pitts, “Life is always throwing curves. We have no control over that. What we can control is how we respond.”
