Personal Mention
I want to begin with, “Thank You” whoever you were, that paid for my much needed permanent wave at the beauty shop! I was not born with much hair and it certainly didn’t come in curly! It lasts for 2 months and then the third month, I go with rollers and hair pins in until the end of the third month. I guess I really shouldn’t complain as there are some that would love to have some of my hair to replace what they are missing.
I also began this week with trouble with the computer again—what’s new?! This time I couldn’t print anything out as the inks weren’t accepted by the printer. Bethany put in new black ink and it still said the same. We decided it must be the colored ink that needed replacing. If I didn’t use color when printing, why would this be the reason? I’m going to get a colored ink and hope it is the answer to the problems.
Then I had pulled up an article from my files and while trying to just print one page I needed, when I went to look, not that page but another page was completely missing. I went to my back log of newspapers and found the page and will have to put it back in the file complete. Even the margins have been changing again.
I was reading Kathy Yoder’s article the other day where she said most of her articles were missing “r” as that letter was hard to get to come up. I have that trouble with the capitol “C”. If any letter is missing, it is generally the “C”. She said she finally decided she needed a new computer. I hope this isn’t my problem—computers are not cheap.
The last storm we had, we didn’t set out the recycle can as we didn’t think anyone was picking up during a blizzard. Now we have an over abundance of recycle items since they did pick up during the storm.
Well, we were advised already Wed. of bad weather coming in on Saturday. It did come and dumped a few more inches of snow on top of the snow and ice we already have. I walked up to the beauty shop on Friday to be there at 1 p.m. I got as far as the alley and couldn’t use the neighbor’s sidewalk (that was scooped) because there was a 2 foot pile of snow at the start of his sidewalk that was left after someone pushed snow down the alley. So, I had to find a good spot on the alley and venture into the street. I was walking, facing the traffic, but had to stop several times when a vehicle came down that way. There was no traffic from the other direction where the vehicle could have gone in part of that lane, but no, it had to keep coming and I supposed to see who was walking. It took me 20 minutes to get there and I was sure glad Bethany came to pick me up. I don’t mind walking, but this ice has been terrible and it isn’t worth it to fall.
Many churches were cancelled on Sunday due to a wind chill. It really was cold and not worth it to get out. The only thing at our house that I have to watch so it doesn’t get out is the kitten. It had never seen snow but sure likes to travel in it with me running behind trying to catch it. The outside door just doesn’t close fast enough and the kitten makes its get-away then!
Lately we have been informed of classified documents being found in former President Trump’s home in Florida, some found in President Biden’s home and garage and some found in former Vice President Pence’s place. I ran across an article where some classified documents came to life from 1984! So these mislaid documents were just as much around then as now.
A 13 year old girl, Kristin Preble took papers to school as a show-and-tell project for her 8th grade class. He father had found them in his Cleveland hotel room years earlier and took them home as a souvenir. In other words, other presidents have let classified documents lay around out of place.
Two days after the 1980 debate, businessman Alan Preble found the papers in his Cleveland hotel room that were apparently left behind by Carter press secretary, Jody Powell. Preble took them home as a keepsake. The family had looked through them and thought they weren’t that interesting. However, Kristin thought maybe they’d be interesting for show-and-tell.
The teacher saw warnings on the documents that said, “Classified, Confidential, Executive, and Property of the United States Government.” That night, the teacher and his family looked over the documents. One was marked “Iran” and Libya was also on some of the papers. The teacher couldn’t reach the family of the girl that had brought in the papers, so he called the F.B.I. The papers were four inches thick.
The discovery of these papers led into an investigation by a Democratic-led congressional committee of the official Carter papers obtained by the winning Reagan campaign.
The Reagan Justice Department declined calls by the committee to appoint a special counsel in that matter. Meanwhile a court case trying to force that appointment failed and no criminal case was brought. While debategate faded, the concern over how classified documents are handled by those in power hasn’t.
What grade did Kristin get on this show-and-tell? She earned a niche in history and a “B” on the show-and-tell.
Cats and dogs are not the only pets some people have. In Hong Kong, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, where most apartments range from small to miniscule, rabbits are popular pets. Now tht COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted there, more people are traveling and especially for the Lunar New Year to welcome the Year of the Rabbit!
They can take their rabbit to “Bunny Style”, where the owner, Donna Li, keeps her charges happy with regular exercise, parties, spa treatments and lots of hay. Her idea was to set up a safe indoor play space with a suitable temperature for rabbits. But, when people wanted to travel, she knew that there was a need for “boarding facilities” while they were gone.
She already has bookings for 15 rabbits for Easter, the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. In addition to feeding, some owners order special vegetable cakes in advance, and there is also hair-brushing, nail trimming and exercising included in the boarding of the rabbits.
The owner believes rabbits can sense if someone is nice to them. She talks to them and tells them are cute they are. She also provides livestream and video clips so the owner knows what is going on with their pet rabbit. Bunny Style charges about $15 per night, and that includes half an hour of supervised play time. Beauty treatments and special menu items are extra.
Just like the number of animals that the Humane Society get after the holidays, shelters are temporarily housing 42 rabbits given up by their owners. Valentine’s Day, Easter or Christmas seem to be the times that people get pets but after a few months, decide they are too much trouble and take them to a shelter.
Remember in your thoughts and prayers those who have lost loved ones to death, have had their lives changed, have health problems some of which are terminal, are still trying to make ends meet even though they have a job, and be with those who are still trying to shorten the distance between family/friends by making a bridge instead of a wall. Count your blessings!
I will close with this quote from Frederick Douglas (1818-1895) American author: “The soul that is within me no man can degrade.”
