130 Years Ago -1893
John Metcalf of Paullina sold George Prunty of Marcus thirty hogs that averaged 457 pounds. John raised the hogs on his place just north of Marcus.
Mr. P.J. Keogan, “Phil”, 37 years old, died of consumption in his home. He was born in Ireland.
Mrs. Patrick Londergan, 54, passed away here on Jan. 8, 1893. She was born in
Micheltown, Ireland and came the USA when she was 18 years old.
125 Years Ago -1898
The people of Marcus sat outside here on Jan. 9th, a rare happening.
Andrew Rae, Jr. of Amherst was chosen by the board of supervisors as overseer of the poor in Cherokee County.
L. Gund purchased the fine farm of Mr. Fenton just east of Marcus – one of the largest and finest in this county.
110 Years Ago -1903
We are told that Dr. Fry purchased A. Naffziger’s interest in the Fry-Naffziger drug store and will conduct the business.
The large bus used by C.P. Connolly to convey the country children to and from school was blown over by the hard wind. There was only one passenger and no one was hurt.
Miss Alice Failing of Cleghorn was united in marriage to John C. Montague of Washta on Dec. 19. They will make their home at Washta.
110 Years Ago – 1913
Titcomb’s Toggery at Marcus advertises “Correct clothes that fit you.”
The town of Meriden was aroused early by the fire bell. The blaze in the home of Mrs. Bruce was quickly extinguished without much damage done.
Ernest Wells of Tilden Township purchased a five passenger car from Johnson, Petty and Johnson for $637.50.
Miss Hallie Fry will room at the Amos Keller home, Miss Marie Fry will make her home with the J.W. Nield family, and Kenneth Fry accompanied his uncle, Carl Fry, to New York.
105 Years Ago -1918
The state board of health gives new parents ten days to christen newborn babies and report their births.
The Rev. G.R. Gilbert is guaranteed as their daughter, Ruth, has diptheria.
John Mangels has traded his pool hall business to Eichhorn and Willenberg of Remsen for their livery and garage business there.
Vincent Walsh has landed in England with the Rainbow Division.
Lars Anderson plans to move to town early in the spring and sell his farm, etc. at a public auction.
Ladies skirts will be longer and narrower this season.
95 Years Ago -1928
Mrs. Grace Knox was installed as Worthy Matron of the Marcus Chapter of O.E.S.
Rose Marie Lauters and Henry J. Alesch will be married Jan. 25.
The Thompson Motor Co. unloaded a carload of new Chevrolets with many of the new improvements, such as thermostat cooling, shock absorbing springs and four wheel brakes.
A.H. Denlinger of Grand Meadow was elected chairman of the Cherokee County Board of Supervisors.
90 Years Ago -1933
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Grauer are parents of a son born last Saturday.
Mrs. Mary Agnes Riley and Joseph Tschill, two well-known Marcus citizens, passed away this week.
Members of Trinity League entertained their parents at a banquet and program Monday evening:
Sybill Swanson, a beauty operator in Sioux City, enjoyed the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Swanson.
85 Years Ago -1938
Vida Nelson has been hired as history teacher in the Public School. She is from Villisca.
Ardyth Mae Hamilton broke her right wrist after falling off her sled on the playground slide.
Mrs. Ruth Rae was installed as Worthy Matron of the Marcus Chapter of O.E.S.
Mrs. Mary Jane McClimon passed away Jan. 13th in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gregg Kennedy, with home she was making her home.
Ed Polson, a farmer living north of Marcus, had an auto accident last week. He escaped injury, but his car was wrecked.
K. W. Nagle will be manager of the skating rink and operates the Japanese Gardens every week this Winter.
Melvin Dorr played Santa Claus to the local telephone employees for the West Iowa Telephone company and presented them with a turkey.
80 Years Ago – 1943
The public school fifth grade, with Miss Goodenow as teacher, have a news station. Donald Heesch was their first announcer with Jimmie Bork as foreign newscaster, Margaret Rae – national, and Pauline Witter – local.
Clinton Weber is slowly regaining the use of his legs after his recent accident.
Three local tire boards have been set up and car owners must have their tires inspected. The Marcus gas rationing panel announces that 1,100 rationing books were issued to approximately 700 people:
Jethro Stowater is advertising a public sale to be held at the farm south of Marcus.

Mrs. John Petersen, 78, died last Sunday after being in ill health for several years.
John Apel, 67, died early Sunday morning at his home. He had been in normal health, apparently dying from a heart attack.

Gordon and Donald Garvin will hold a farm sale January 8, offering 64 head of cattle, farm machinery and miscellaneous equipment.

Merle Spieler and Jeanne Delaney reigned as King and Queen over homecoming festivities at Holy Name. The Wildcats defeated IC of Cherokee 64-19. Jim Smith and his orchestra played for the dance.
Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hogue are the parents of an 8 lb. 14 oz. daughter, Jill De Meris, born Sunday, Jan. 5.
Don Anderson of Dayton, IA, has accepted the position of manager of the Farmers Co-operative Elevator here, made vacant by the recent resignation of Joe Comp.
Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Schlenger announce the arrival of a son, Ted Nickolas.
John Leavitt of the Marcus Lumber Co., is president of the Marcus Commercial Club, advancing from vice president and succeeding his brother, Roger, to the president’s job.
A son Kirk Douglas was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Alesch.
60 Years Ago -1963
Peter Block, 16 of rural Marcus, received head injuries when he was thrown from a horse into a tree. Pete is a junior at Holy Name.
The Gaylord Smith family has moved into their recently completed home on Fenton St.
Some 500 people braved below zero weather Sunday p.m. to attend the dedication program of the new Community Medical Center and a tour of the building.
Fritzie Wilkens, 53, a life-long resident of Marcus, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 6, following several years of ill health.
Berdine Shefstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Shefstad of Marcus, has accepted a position with Hulac’s in Omaha

Dr. and Mrs. D.E. Hairues flew to Las Vegas, Jan. 4, where he attended a three day Parker Research Seminar. Seventeen hundred registered for the course.
David Joslin departed for the Naval Base at Charleston, S.C. for a six year enrollment.
Marcus Eagles defeated Willow 73 to 53. The Eaglettes also scored a 75-64 victory over Willow.
Peggy Sand returned to her home at Los Angeles after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Sand and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Ohlendorf announce the engagement of their daughter, Connie, to Dick Holmes, son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Holmes.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Sampler of Denver, CO, announce the arrival of a son born Tuesday, Dec. 19. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ogren of Sioux City became parents of their first child, a son, born December 30, 1967.
50 Years Ago -1973
Steve Geringer, an inspector with Wells Fargo Co. at the Sioux City airport, has been promoted to Sgt.
Former Marcus resident, Miss Luella Toomey, 72, died at a Sioux City hospital Jan. 4, 1973. She worked for the telephone office here until 1931. She is survived by a brother and two sisters. Funeral services were in Holy Name Church, Marcus with burial in the local cemetery.
45 Years Ago – 1978
Cleghorn city clerk, Claudia Goodrich, was rehired and her salary was raised to $200 per month. Lawrence Goodrich was reappointed city treasurer and Dennis Green was named city attorney.
Debbie Means, Jeannie Meehan and Mary Simons are three senior who finished their high school at the end of the first semester, Jan. 12.
40 Years Ago –1983
Marcus Eaglettes defeated the Akron-Westfield club 58 to 55. Donna Dreckman netted 33 points and sister, Cheryl, added 15.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rupp and Jackie Rupp flew to California to visit Dianne Rupp. They attended the Rose Bowl parade.
35 Years Ago – 1988
Mrs. Merle Sand returned home after spending time with her son, Jim Sand. She left Dec. 24th and returned Jan. 5th. Jim had heart surgery at Mesa, AZ.
The Meriden-Cleghorn school board stood by their Dec. 7 decision to enter into a sharing agreement with Marcus for the 1988-89 school year.
30 Years Ago – 1993
Shirlee Nelson and Mavis Diment, both of Marcus, have been named as field editors of the “Taste Of Home” magazine.
