130 Years Ago – 1892
Miss Cora Hutchins and Abraham Wirt were united in marriage on November 23. They will make their home on his farm.
Mr. Lichenberger is ready to serve the public with fresh family groceries, temperance drinks, etc. He can be found two doors south of the News.
Mosier, Pimperton and Gurley are buying and picking chickens and have quite an extensive enterprise.
125 Years Ago – 1897
The thermometer registered 13 degrees below Wednesday a.m.
The first jingle of the sleighbells was heard last Sunday.
Mrs. Swindle, nee Maud Briggs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Briggs of Amherst died in childbirth at Silver Creek, Iowa. Her mother was with her at the time of her demise.
115 Years Ago – 1907
The Marcus community is shocked over the death of Mrs. Ned Ames, nee Mary King. She was born at Baden, Germany and came to the U.S.A. at the age of three. She was 26 years old and is survived by her husband and two young children. She had been ill with tonsillitis for about three weeks.
The Marcus High School basketball team is getting into shape and hopes to lick their weight in Wildcats. Last year they played six games and won them all.
110 Years Ago – 1912
Thomas Roberts departed for Freeport and Woodbine, Ill. And expects to be gone for 4 or 5 weeks. .
Miss Lulu Cox and Miss Mary Noe were honored at bridal showers in the home of Miss Sadie Gurley.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Miller, Mr. and Mrs. John Jungers, Mrs. Jennie Hosteler and Helen have postponed their trip to California due to the serious illness of their Neild relatives.
105 Years Ago – 1917
Edna Booth, Ray Schlesser, Dale Pitts, Donald Keys, and Margaret Mitchell will enter the humorous division of the declamatory contest December 7 in the Opera House.
Florence Mae Woodall and Walter Kirchoff were married November 28 in the Methodist parsonage by Rev. G.L. Gilbert.
Mayor Charles Addy resigned as Mayor of Marcus before he departed for California.
Herman Treinen has decided to quit farming and will hold a public sale NW of town December 10.
90 Years Ago – 1932
Santa Claus will arrive in Marcus on December 17 with his sleigh to give the boys and girls candy and rides.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cuthrell are the parents of a daughter born November 27.
Following complaints made by local citizens, all slot machines were taken out last week.
85 Years Ago -1937
Mr. and Mrs. Hans P. Mortensen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary recently at their Plymouth County home.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Geringer are the parents of a son born December 1.
Roller skating was enjoyed over the weekend in the Japanese Gardens.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Brady departed for Los Angeles and other points west on a two month vacation.
80 Years Ago – 1942
David Stanley Klingborg was born November 13 to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Klingborg.
Catherine Butler gave an interesting report on England to her sixth grade class. James McGee gave a report on Denmark.
Conrad Anderson of Chicago spent a few day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Anderson, He plans to enlist in the service soon.
75 Years Ago -1947
Marcus Eagles opened their first basketball game at Remsen St. Mary’s with Connie Dorr and Lloyd Bork as forwards, Dave Nelson, center and Marvin Ebert and Jim Christensen at guards. The Eagles were badly beaten 43-9.
Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten; and Ethel Barrymore star in “The Farmer’s Daughter” which opens at the Lyric for four days.
Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Don are the parents of an 81b, 8oz son, Fred Lyman born Sunday evening. He has a sister and a brother.
Mrs. Ellen Ames returned home last week after spending the past month at Merrill caring for her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Powell and new baby.
Bernard Nelson will hold a closing out public sale of farm machine, cattle, etc goods at the farm 8 1/2 miles south and 2 miles west of Marcus on Wednesday, December 10.
70 Years Ago – 1952
Ray C. Peters, 65, a life-long Marcus resident, passed away December 1 in the Veteran’s Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. He is survived by his wife, one son, one daughter, three brothers, and a sister.
Harry Nelson, naval reserve flyer of Marcus is stranded by dense fog at Nashville, Tenn. He is trying to return to his base at Lincoln, NE.
John Slota will hold a public sale on Thursday, December 11 at the farm 5 3/4 miles south of Marcus.
65 Years Ago – 1957
The annual Marcus Pancake Day, sponsored by the Commercial Club, drew 2,500 eaters who consumed 475 lbs of sausage.
The Cleghorn Lions Club held a coffee and bake sale in the town hall Wednesday, December 4. The Cleghorn firemen will hold a coffee bake sale in the town hall, Tuesday, December 10.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Schreier are the parents of an 8 lb, 71/2 oz son, Daniel Allen, born Tuesday, December 3.
Herb Stowater bowled 223 for the Men’s high game last week.
Kitty Boever, student nurse at St. Vincent Hospital, Sioux City, and Peggy Jean Boever of U.S.D. Vermillion, SD were weekend visitors in the parental Mr. and Mrs. John Boever home.
60 Years Ago – 1962
About twenty-five foreign students, attending nearby colleges, will spend the weekend in Marcus with various host families.
Carol Miller of Marcus, played the flute in the Iowa State Orchestra Festival at Des Moines.
Chester Specht will hold a closing out farm public auction on Monday, December 3, 4 1/2 miles south of Bud’s corner at Cleghorn.
Clarkson’s IGA. Food Market features Butternut coffee, 1 lb can-59¢ -Pork Roast, 39¢ lb – Peanut Brittle Candy, 39¢ lb and a 2lb fruitcake- 99¢.
55 Years Ago – 1967
Mrs. Peter Peterson, 71, nee Alma Soe, passed away after a short i1lness. She is survived by three sons, and two sisters. Alma was a Marcus resident until 1955.
Linnea Jean Nelson, of Marcus and James L. Basey of Greeley, CO, are planning a December 30th wedding. Both are students at Colorado State University.
Capt. and Mrs. Jim Nicholson of West Point Academy, NY visited in the Jack Dunn home during the Thanksgiving holidays. He is a teacher at the academy.
Mrs. Crail’s fourth grade class at Grand Meadow visited the Jim and Natalie Harman farm to see a beaver dam. Margaret Ann Harman is a member of that class.
50 Years Ago – 1972
Ric Collins, a ‘69 graduate of Marcus High School, was honored as the Athlete of the Week at Westmar where he is a senior and co-captain of their cross country team.
Marcus Eagles defeated the Galva Blue Devils 81-44 in their first game of the season. On Friday night, they defeated Granville 61-38.
Susie Nielsen and Mike Snyder were selected to sing in the 1972 All State Festival at Des Moines, November 25.
Barbara Meehan of Marcus and Dennis George of Sioux City are planning a January wedding. Both are employed in the Minneapolis area.
Mrs. Irwin Wittkop will hold a Public Auction of Livestock and machinery on Tuesday, December 5.
45 Years Ago – 1977
The Marcus Community Care Center Committee has engaged Mr. Gene Needles as legal counsel in presenting our pre-licensing application to the State.
Vernon R. Healy, 66, of Marcus, died Saturday, November 26 in his home. He is survived by his wife, two sisters and a brother.
A Thanksgiving Day fire was discovered and quickly extinguished in the old leather shop building at the corner of Main and Pine Streets. The fire was discovered by Sheila Brownmiller.
James Meehan, 69, Marcus life-long resident, died Saturday, December 3 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters.
40 Years Ago –1982
Mrs. Pete Hoyt of Yakima, WA is visiting, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scharff of Cleghorn and attended their 50th wedding anniversary.
Steven Holmes of Marcus has been accepted for enrollment in the Truck and Diesel Mechanics Program at NIT. at Sheldon.
Marcus Community Action Club will hold their annual Pancake and Sausage Supper on Saturday, December 4, in Holy Name Gym.
The Eaglettes roared over Galva-Holstein Piratettes 62-45. The Eagles defeated Galva-Holstein Pirates 48-44.
Meriden-Cleghorn School will hold a Public dance to benefit their Music program on Friday, December 3 from 8 to 11 p.m. Music from the ‘40’s through the ‘80’s will be provided by “Sapphire”. MC band instructor, Bill Acklin, is a member of that band.
35 Years Ago – 1987
Linda Montagne of Sioux City and Pat Bird of Marcus are planning an April 9, 1988 wedding at Sioux City.
Chad Nielsen of Marcus, has been promoted to Cadet Airman in the Air Force R.O.T.C. unit at the University of Iowa.
Jeff and Julie Letsche are the parents of a 9 lb son, named Michael Lee, born November 20. He has a brother Ben at home.
“Wild Side” is the theme chosen for the. Meriden-Cleghorn homecoming next week. King and Queen will be crowned on Wednesday night and a dance will be held after the basketball game Friday night.
30 Years Ago – 1992
Jeff and Roseanne Gross are the parents of a daughter. Jennifer Leigh, November 26. She weighed 7 lbs, 11 oz and has one brother.
Basketball cheerleaders for this season are Jodi Ehrig, Julie Voetberg, Leah Dunn, Heidi Schachterle, and Heather Kuhnes, Erin Carey is Eliot.
